Though some of the old court filings get a little tedious and long, it is overall enjoyable and worth the money.  I thank the nice people who put it together.  It is not an eay task.   I am fortunate in that one of my cousins spent years doing research on our family and it is all bound in a fine looseleaf binder for ready reference.    We have a town named after our ancestors in Hawkins County.  However, I still find tiny items here and there relating to ancestors and related families and I enjoy locating them.    I have also 'met' some great correspondents thru this site which I continue to exchange with on a variety of subjects.   Keep up the good work folks.   Dan Moore, Jr. Lubbock, Texas  --- On Sun, 7/12/09, Kaysb@aol.com <Kaysb@aol.com> wrote: From: Kaysb@aol.com <Kaysb@aol.com> Subject: Re: [TNHAWKIN] From the List Admin regarding subject matter for the list To: tnhawkin@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, July 12, 2009, 12:19 AM I for one find all the information regarding Hawkins County very interesting and read most of the emails people have sent regarding  information, I have found some of my ancestors listed amongst many of the people  of Hawkins County.  On another list I belong to, it came down to a very  small article that helped the brick walls in my family search and one never  knows when a name may be mentioned that will drive a wedge into that  chink.  I also enjoy reading when someone did find a great discovery about  their ancestor, it gives me some hope that maybe someday I may be able to gather  more information Pine, Morris is my main research for Hawkins County.  I found that my great-grandmother's brother John Pine married Nancy Shanks and Shanks are related to the Lawson's of Hawkins County and many other names, if I hadn't read the emails, I wouldn't have seen some of the relations.  My great-grandmother Mary Pine married my great-grandfather George W. Morris who I  found was living with his sister in the 1860 census and were married in December 1860.  I also am finding what great history Hawkins County has and the people  who settled this part of Tennessee and the different counties one needs to look at as well when searching Hawkins County.  Without information provided who  would have known so much about this county, its ties with the revolutionary war,  the civil war, etc..  This is also one of the most active lists I belong to  besides Massachusetts, others I have to see if I am still subscribed so please  continue everyone to provide information and names.  Right now I am  housebound for a few weeks after a heart attack and this is my refuge. Patriots Also another good clue that is over looked is where and who gave information about a patriots service, especially those they served with. Make sure you note who they served under as it was more then likely a Militia from their home area. Note the names and what research has been done on the people giving statements. The Captain the Patriot served under in a Militia is usually found on the same River way as the patriot. Might not be the same County as Creeks, Mountain Tops and Rivers were used as Boundaries for County Lines. The basic means of transportation was by River and most Roads where laid out following a River or Creek path. Boy DID I ever look this one above just recently LOL on the Shropshire Families, some of which came to Hawkins Co. TN. I overlooked a Cousin's service record (William Shropshire) of Joel Shropshire recorder for Hawkins Co Tn until 1803. His Captains William Shropshire served under is what I overlooked. When I started checking this Capt. I was able to place a few more of my direct relatives together serving with this same Capt. Joel Shropshire married Mary Polly Hudson daughter of Hudson Johnson and wife Agness. Hudson Johnson lived on Big Creek his deeds for this lands were in Washington Co. NC when he came there in 1782 with Rev. Thomas Murrell. I still can not figure out the County line changes for Surry Co NC and who was claiming certain creeks. Or was there a Conflict between Counties claiming the same areas as this often happened. Patriots I have proven a number of DAR Patriots that are ancestors of people who came to Hawkins Co. They are not buried in Hawkins Co, but one is probably buried in Hancock Co. Even if the people came to Hawkins Co. later than the Patriots are from VA or NC they can still count. I have scanned my approved papers for these patriots: *Zachariah Blankenbeckler, VA* (ancestor of both the Becklers and Blankens of Hawkins Co.), *Henry Wax, PA, Valentine Boyer, PA, Casper Winck, PA, Samuel Amyx, VA*, (ancestors of all the descendants of Henry Price of Hawkins Co.), *Joseph Cole, VA, Jenkin Williams, Israel Cole, NY, John Marks, VA* (ancestors of the Becklers of Hawkins and Hancock and some of the Coles), and *Daniel Heck, MD, Batt Crowder, VA* (ancestors of many