Bob- I was wondering if this (this John WILLIS) wasn't the father, at first glance, of old Larkin WILLIS. I was wrong...Old Larkin WILLIS was the son of a James WILLIS, of Cumberland County, Va. Here is what I know of this James WILLIS. He may well have been a brother to the John WILLIS you speak of. All the information I write below WAS NOT written by me (Sam Lawson, Dec., 29, 2007)... This info. I copied from the bible of Larkin Willis, the same bible that was located in the home of Nat Willis in Rogersville, Tenn. James Willis, father of Larkin married Eliz. Wilson. Eliz. was the daughter of Ben Wilson and Anne Seay. Ben Wilson, born 16 Dec. 1733 at Jamestoen, Va. died Mar. 26, 1814 in Cumberland County, Va. Ben Wilson, son of Willis Wilson, born 1710, died at Williamsburg, Va., in 1740-50. Willis Wilson was son of Samuel Wilson and a Miss Mason. Anne Seay, born 1734 married Mar. 28 1754, died 1814. Anne was the dau. of James Seay that lived on the York river in Va. I have no idea where this bible is now located,at the time I copied the info. it was in the possession of Helen Brown Whittle (she was a member of the DAR through JamesWillis ****************** Will of James Willis (born 1755) - Made 1 Aug. 1795 - Proved Nov., 1796 Chatham Co., Record of Estates, Vol. 2, pg. 98 NC State Archives film # C.022.50001 - 1782-1799 In the name of God Amen I James Willis of the County of Chatham and State of North Carolina, Chatham Co., Record of Estates, Vol. 2, pg. 98 NC State Archives film # C.022.50001 - 1782-1799 In the name of God Amen I, James Willis of the County of Chatham and State of North Carolina, Being in a Low State of Health in body but my memory, sound and intire and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die Do make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows. - First, that all my Just debts, be paid. Elizabeth and William md. Honour in Chatham Co. to the Willises in Orange Co. NC Elisha Cain (found in both William and James' land transactions and William's Will) was in Orange until Chatham was formed in 1771. He then was in Chatham. Willis names in Orange Co. NC in the late 1700's were: Elisha; Augustine; John; Stephen; Peter; Francis; Benjamin; Peter; Edward. Again, the James WILLIS I write of in this email, died in Chatham County, N.C. about 1796.
