They lived in Hancock County in 1850, Hawkins County District 2 in 1860, and some children lived in District 3 in 1870 (Ezekiel for example). Jack is likely to be John Sr or John Jr. John Sr would have been 68 in 1880 and John Jr would have been 40. The 1880 census age is unreadable. Naomi was Namoi Alvis who was a spinster in 1860. I don't know if Leanna was her natural daughter or not. Naomi had a bunch of kids living with her in 1860 as well. From the names of the some of children and her age, she appears to be the 1850 wife of John Alvis.

    1. Re: Capt. Thomas Lee
    2. Hugh - As far as I know there is no grave marker for Capt. Thomas Lee. I was sent a photograph of what appears to be a recently erected DAR type marker bearing those dates. His death date is confirmed in primary court records regarding his nun cupative will. The traditional birthdate of 1729 seems to have derived from the highly questionable Needham Lee Bible along with the statement that he was born at Ditchley. I am sure you are aware of this Bible, it being the one that Mims Lee examined in the 1930s and took a photostat back to Virginia from Shelby Co AL (can be downloaded from VSL site). There are also photocopies of this Bible in ETHS and TN State Archives. This Bible is the one Mrs. Boyle would not allow Will Franke to examine. Franke later acquired it from her estate and it is now missing. Handwriting analysis is badly needed to authenticate or disprove this record. The family representative Linda Shabo) also told me of a newspaper article printed in the 1880s about a family reunion of the Needham Lee descendants mentioning their relationship to the Lee family of Virginia and to Zachary Taylor. I did find a statement made in the Goodspeed 1886 bio of Judge Samuel J. Kirkpatrick of Washington Co TN mentioning his ggfr was Capt. John Lee but no name for ggmr. His gggfr was actually Capt. Thomas Lee. Says ggfr was near relative to Lighthorse Harry Lee (R. E. Lee's father). (Samuel Kirkpatrick b. 1841 was grandson of Susan (Lee) Chesnutt, daughter of Thomas Lee Jr., and granddaughter of Capt. Thomas Lee --pf) For what they are worth these are the earliest statements I can find regarding Capt. Thomas Lee's ancestry. A number of primary documents prove his and his last wife's previous residence in Johnston Co NC. Since I have not done any original research in Johnston Co I do not know if his relationship with John Lee Esq. is fairly well proved or not. Pat

    1. Bowlen family 1830 and 1840
    2. Does anyone know about Levi Bowlen, found in 1830 and 1840 census? I believe him to be my ggg grandmother's (Nancy Bowlen Vaughan) Father. In 1830 Wilson Vaughan is shown with Nancy and family. By 1840 Wilson is either dead or has left his family. In 1840, Thomas Rains has moved between Levi and Nancy leading me to believe that Thomas may have married another dauther of Levi's? James Bowlen is living on the other side of Levi. Probably a son. Another name that caught my eye is Henry Province. Sure would like information about Henry also. My ggg grandfather said his grandmother was Mary Province. Any help will be appreciated. Thank you. 1. Captain Thomas LEE of Hawkins Co., T
    2. All, I am informed that the grave marker for Captain Thomas LEE (RS-NC) in Hawkins Co., TN reads 29 Dec 1729-2 Jul 1816. It doesn't say where birth occurred. Assuming that this marker exists and is legitimate, it is the basis for all the later citing of this birth date and it opens the door to a discussion of Thomas LEE. Is he the son of John LEE, Esq. of Johnston Co., NC, as often suggested, or not? John's son, Thomas, is estimated to be born 1835. I agree that Thomas, the son of John, Esq., went to Hawkins Co., TN and settled there and that Captain Thomas LEE (RS-NC) also settled in Hawkins Co., TN. My challenge is to determine if they are one and the same or two different people. I have read of others accounts which state that they are one; it holds true as long as there weren't two Thomas LEEs in Hawkins Co., TN at the same time. Will Franke, a noted researcher of these LEEs, addressed this aspect, but I'm not sure what he considered. He did conclude that the Thomas of John, Esq. was the same as Capt. Thomas LEE of Hawkins Co., TN. First, I need a confirmation of the dates on the grave marker in Hawkins Co., TN of Captain Thomas LEE. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MARTIN/LAWSON/SHELTON/HICKMAN Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3251 Message Board Post: Looking for info on Isaac MARTIN and son James MARTIN. Isaac may have been in Hamblen, TN in 1800, he is not shown in the 1800 Burke, NC Census. His son James is shown in the 1800 Burke, NC and 1810 Burke, NC Census. Then both Isaac and James went to Tennessee, probably Hamblen County. Also looking for William LAWSON and son William LAWSON, who are shown in the 1810 Burke, NC Census living near Isaac and James MARTIN. It is believed that these LAWSONS also went to Tennessee with the MARTINS. There was a brief mention of an Isaac MARTIN in Goodspeed's History of TN as living near the town of Read in what was then Hamblen County, TN. Hamblen was divided up and parts went to Jefferson, Grainger and Hawkins Counties, TN. I think these are the most likely place to look for Isaac and James MARTIN and William LAWSON and son William LAWSON, because I think they all went to Tennessee with some of the SHELTONS, not to mention Benjamin HAWKINS and Washington DODSON who also were names in Hawkins, TN and surrounds. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you - Mim
