War Patriots Buried in Hancock & Hawkins Cos. Captain Joseph Martin (1740-1808) was a frontier military leader and an early inhabitant and leader of the State of Franklin. In Lord Dunmore's War (1774) he was appointed Captain in the Militia of Pittsylvania Co., VA and served in the same capacity at the beginning of the Revolutionary War; he was later made Lt. Colonel. Many of the men who served with him, like their leader, became early citizens of the new state of Tennessee. This is extracted from The Draper Manuscripts by James R. Johnson and appeared in "Anserchin' " News, Vol. 24, No. 3 p. 103 David Chadwell, Ensign one of my ancestors served with him. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bob Betty Hughes" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]>; <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, December 03, 2007 6:55 PM Subject: [TNHAWKIN] Rev.
