Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3336 Message Board Post: Has anyone done any Willis family research? I am most interested in James A. Willis who is my great, great grandfather. I know that he married Birdie Pearson in 1889 and that he was possibly Cherokee, but other than that, I am having difficulty finding information about him. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Could other Miner / Minors be using the similar Manis name to obscure their ancestry maybe ? Or do you think that they are all related (Manis > Miner) ? I believe at one point you said that in a pension file Manners (so some such name) had been found as an aka for one Manis man.

It is on the left side if you are traveling from Kingsport. I think the land is owned by Jason Barton and he lives in the house in front of it. It is before the remodeled Barton house on the right side of the road. I am looking for the grave of my great great grandmother Ella Virginia Etta Barton. The information I have is that she was born in 1862 in Virginia and died in 1880 shortly after my great grandfather was born. She was married to William Bass. Thanks for any help!!

My take on the many spellings is that the name was spelled as the census taker, court clerk, etc. "heard" it. Plus I've found a number of census entries where the final syllable was spelled differently. Ones that first come to mind are Saray for Sarah and Hanner for Hannah. My maiden name is Brandon but in researching that line in TN I've found it spelled Brannon, Branum, and Brandon!

Other spelling are from JP's who could not always spell. Matthew Manis is married to Tabitha Jewel daughter of Joseph Jewel. I believe him to be a son of Peter Manis/ Maners. Jacob Manis's sons named in his will are Ephraim, Elisha, Daniel, Daniel Manis later lived in Greene Co. Tn. Ephraim and Elisha both moved to Jefferson Co. Mo. before the 1850 census. Then there is Bartley and Peter Manis in the same area. Maybe later I will find all of children of each as we get into other records. PC

In 1830, he was listed as Peter Manas and lived near Timothy Dalton (Sr) who was about the same age as James Dalton, as well as James Dalton. There were lots of younger Dalton as well as an Elisha Manas who I guess could be another son.

Did you find this record in TN and then trace them to Lawrence Co? I'm descended from Henry Horn - who stated on a marriage license application in 1857 (Tazewell Co VA) that he was the son of Frederick & Katherine Horn. I know Louise Perkins put him in the same family as Michael, but I've never been convinced he belongs there - sure wish I thought for sure he was - there's a bunch of other children there that we would be akin to! I believe our Henry was in what is now Wayne Co WV on the 1840 census and migrated to Tazewell County by 1850 with a wife and three children, who may or may not have been the children of the wife who was with him there. (She disappears sometime before 1857, when he married again as a widower; however, we have been unable to discover a death or burial record for her.) I believe you and I may have corresponded before some time ago - you may have found additional information that would be so wonderful for me to have - please let me know! Thanks! June
