There were four William Stapleton's in the western Va., eastern Tn area at about the same time and possibly more. Some may be the same, but it is hard to tell. #1 William with 2nd wife Mary lived in Lee Co., Va. He apparently had children from earlier marriage since he gave permission for son Robert to marry prior to his (Wm) marriage to Mary Brown. He also had children with Mary. Green Co., TN has marriage records for #2 William and Hannah Lane. #3 William Stapleton who was married to Elizabeth Sizemore and had Sarah Stapleton. #4 William Stapleton who is mentioned in Oney will in Va. Sullivan Co., TN has tax record for William Stapleton. Hawkins Co., TN has tax records for William Stapleton and William Stepleton. There are also court record and land records for William Stapleton/William Stepleton in Hawkins Co., TN. This isn't even including the William who was the son of Thomas Stapleton who m! oved to Clay Co., KY. I suspect that James and Andrew were the sons of Nancy who was either single or widowed by 1830 census. There is a William in 1830 with wife and daughter but I haven't figured out who he is. He isn't William/Elizabeth/Sarah. There is a North Carolina marriage record for William Stapleton and Nancy Tarrington 1800. They may have moved west. So far I have no evidence that these are the parents of James. There is a James Stapleton in the 1810 census of Montgomery Co., VA over 45 who has males of the right age range for Isaac, James, Andrew, and Thomas. Still, I have found no evidence of a connection to any Virginia Stapleton families to date. Unless sources are sited, I consider it pure speculation or jumping to assumptions.
