I haven't seen any documentation that indicates his name was really David. We do know that he was married in Stokes County, NC, and then moved to VA after 1833 but before 1837. He was listed in Lee County in 1840 as Preston Lawson. Ambrose Lawson's son Preston was living with him in 1850 Scott County, and in Hawkins County District 9 in 1860, just a few houses away from Ambrose who was living with the Thomas family. Since Ambrose Lawson was from Stokes County and had a son named Preston, it seems reasonable to believe that Ambrose Lawson and Preston Lawson married to Smith were related in some way. Ambrose is a very rare name for Lawson, and Banks Lawson named a son Ambrose. So, maybe there is a connection between the two.
