I don't think that the court records actually resolve our Anna problem. The court records for the prosecution suggest to me there is no connection with our John Manis. Abraham Britton and Annis Manis were prosecuted for L&A in 1847. They were stated to be living together for some time. However, the witness lists is interesting. It includes ?? Baily, James/Jane Hennard, James Tucker, Clinton Luster, David Britton, and Michael Baugh (a Ball?). James Tucker, David Britton and Clinton Luster lived in District 16 in 1850, near Peter Maner. There was an Abraham Brittion age 23 living in Wilson County with a Baily in 1850. Interestingly, Peter Maner has a 23 year old girl named Cintha with a 4 year old child living with him in 1850. So, my suspicion is that Annis was the daughter or daughter in law of Peter Maner. So, this may be our earliest indication that the Maners were really Manises, as we know when they changed the spelling ! of their names. The Grand Jury was from all over the county.
