    3. Hi Karen, I don't show a James Moore married to a Cordia Welch in my file, but I may not have the second wife noted. What was his first wife's name? Do you have a timeframe for his birth/death? Do you know where he lived in Grainger Co.? There were at least two separate Moore families in Grainger. One lived very near the Hawkins line and many are buried in the old County Line Cemetery, currently called the Colwell Cemetery I believe. Others are buried on or near Moore's Chapel Road. This is a different family than established the Mooresburg town. 1. [TNHAWKIN] Millers in King's Mountain Campaign
    2. Jeff
    3. My Millers left Tennessee, but were in Carter County when it was still Washington District. George Miller, and his brothers were the Milers mentioned below. They had a homestead on the slopes of Roan Mtn. Near Crab Orchard, at "Johnson's Forge" at Shelving Rock, on the Little Doe river. A History of Watauga County, North Carolina John Preston Arthur pages 57-59 "Washington County--formerly Washington District-...The Farthing grant is to John Carter for 300 acres in the county of Washington, beginning on two white oaks standing near the path that leads across Stone Mountain to Cove Creek and on the west side of the Beaver Dam Creek. It is dated November 17, 1790, and is numbered 947, and recorded in the office of the Secretary's office, page 234. "For, when the Watauga settlers set up house-keeping on their own hook, they had named the territory they had acquired from the Indians by lease and purchase Washington District, and in 1777, before they tried to secede, calling the new State Franklin, North Carolina converted Washington District into Washington County. (Laws 1777, ch. 126.) Dr. Draper continues: "Thence from Talbot's Mill to its head, where they bore somewhat to the left, crossing Little Doe River, reaching the noted 'Resting Place,' at the Shelving Rock, about a mile beyond the Crab Orchard, where, after a march of about twenty miles that day, they took up their camp for the night. Big [sic, it was "Little Doe River"] Doe River, a bold and limpid mountain stream, flowing hard by, afforded the campers, their horses and beef cattle abundance of pure and refreshing water. Here a man of the name of Miller resided who shod several of the horses of the party." Even Homer and Dr. Draper Sometimes Nod.-- Notwithstanding all the pains Dr. Draper took to get the facts for his excellent "Kings Mountain and its Heroes," his failure to visit the actual scenes along the route of the King's Mountain men is responsible for the error in the statement that the Big Doe River, flowing hard by, afforded the campers, etc., abundance of pure and refreshing water." The nearest point from the Shelving Rock to the Big Doe River is at least one mile and a half where that stream flows through the Crab Orchard, and route to it is over a rather high ridge and by a rough trail. But the Little Doe, with enough pure and refreshing water for all the men and stock then in what is now Tennessee, flows within one hundred yards of the Shelving Rock, on which there has been placed a bronze tablet about two feet square with the following inscription: First Night's Encampment of KING'S MOUNTAIN MEN SEPTEMBER 26, 1780. __________ They Trusted in God and kept Their Powder Dry. __________ Placed by John Sevier Chapter, D. A. R., 1910. A Busy Forge.-- But he was right in stating that a man of the name of Miller resided at the Shelving Rock and shod their horses, for Squire W. H. Ollis, of Ingalls, N. C., furnished this identical information to the Historical Society of New Jersey in 1872, saying that "Absalom Miller told me that his father lived at Shelving Rock in September, 1780, and shod the horses of some of the King's Mountain men while they camped under the Shelving Rock." As most of Sevier's men were practical blacksmiths, we may well imagine that Johnson's forge was a busy place early on the morning of September 27, 1780, and well up into that day, and that, while some were shoeing the horses, others were busy at bellows and anvil, hammering out horse shoes and nails, thus leaving none of the available tools idle for a moment." The Millers were some of the first settlers in the Crab Orchard, Near the Shelving Rock, founded by Daniel Boone, and Michael Stoner (Holsteiner) in 1767. They had migrated with the Boone Family from Pennsylvania. The settlers were later involved in the Battle of Point Pleasant as "Long Hunters." Long Hunters were frontiersmen, who would take long solo hunting trips into the wilderness, often at risk of being killed by the Indians. ~~ The Miller Family was John Miller who married Mary Keene and their children. I for one have a lot of different ancestors from Hawkins Co. and wouldn't know which one to start asking about first. Also if you posted the list of patriots it might help fuel some searches and maybe give some of us a start on whittling down those brick walls. If the task of copying the names seems like it's too much I would like to offer my help and type the names for you. I also believe that if some of us just took maybe 25 names and typed them for you we would have the