of the Hecks of Hawkins Co., TN), *Richard Green, NC *(ancestor of the Greenes of Hancock, Hawkins, Hamblen, Grainger) *John Cantwell, SC* (ancestors of most of the Cantwells and many Greenes, Seals, Trents of Hancock Co.), *Reuben Weathers, NC, *(ancestor of the James P. Drinnon family of Hancock County). I am willing to send by email copies of my papers to anyone that will send me their exact line to the patriot desired. Having these papers would mean that you would only have to prove your line up to the point it joins with mine. Many people have been able to hook on my papers already to join DAR, and there is probably no reason why it wouldn't help them join SAR. 3. Bob, I know you have been trying to get this chapter off the ground for a long time and I think you would get more of the response you are looking for as to starting your chapter if you could let us in on just who the patriots are that you have found. I for one have a lot of different ancestors from Hawkins Co. and wouldn't know which one to start asking about first. Also if you posted the list of patriots it might help fuel some searches and maybe give some of us a start on whittling down those brick walls. If the task of copying the names seems like it's too much I would like to offer my help and type the names for you. I also believe that if some of us just took maybe 25 names and typed them for you we would have the list done in an instant. If you have a scanner you can send them that way or you could send them by regular mail. Along with you, Shella, Mr. Goins and other's have provided more help than most realize. I've been at this for 60 year's and know that the more information disseminated, the more other's glean. Tony, I'm sure you recall the day's when the Hawkins County Court Records were in complete disarray [I obtained originals of many of my relations in the mid 60's, but it took folks like you and many other's to get this corrected.] I applaud you and the other's doing what you do for aiding other's and preserving a bit of our history. Mine were Murrells, Sims, Daughtery, and Clemons. I know the Clemons were from VA so maybe they all came to Hawkins together??? 1. Re: [TNHAWKIN] DAR & SAR & Hawkins Co. Patriots
    2. Tony Johnson
    3. Also another good clue that is over looked is where and who gave information about a patriots service, especially those they served with. Raleigh Dodson who died in 1793 or 1794. His son is Lazarus Dodson, also a Rev War vet, who we are setting a stone for in Claiborne County, as soon as the stone comes in. Raleigh's service record is on the same pay list as his son Lazarus which we have submitted to the SAR as documentation for Lazarus stone which is on order. I went back to Hawkins County three weeks ago for a visit and found Raleigh's original land. He is very likely buried there because he owned it when he died. Eventually, his son in-law John Sanders owned it and that land stayed in the Sanders family for generations. We know that old John Sanders, Rev War vet, is buried there in that cemetery. So there are two in the same location. Now, the cemetery is terribly grown up with weeds, but I do think I could get someone to bushhog the approach. I did make contact with the Sanders family while I was there, although they don't own the land now, they did know where it was. The cemetery is in terrible disrepair and needs desperately to be fenced. It's huge, but only 4 or 5 markers are there. It was last used in the 1800s except for the wife of John Sanders Jr who died in 1911 (second younger wife). Anyway, Raleigh Dodson is my ancestor and I'd love to have a veteran's marker set for him. I think the Sanders family would like to have a marker for old John Sanders too, but we're both worried about the cemetery just disappearing with time. I can't join the SAR because I'm a female and I can't found a DAR chapter there because I'm not in the DAR nor do I live there. I'm in Michigan. I do, however, want to honor my ancestor, which is why I went back to find his land and his grave. Roberta Estes Please note that I have changed my e-mail address to robertajestes@att.net. 2. Tony Johnson
    3. That is why one needs to identify the Creek, River or Mountain their ancestor settled on, and the neighbors (kinsman) so they can trace deed records of the land marks in ones deeds. Thus establishing a time line to look into what County formed from What County Or even what State formed from What State. one has to remember that Hawkins County formed from Sullivan County, but Virginian and North Carolina claimed these same LANDS. Washington Co Va and Washington CO NC were parent Counties to the lands of what is know NC. Another clue is to make sure you record all deeds that were registered in a 3 day period as that is who traveled with who to get to these lands. Thus establishing a known travel pattern on when you research.
