    1. William & Martelia LAWSON
    2. Sam D. Lawson
    3. Martelia was married the first time to William Lawson, the son of Newton and Elinder (Gilbert) Lawson. She was called "Artilla" at times, I guess a sort of nickname. William Lawson and Martelia had five children together. 1. Verdie Lawson who married Tilson Rhoton. 2. Pearl Lawson who married Jack Thomas. 3. Nettie Lawson who married Arthur Cobb. 4. James (Greene) Nathaniel Lawson who married Sarah Elizabeth Lawson, the daughter of Ambrose and Amanda (Murrell) Lawson. 5. Mack Pete Lawson who married Flora Jane Smith. William "UNCLE BILL" Lawson died 8 July, 1905, at Lyon's View Hospital in Knoxville, Knox County, Tennessee. He was buried in Knoxville, Tennessee, after the family had not contacted the hospital. Probably buried about 10 July, 1905. This is the same William Lawson that Harvey G. Murrell mentions in his application for a pension in 1915. He states of his present wife, Martelia, that she was married before to William Lawson and..."he did not know the date of their marriage. He died in a lunitick asylum at Knoxville, Tennessee. He never rendered any military service". Martelia remarried on 21 October, 1908, at Sneedville, Hancock County, Tennessee, to Harvey G. Murrell. They were married by J.C. Curry, M.G. Martelia survived Harvey G. Murrell at his death 25 January, 1924. She then remarried to Big John C. Burton. She is said to be buried at Pumpkin Valley in Hawkins County, Tennessee, on a mountain ridge...She is believed to have died about 1938. "Green Lawson (probably Nathaniel Greene Lawson) appointed guardian of Martelia Lawson, wife of Harvey G. Murrell, Bond $750.00, 31 August, 1921 (M.B. Book 4, 1919-1931, page 191)." The "Big John C. Burton" mentioned above is believed to be the Grandfather of Bert Lawson's wife, Georgia (Williams) Lawson. In a letter from Carolyn Lawson Rhoton of Surgoinsville, Tennessee, she says that the story on Martelia Murrell was, "Martelia was staying with James Nathaniel Greene Lawson and his family. James went to see if she could draw a pension off of her late husband, William Lawson. While he was gone she left. They hunted for her and when they did find her it was two or three months later! She had married Harvey G. Murrell. They had to return the money.