list done in an instant. If you have a scanner you can send them that way or you could send them by regular mail. Patriots Also another good clue that is over looked is where and who gave information about a patriots service, especially those they served with. Make sure you note who they served under as it was more then likely a Militia from their home area. Note the names and what research has been done on the people giving statements. The Captain the Patriot served under in a Militia is usually found on the same River way as the patriot. Might not be the same County as Creeks, Mountain Tops and Rivers were used as Boundaries for County Lines. The basic means of transportation was by River and most Roads where laid out following a River or Creek path. Boy DID I ever look this one above just recently LOL on the Shropshire Families, some of which came to Hawkins Co. TN. I overlooked a Cousin's service record (William Shropshire) of Joel Shropshire recorder for Hawkins Co Tn until 1803. His Captains William Shropshire served under is what I overlooked. When I started checking this Capt. I was able to place a few more of my direct relatives together serving with this same Capt. Joel Shropshire married Mary Polly Hudson daughter of Hudson Johnson and wife Agness. Hudson Johnson lived on Big Creek his deeds for this lands were in Washington Co. NC when he came there in 1782 with Rev. Thomas Murrell. I still can not figure out the County line changes for Surry Co NC and who was claiming certain creeks. Or was there a Conflict between Counties claiming the same areas as this often happened. Even if the people came to Hawkins Co. later than the Patriots are from VA or NC they can still count. I have scanned my approved papers for these patriots: *Zachariah Blankenbeckler, VA* (ancestor of both the Becklers and Blankens of Hawkins Co.), *Henry Wax, PA, Valentine Boyer, PA, Casper Winck, PA, Samuel Amyx, VA*, (ancestors of all the descendants of Henry Price of Hawkins Co.), *Joseph Cole, VA, Jenkin Williams, Israel Cole, NY, John Marks, VA* (ancestors of the Becklers of Hawkins and Hancock and some of the Coles), and *Daniel Heck, MD, Batt Crowder, VA* (ancestors of many of the Hecks of Hawkins Co., TN), *Richard Green, NC *(ancestor of the Greenes of Hancock, Hawkins, Hamblen, Grainger) *John Cantwell, SC* (ancestors of most of the Cantwells and many Greenes, Seals, Trents of Hancock Co.), *Reuben Weathers, NC, *(ancestor of the James P. Having these papers would mean that you would only have to prove your line up to the point it joins with mine. Tony, I'm sure you recall the day's when the Hawkins County Court Records were in complete disarray [I obtained originals of many of my relations in the mid 60's, but it took folks like you and many other's to get this corrected.] I applaud you and the other's doing what you do for aiding other's and preserving a bit of our history. I join Dan Moore and other's who thank you, for what you've doing and have done. Hang in there and keep up the good work. Best wishes, Vernon Drewa, Cdr. I get 'Distant Crossroads' and enjoy it. Though some of the old court filings get a little tedious and long, it is overall enjoyable and worth the money. I thank the nice people who put it together. It is not an eay task. I am fortunate in that one of my cousins spent years doing research on our family and it is all bound in a fine looseleaf binder for ready reference. We have a town named after our ancestors in Hawkins County. However, I still find tiny items here and there relating to ancestors and related families and I enjoy locating them. I have also 'met' some great correspondents thru this site which I continue to exchange with on a variety of subjects. Keep up the good work folks. On another list I belong to, it came down to a very small article that helped the brick walls in my family search and one never knows when a name may be mentioned that will drive a wedge into that chink. I also enjoy reading when someone did find a great discovery about their ancestor, it gives me some hope that maybe someday I may be able to gather more information Pine, Morris is my main research for Hawkins County. I found that my great-grandmother's brother John Pine married Nancy Shanks and Shanks are related to the Lawson's of Hawkins County and many other names, if I hadn't read the emails, I wouldn't have seen some of the relations. My great-grandmother Mary Pine married my great-grandfather George W. Morris who I found was living with his sister in the 1860 census and were married in December 1860. I also am finding what great history Hawkins County has and the people who settled this part of Tennessee and the different counties one needs to look at as well when searching Hawkins County. Without information provided who would have known so much about this county, its ties with the revolutionary war, the civil war, etc.. This is also one of the most active lists I belong to besides Massachusetts, others I have to see if I am still subscribed so please continue everyone to provide information and names. Right now I am housebound for a few weeks after a heart attack and this is my refuge.
