Diane, I know where one small cemetery is located, it is on the north side of Clinch Mountain, It is high up on the mountain, on property my Aunt Polly Smith has, I do know the Medlock, property borders it, someone else has the Medlock land now, when I was growing up a Rachael Medlock, had a country store there. The cemetery is in very bad condition, I will give you directions to it if you want them. Dee In a message dated 6/7/2009 9:38:43 P.M. What I do know from the records that I have is that is that Baxter Minor was the son of Alfred Minor and Chana Fields, and Baxter was the grandson of Zachariah Minor and Aggy Sizemore. Lloyd Minor was the son of James Minor and Amanda Gibson and Lloyd was the grandson of Zachariah Minor and Aggy Sizemore. Zach Goins appears to be the son or Isaiah Goins of Roane County. Zachariah's second wife was Elizabeth Minor, daughter of Zachariah Minor and Aggy Sizemore. Elizabeth Lawson was first married to Stokely Lawson and their daughter was Orlena Lawson. Zachariah Goins' first wife was Sela Minor, another daughter of Zachariah Minor and Aggy Sizemore. They had a daughter named Orlena who married George Goins, the son of Fielder Goins and Ibby Fisher. Fielder was the brother of Zachariah Goins. George was living next door in the census. I don't know the history of the elderly George W. Goins, but he married Susa! n Minor, daughter of Zachariah Minor and Aggy Sizemore. Andrew Jackson Hurd married Emily Dean and was the son of John D. Hurd and Ann Edens. Who is Orlena 24? In 1860 for Hennis Lawson I show Mariah c1847 and Orlena c1851. I recently got some email from a Mr. Anderson in Illinois who said Hennis' daughter, Elizabeth c1826, had daughters named Mariah and Orlena. I am now wondering if these girls belong to Elizabeth and NOT Hennis. Mr. Anderson said Mariah married Richard Calvin Alvis and moved to MO. Orlena married Daniel A. Anderson and moved to IL. He said both these girls belonged to Wilson W. Willis, and there may have been more children. I believe Wilson W. Willis m. Nancy Mitchell in 1848. The 1850 Census has Hennis and his wife with all those young children, including Mariah 3. Do you know if any of the youngsters were grandchildren? I also remember somebody making a mention of Hennis having foster children. In 1870 in the household of Thomas Brown there is Orlena Lawson 19 working as a housekeeper, she might be the one from Hennis' household in 1860. I have a third (or second) Orlena b. 1872, d/o Newton & Ellen Gilbert Lawson. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I don't recall seeing any markers fo Dodson, but I can tell you there are lots of small graveyards unmarked and in a sad state of affairs to say the least. I did find that people from Rogersville and the Historical Society were eager to help. I found a gravesite on the land my ancestor farmed and found his son's grave marker. In the same area, I found two other grave sites. So, what it will probably take is a trek to Hawkins County and a lot of walking up and down some really big ol' hills. By the way, the view of the Holston River from the South Side while sitting high up on a hill is breathtaking at sunset. Good luck and I will keep my eyes open for a Dodson Marker when I return to the area for more searching in the near future. What I would suggest is if you cannot locate your ancestor in any nearby formal burials, try mailing or even going door to door to the private landholders in the area, clearly stating your interests are for genealogical and historical purposes. I had a very lucky discovery this way. I had contacted the decendents of a Civil War ancestor, looking for a photograph of the ancestor. Not only did they share his only known surviving photograph with me, but they were still living on the property that had passed to him from his first wife, my gr-gr-grandmother. Buried out in the far part of their land were my gr-gr-gr-grandparents. The descendents hadn't known who the people were who were buried on their land, but they had taken good care of the grave and maintained it for decades. When I had explained who I was they recognized the names and it all fell into place, that these were the in-laws of their ancestor, who had remarried. Since then they have very kindly allowed desendents access to the grave to take photographs and it has been wonderful getting to know them by mail and email. I'm hoping to make a trip out there one day. To make a long story short, don't give up if you can't find a formal cemetery. There may be a single grave on old homestead land in the places you mention. I think if you approach a landholder polietly and make your interests clear, you might be surprised how many people will be happy to help you. And is no grave can be located, I would suggest laying a wreath in the Holston River and memorialize your ancestor in this way, knowing that the wreath will have drifted by him wherever he is buried along its banks. And I'm sure he would appreciate that you would do this for him. Best wishes, Claire Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am so impressed by the kindness of strangers. My great great grandfather's grave is one of those on private land. The cows were destroying the area and had damaged an very elaborate head stone by knocking it over. A new owner of the property cleaned up the area and put a small fence around it to keep the cows off.. When I went to visit it, the new owner was very glad to know who had owned the property originally and who was buried there. I live clear across the country and only get to the area every 20 years or more--how special that he did that for a stranger! Vinita Shaw in El Paso TX In a message dated 6/4/2009 10:52:19 A.M. If you will contact me privately, I can provide info on Wiley's father, John Garfield Shropshire, his half brother's ( Samuel Garfield Shropshire - my grandfather) and some history of the family. I'm the oldest survivor of the Sam Shropshire line. I located this cemetery in 1952. I have photographed all headstones. You're welcome to copies. Contact me at: v.drewa@verizon.net or vernon@drewa.com The first perferable. The second is tailed off my website, which hasn't been updated since it was originally purchased. Sincerely, Vernon H. My great grandmother was Lelia Augustus Goodman b 1876 d. 17 Nov 1918 in Surgoinsville, Tn. She married James Isaac Wagner. Lelia's parents were John R. Goodman and Amanda Victoria Walker. Any info on this Goodman line would be very helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
