I received permission to post these ideas on family pictures. Jane Foley Jane; What a perfect poem. When my Mother died, I found about 200 negatives of pictures taken 1920's to 1950's. Had to find a photo studio that had the equipment to develop these large negatives, some were 2 x 2 inches. I made several booklet form copies and mailed out to any living relatives, they would write the name, date etc. that they knew, mailed it back to me, then I would let everyone know as many names as we all could figure out. What a job!! Took months and money. Sharon Wallis Klassen AMEN to that, Jane Foley! I have 'inherited' all my great-aunts papers, including pictures of our family members that I'd never seen before. No names on anything! Anne How fortunate for you to have 'inherited' all this wonderful information and pictures. A suggestion I would like to make is to take these pictures to a Family Reunion (even if you have to organize one yourself), spread them out on a table and have everyone look and try to help you identify the family members. Of course, this may not help unless you have some of the "older" generation present but you won't know unless you try it. Invite people from the community where the family grew up. Make sure you get the word out about the "get-together" and ask anyone to come that is interested in that family or knows anything about the family. I wish you luck! Margie Thanks for this Jane; I have been for some time trying to identify as many as I can from my grandmothers old photo album (1875-1967) and my wife's mothers box of old pictures (1902-1993) I have been unable to find anyone still living who can identify more than 10% of the people. I know some of those who "old folks" in the more recent photos have got to be some of the "youngins" in the older photos. My wife and I have started going through all our old photos and putting name, places, and dates as best we can. I am also scanning them all and putting the info on each one on the CD. We are now 72 & 70 years old and have a lot of pictures going back to our junior high school (or I guess they call it "middle school" today) Thanks again Bob in Victoria, TX
Cindy, that's a great idea. I must get busy and try to list the desendants my old photos. My children probably wouldn,t know who many of them are. Thank you Lois
I just recently went through a suitcase full of pictures my grandmother had. Somehow I got elected to figure out who the people were and try and return the pictures to as many as I could find. Some were easy, cousins, etc. but some were people who died many years ago and left no family. While going through them I came across a memorium from a funeral or two and lo and behold some kind person had taken the trouble to list full names of the deceased's children and their spouses. Without these I might never have uncovered who these people were or how they fit in the family. So, in addition to writing a full history on the back of all our pictures we also need to think about giving a thorough accounting for all descendants of the deceased. LOL.

In checking the 1880 census, I believe Hugh Kyle's father was Arthur Davis, Jr.
This is sooo true, we have a big box of OLD pictures from my husbands family, and on the back they say "my aunt," "my cousin," and so on, and we don't know who wrote on them. If they were alive a body would almost want to strangle them. He own land in the area called Blair's Gap of Hawkins County. This land was close to the Greene Co. TN. line. There is a lawsuit over this land with one James Jones. In putting the pieces of this suit together, I have learned that Andrew Reed, move his family back to Mecklenburg Co. Va. James Jones show the court reciepts where he had traveled to Mecklenburg Co. for depositions. This may give you clue and there it may not. Gives you a place to look. Thank you for your time.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/2847.1 Message Board Post: Marjorie, what I believe you have "stumbled" onto in this cemetery are members of the Hezekiah Davis, Jr. family (he was married to Catherine Stipes). I'm still trying to untangle several of the Davises in Hawkins County, and they do present a mess, since the census records are not very accurate, and Arch Heck's book about the Hezekiah Davis family helps in some respects and gives bad information in others. It doesn't help that they were also very prolific families. Hezekiah, Jr. was the son of Hezekiah Davis and Amelia Johnson. According to Heck, he was born 17 March 1799 at Lee Valley in Hawkins Co. He married ca. 1821 to Catherine Stipes (b. ca. 1805, VA) and died in March, 1868 (Catherine died bef. June, 1860). Hezekiah was very much alive in 1860, living in the Marble Hall community, according to the census. They had these children: Arthur, b. ca. 1823 Lucinda, b. 2 March 1824 m. Robert G. Hamblen Pleasant J., b. 9 Sept. 1826 m. Julia Ann Pangle Catherine, b. ca. 1829 m. Thomas Davis Hezekiah, b. ca. 1832 Harvey, b. ca. 1834 George Jefferson, b. ca. 1840 Arthur is supposed to have married Elizabeth H. Davis, his cousin. I have their children as: Mary A., b. ca. 1858 Arthur, Jr., b. ca. 1859 Sarah Ann Martha J. Now, the issue here might be that Heck is completely mistaken when he gives 1857 as the marriage date for Arthur and Elizabeth, and corresponding dates for the births of Mary and Arthur, Jr. If the parents married by 20 or a little older, it's more likely that they were having children in the 1840's. Based on the names and dates you saw in the cemetery, this has to be the family.
