Given the "affection" that Anna's father had for Anderson Lawson, it seems unlikely that he would sue Anderson. It also seems to confirm that Anderson Lawson was the son or nephew of Thomas Lawson Sr. I believe that Clement Lawson testified in the divorce proceedings. David

This may get me into trouble, but it appears that: 1. John Alfred Murrell, suspected of being the child of Nancy Williams/Lawson/Murrell and Christian Pearson was the half brother of Lucinda Murrell who married William Trent/Burton and was suspected of being the child of Nancy Williams/Lawson Murrell and James Murrell Sr. 2. James Burton Trent was the brother of Samuel Trent/Burton, who with Rebecca was the suspected father of William Trent/Burton. 3. Francis W. Burton was the son of Samuel Trent/Burton and Rebecca. 4. Thomas Burton aka Squire was probably the son of Samuel Trent/Burton or James Burton Trent. 5. Margaret Winstead was the daughter of William Martin and Lucy Burton and wife of Ephraim Winstead, which likely means that Lucy Burton was related to Samuel Trent/Burton and James Burton Trent. James Murrell Sr was the illegitimate son of William Martin and the Murrells were thus relatives of Margaret Winstead. 6. So, this likely means that all of the 1850 Burtons, and Trents who became Burtons in 1860 were probably closely related. David

This appears to be more backlash from the John Cantrell - Anna Johnson Cantrell divorce. Anna immedietly married Anderson Lawson.

Cope vs. William Burton Hawkins Co. Circuit Court 1866 John W. Cope was connected with a William Trent and William "Bill " Burton allegedly owed him money. Burton is accused of somehow avoiding payment. Information in the file: 1. J.A. Murrell testified that William Burton was married to his half-sister. 2. James Trent testified that William Burton was his nephew. 3. Francis W. Burton, deceased, was William Burton's brother. 4. Thomas E. Burton was mentioned and identified as "Squire " Burton. 5. Thomas E. "Squire" Burton had a son named John Burton. 6. Margaret Winstead tesified. 7. James Willis testified he went to school with William Burton and was very familiar with his handwriting. There was much more, I just skimmed over the testimony and remember the above.
Hi - Tagging into to this conversation - is anyone aware of a marriage between a Johnson woman and Richard Medlock/Matlock? They named a son Johnson Medlock/Matlock and Richard's wife is currently unknown. She died abt. 1800 and they were married abt. 1774 most likely in Burke or Granville County, NC. By 1805, this lady had died and Richard was settled in Hawkins with wife #2 Mary Weddle/Weddle. I have documentation here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/1matlock.html Thanks for any leads! One I know was a grandson of Thomas and the son of Stephen. Stephen had 3 sons that I know of, Abner, Thomas and Anderson. This Abner married Charlott Lawson. It is said in Abners pension application that Charlott died in Rogersville, Webster County MO in 1891. Abner died in 1909 in the Soldiers HOme in Lafayette, Indiana and is buried there. They are the same family that was in Fayette County in 1870. We suspect they came to Indiana with the Alfred Bolen family as we have found information that says Alfreds wife, Keziah Johnson and Abner were half brother and sister. We still haven't been able to sort that out. I hope between us we can sort all of this out. I have not been able to find out where Stephen died. I just know that the 3 boys all said they were born in Indiana and Abner said he was born in Clay County Indiana. He was born in 1833. I did find a Stephen Johnson in Hamilton county in 1840 but have searched records for that county with no success. I do hope to go to Clay County if spring ever gets here.Maybe I will have some luck there.

Thomas Johnson left Stephen's children a share of land in his will. Stephen's widow Malinda was living in 1850 District 3, and the youngest child was 13. There is no Stephen or Malinda of appropriate age indexed in 1840. There was an older Stephen Johnson, but he was not the same one as Thomas' son. My guess is that Malinda was living with someone (parents?) in 1840 near the Jesse Manis and Thomas Lawson families.
