    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: WayneandDeborah Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.tennessee.counties.hawkins/2699.1.1.1.1.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Great questions. Unfortunately and as you know, proof in this particular area and time frame is a challenge at best and sometimes impossible due to the lack / destruction of records. In many cases, circumstantial evidence is the only available information thus far. I was not there and don't really know how they met ;^). It may be possible that they were next-door neighbours. They probably lived near each other and / or met through some familiel connection / association much as we still do. We do have some possible clues however. Dauswell, John and Shadrack MONK and Dauswell, John and Shadrack ROGERS lived near each other as listed in the old tax lists - but start with the 1830 Hawkins Co., TN census and work backward. It appears that the Monks lived in the now tri-county area - Hawkins Co. TN and the part of Russell Co., VA that later became Scott & Lee Co.. A blurred border line area and near Dauswell/Dozwell Rogers (Clinch River / Copper Ridge area). See 1830 census. The name Dauswell runs in this Monk line and shows up in OH near other persons from TN of the same area. The NW border area of Hawkins Co. TN (e.g. 1836 Districts 3, 4 and 5), SW Scott Co., VA, and SE Lee Co. (formerly part of Russell Co., Upper District) are all a bit of a blur. The state line is said to have been disputed and re-surveyed and moved. I've also read that sometimes the taxes were collected / reported by the person who had best access to the areas causing some blurring of the lines meaning that VA could have collected on the TN side and vice versa although no proof. I've e-mailed you some information. For some reason it would not allow me to post it (too much info ?). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
