My grandmother's middle name was Kathryn. She was named after an aunt or grandparent, but I didn't know who. She did have a brother killed in a mining accident in W. Va., His name was Clarence (I think) I'll double check with Dad. She actually went to W.VA. with him to help take care of him, then she met my grandfather Venoy there and married. The part about Goshen Valley is especially interesting because we were told that Mamaws "Real" father was a King....from Goshen Valley. I'd like to investagate that. I'm coming to Church Hill tommorow for a couple weeks visit. If you have a chance give me a call sometime and we will talk about it. Mom's number is 423-357-5156 (I'm assuming your local there?) I'm in Frankin...just below Nashville, My home number is 615-595-1556. Talk to you soon. Pam

I think you knew my grandmother, Mildred Moore, and my great grandmother, Pearl Mullins (Alice's sister). I knew your grandmother and Aunts. I spoke with both Gig and Aunt Sue before they passed but could not get much from there memories. I was also told that Alice's fathers last name was King but she would not have anything to do with him. I have heard stories that Alice found someone dead under a tree. Have you heard the same story? I was not sure if it was her real father or Rufus. I am not sure why Leanna used the Crawford name. In a book on cemeteries in Goshen Valley, I found a listing at Dunkard Church / Bowser Cementary that said: Kathern Jane Crawford Barrett, wife of John Barrett. Born August 8, 1856 died August 24, 1943. Daughter of Bill Crawford and Amarady Mowell With the help of Aunt Sue, I found Dunkard Church/Bowser Cementary. It is on a hill in Goshen Valley (I think it might be on the Sullivan County side). Kathern Jane Crawford Barrett is buried there. Also buried Henry Barrett born 1891 - died 1950 and Amarady Crawford born 1884 and died 1968. I think Henry was Leanna's brother. I think Amarady was Kathern's daughter and possible was named after Kathern's mother, Amarady Mowell. I unfortunately have no proof. I found a 1860 Census Record on a William and Amanda Crawford. One of their children was a Kate J but her age was 2. I have not dismissed this census report because I know for a fact, many of the Flanagan children did not know exactly when they were born and sometimes only had the census report to tell them. My gr grandmother, Pearl had to contact the census bureau when she retired from the Eastman. When she received the report, she realized she was younger than she thought. Just a thought, Please let me know if you have anything different. I also think Alice had another brother - James Crawford. He died after being involved in a mining accident. Hew was married and had one daughter. His wife was pregnant at the time witht the second. I think your grandmother was the only person who kept in touch with them.

I have wonder over the years about why the house was tore down and now I know. Please send me any pictures you have of Rufus, Susan or the house. I have only seen one and it hung in the living room of my great uncle. I am not sure what happen to the picture now. As far as I know, Rufus father is unknown. Mary married William T. Burchfield when she was in her 40's and he was in his early 20's. Because of his age, he could not be Rufus's father. I read in a history book about Church Hill, that Rufus was known for his large grandfather clock that stood in the hallway of the pink house. Do you know anything about this clock? The book had a picture of the house in it. Do you have any idea where Mary's father was from or is buried? Please let me know. Thanks, Melissa

McAmis (decendent of Thomas McCamish). The book is all about the marriages involving decendents of all three of the original brothers. It was complied from information that people like you and I contributed to Edward. It is titled "Marriage Records of the Sept Mac Hamish 1100-1980" It was printed by Gateway Press, Inc, Baltimore 1992. We got our copy directly from Edward. Unfortunately he died several years ago. It shows Theodosia Manis, d/o of James Harvey Manis B/C 1840 & d.. Feb. 1917 & Sarah Randolph b. 11/18/1843 d. 5/22/1911. James Harvey s/o Ephriam Manis b/c 1825 & Anna Lovelace B/C 1825. Sarah was d/o Tommie Randolph b/c 1825 & Mattie Evans B/C 1825. Mattie d/o Joe Evans b/c 1800. Ephraim Manis s/o Wm. "Bill" Manis b/c 1800 & Elizabeth Lacy b/c 1800. Anna was d/oGeorge Lovelace b/c 1800 & Kate Brown b/c 1800. Since it does not indicate who supplied Edward with the information I have not been able to verify it. Hope this helps. Thanks for the info on the children of Ephraim. Ruth

M. and Ann Minns so you are correct in assuming his middle initial was M. In the 1840, 1850, 1860, and 1870 census, Ephraim and Anna are in the McMinn Co. census. In the 1880 census, he is still in McMinn Co. in the home of James and Sarah Manis. Anna has supposedly died by that time. Depending on the census, Ephraim's name is spelled many different ways. Francis Asbury Manis was not Ephraim's son; he was a son-in-law, but I don't know the parents of Francis. Francis married Matilda Jane Manis. Jane is listed in Ephraim's family in the 1850 census. The children of Ephraim and Anna Lovelace Manis: Sarah Ann, John, William R., Matilda Jane, George Smith, James Harvey. Easter, and Joseph F. By the way, George Smih was my gggrandfather. Another interesting thing about this family, if you don't know already, is that John, George Smith, and James Harvey married sisters - Lucinda, Nancy Caroline, and Sarah, respe! ctively. I hope this information is helpful. Now, can you give me some help. Where did you get the information that Ephraim's parents were William and Elizabeth Lacy Manis? I had not been able to find any information on his parents. If I can be of any further help, let me know.
