Diane Just a note back then people only let family borrow from them and it was usually a cousin or what we call In Laws today, back then cousin usually meant IN LAW. But again the point being they only lent to family and it was family they were suing and family members that were testifying to the oral agreements as they were present when they were made with a handshake. To everyone on this list Thank You! I read everything you post and love it all. I havent had anything to post to help anyone yet, but thanks to a post sometime ago about the Wills family I might soon. That is a name that I found in a 350+ year old Cooper bible that is currently in my possession. (I call it a Cooper bible because the only thing I know about it was that it was carried by a Cooper cousin during the Civil War. I have no idea which Cooper cousin!). I had almost forgotten about the Wills name being in there until that post. Once I figure out the connection to my Cooper à Click à Harrell à Colvin à Wesley line I will post it. Everyone on this list may not care, but dont count out the lurkers among you! Barbara Harrell Wesley

Raleigh Dodson who died in 1793 or 1794. His son is Lazarus Dodson, also a Rev War vet, who we are setting a stone for in Claiborne County, as soon as the stone comes in. Raleigh's service record is on the same pay list as his son Lazarus which we have submitted to the SAR as documentation for Lazarus stone which is on order. I went back to Hawkins County three weeks ago for a visit and found Raleigh's original land. He is very likely buried there because he owned it when he died. Eventually, his son in-law John Sanders owned it and that land stayed in the Sanders family for generations. We know that old John Sanders, Rev War vet, is buried there in that cemetery. So there are two in the same location. Now, the cemetery is terribly grown up with weeds, but I do think I could get someone to bushhog the approach. I did make contact with the Sanders family while I was there, although they don't own the land now, they did know where it was. The cemetery is in terrible disrepair and needs desperately to be fenced. It's huge, but only 4 or 5 markers are there. It was last used in the 1800s except for the wife of John Sanders Jr who died in 1911 (second younger wife). Anyway, Raleigh Dodson is my ancestor and I'd love to have a veteran's marker set for him. I think the Sanders family would like to have a marker for old John Sanders too, but we're both worried about the cemetery just disappearing with time. I can't join the SAR because I'm a female and I can't found a DAR chapter there because I'm not in the DAR nor do I live there. I'm in Michigan. I do, however, want to honor my ancestor, which is why I went back to find his land and his grave. TNSSAR is finally getting some help from Rogersville. Watch us GO!!!! THE SAR WANTS YOU !!! if one of your direct ancestors fought against the British during the American Revolution, the Nationa Society and the Tennessee Society of the Sons of the American Revolution invites you to join our ranks.. SAR was incorporated Jan 17, 1890 and is a patriotic, historical, and educational organization. Goals include perpetuating the memory of the Revolutionary War, preserving our history, marking locations of the Rev. War events, and burial sites of our Patriots as we recently did for Tom Amis, encouring research, and fostering true patriotism. You must be 18 years of age with iineal descent from an ancestor who supported the war for freedom in most any fashion. Perhaps some member of your family has been a DAR or SAR member in the past. This makes entry into SAR much more simple with a Record Copy of their app. The Tennessee Society is interested in organizing a new chapter in the Hawkins and Hancock County areas. A name that has been suggested is the State of Franklin Chapter. New chapters have recently been chartered in Carter and Claiborne counties. This area contains burial sites for several hundred Patriots. For more information please contact Bob Hughes, Past Pres. TNSSAR, P.O. Box 3008, Jackson, TN 38303 731-935-1948 e-mail address: bandbhughes@webtv.net Additional information on requirements and securin DAR and SAR Record Copy apps will be supplied. If we can generate enough interest, we will hold a local meeting for further information. Hi Bob, You and I have chatted before. Roberta Estes Please note that I have changed my e-mail address to robertajestes@att.net. Tony, I for one enjoy the emails you have been sending to the list. I do not subscribe to "Distant Crossroads" therefore do not have the opportunity to read this information there. Even if I did subscribe to the DC quarterly I can safely say that 95% of the information published is of no interest to me. However, I do genealogy research in Hawkins County on 1 surname (and those families that married into this family) and therefore I am interested in Hawkins County genealogy and history. I do subscribe to the Hawkins County list, again for information that may come through on 1 surname that I research. Sometimes folks send information, such as you are sending Tony, that can be of interest to us and sometimes it has no meaning to us at the time. One never knows when a surname might pop up that we didn't know about in our research. Knowing the information has been posted to this list gives us the opportunity to locate it later. And, again, I must say that 95% of the information that comes through this list isn't of interest to me (at the time). If I have an interest later I know where to find it. It's interesting reading. I just never know when a piece of information will help me with my research. In the meantime, I use my delete key and off I go to the next email. I say keep posting the information because new people sign up on this list on a regular basis. These folks may not have the means or opportunity to join various web sites where a fee is required. Sherry: My ist s done by hand from the SAR and DAR record books. I don't have them all typed online. And of course m list only contains names of Patriots documented by DAR and SAR. There may be that many more. That's what I am looking for in addition to an SAR chapter in Hawkins Co.
