    1. SEEKING: JOHNSON
    2. Dear List, Does anybody out there connect with my JOHNSON family? I have many years of research, but cannot seem to connect the dots from my ancestor, John Johnson to the next generation back. My GG GF wasJohn JOHNSON (1780-90 prob.VA/NC/TN-1854 MO) and his only proven sibling was William JOHNSON (1774-77 prob.VA/NC/TN-15 Jan 1815 Battle of New Orleans. I have a manuscript, written prior to 1923, that states the father of these men was a Rev War Vet from VA. After the war he migrated to E TN (where?). By 1820 this Johnson man, and "some of his boys" migrated to NE AL. I have documentated John Johnson in NE AL in 1832 land records. Also, in documentation from a descendant of William JOHNSON (of 1774-77) it states that the father of William and my John JOHNSON either owned or worked at an iron foundry in E TN that was built in 1784 and destroyed "by the Tipton gang" in 1790. The lady that wrote this documentation is now deceased. However, she told me she remembered two pieces of ironware that had been made in that early foundry in E-TN. These two pieces had been in her family since she was a little girl (late 1800's). In this same documentation, there is a segment that states some of these JOHNSONS are buried in Hawkins County. The wife of William JOHNSON (MAY) have been a BEAN. Her given name was Sarah, and she was b. ! 1781. Also, John JOHNSON'S second wife was Loveth Louisa (Lovie) PULLEN. She was b. 1802 and dau. of William PULLEN (will on file DeKalb Co. AL, 1841). By the 1840's the JOHNSON bunch had decided to move on to MO. I believe this was due to land warrants. Most of the family of John & William then migrated to Texas, Phelps & Dent Co. in MO. I believe John & William had additional siblings. I think they probably each went a different way when they left TN or NE AL. Therefore, I have never been able to determine just who they might be. Common male names in this line are John, William, Thomas, Aaron and to a lesser degree, Henry and Isaac. Nothing uncommon to work with here. I have extensive records on the families of John JOHNSON (who was married twice) and his brother, William JOHNSON. I am ALWAYS WILLING to exc info and data to benefit each researcher. Many thanks, Judy in TX

The only thing I know about Rebecca's parents is from her death record which says her Father's name was George. It also lists Mother as unknown. But I found a George Grubb in 1860 in Hawkins County TN census with wife, Elizabeth, and daughters, Martha, Rebecca, Sarah and Matilda. I have not yet found any of them in 1870. I see where your Martha married in 1870. Did she stay in the Hawkins and Greene County area or did they move away? Would like to claim this Rebecca as mine. I have Rebecca's birth date as June 1, 1848. Re: Martha E. Grubbs Author: David L. McLain Date: 25 Jan 2005 1:35 AM GMT Classification: Query I believe them to be the same. I had my Martha born in 1847, and married May 15, 1870. Martha's middle name was probably Elizabeth, named for her mother. How old was George Grubb in 1860, and the other daughters Sarah, and Matilda? I'm not sure if they stayed in the same area, but I believe they may have left since none of my older relatives ever heard much about them. I'm persuing this farther, and will keep you advised. My G. Grandfather and child of Martha was M. Edward Richards, born in 1873. He married Alice E. Bussell, daughter of William Rufus Bussell, and Julia Ann Babb. I think we are cousins.

Personally, I can only prove to Russell. Now if we could prove that Russell was really William Russell and then we have that document saying he was Peter's son we'd still only prove the line to Peter. If there was a line that could prove ancestry to Thomas I know I'd be willing to chip in a few bucks to the Lawson DNA study to help defray some of the costs for a volunteer to be tested. I'm thinking of eventually upgrading my test to a 37 marker test, although I was waiting until there were more participants who matched mine and Jack's test who is a descendant of Emanuel (he has the 37 marker test).

Surnames: Lawson Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3198.1.1.1.1.1.1.2 Message Board Post: This emphasizes the importance of the Lawson DNA study. We know from that study that Russell Lawson and John Lawson were likely from the same line. But, one of the two--I don't remember which one--doesn't have the 25 or 37 marker test, so we can't be sure of how closely they were related. To give you an example of what I mean, my real male line is Williams. I had a perfect match on the 12 marker test, but the 25 marker test had two mutations which suggests that we were not closer than an ancestor 300 years in the past. Another problem with John Lawson is that we don't know who he really was. I think that the connection to Emanuel Lawson is a good model to use right now, but truthfully there isn't any real documentation to support it. We need "proven" descendents of Thomas Lawson to confirm Russell's relationship to him--proven in the sense that the ancestor was living with his father in 1850 or there is a document that states who his father was. Once we have that,! we can say for sure who John and Russell belonged to.

It seems that many of this family used names interchangeably - he was James in 1850 and J. C. in 1860. Thanks, that is one more name to add. I remember reading that there is an Irish tradition (?) that the given name was used for all legal matters and the middle name was used by family and friends. Also in many of the early families, four names were used as was Brittish tradition. Add nicknames to that and well no wonder genealogy can be confusing.

I have been looking for this Marvel for several years. I am trying to determine if she is the daughter of Marvel and Letitia Smith White. Both of these people were born in Virginia. Marvel (the father) is not listed in the 1880 Census. As a matter of fact the whole family disappears after 1850 and the mother reappears in the 1880 Census in Hawkins County.
