Surnames: Kennedy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3405.1 Message Board Post: The only Kennedy in the 1830 index was William Kennedy--but the indexes are notoriously wrong. In 1830, there was a man of age 50-60 living with with two other males and three other females. The older female was 40-50. Kennedy doesn't show up on the 1836 Tax List. It is possible that William Kennedy was one of the younger males, but there is no way to tell for sure. Older individuals frequently didn't show up on the Tax List--maybe there was an age exclusion. A John Kennedy was prosecuted for debt in 1830 Hawkins County. A John Kennedy sued Judith Smith for debt in 1830. The 1830 census may have been taken as late as the last half of 1831. I believe that the office census period ran from June 1830 to June 1831. William Kennedy showed up in a deposition in 1841. John Kennedy showed up in many other court records. There for a record of a John Kennedy as a creditior in an estate settlement administered by Richard Smith in 1843.

I am dizzy just from reading your letter. Today I was in the deed office of our courthouse. I found deed books one and two. Most of the deeds you have listed from deed books one and two are correct. I do not know where you received your information. I cannot say it where it comes from without checking and without seeing your souce material. Also ask about the WPA records, of which they have none. I went to the genealogy room in the H. B. Stamps Memorial Library and all we have in our records from WPA are the indices. The library only has in it collection," Hawkins County Deed Abstracts" 1801-1819 Abstracted by Joyce Martin Murray of Dallas, Texas. "Hawkins County Tennesse Grant Books", 1& 2. 1788-1819, by Billie R. McNamara. of TN. I told you about the old Libers, many are in the deed office as well as old grant books. This I can say. The souce you had listed as deed book 3.pg 191 That deed 22 mar 1792 Robert Gray, senr to Nicholas Hawkins. That is the listing in DB 3, pg 191. DB 3 pg 47. ( Feb. 1802 Daniel Syster, and James Breeding. The souce you have for deed book three is incorrect. Sorry, the best I can do. Thanks.

There is some evidence that John Mallett married the granddaughter of Hennis Lawson. Does anyone know for sure where this Lawson family cemetery is currently located and who is buried there? It is also implied in pension files that Hennis Lawson and Banks Lawson were brothers. It is also known that John Mallett's nephew married Curren Lawson's daughter. So, it all fits together. David

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3396.1.2 Message Board Post: Peggy, I appreciated your response to my inquiry about the deed books. The cites below give an indication of my problems. In most cases, I did not see these records myself. They were collected from various sources, and I don’t know how careful the researchers were about their citations. Some of them seem to be incomplete – e.g., the 1791 (5 Sept) record cite specifies “op. cit.” [referring back to the 1790 (2 Jan) record], but the page number (35) is lower than that of the earlier record (77). So that raises the question: is the 1791 deed actually recorded in Deed Book 3 rather than 2? The same thing applies to the last two in the list – the 10 June, 1793 record cite indicates “op. cit.” in reference to the preceding one but, again, has a lower page number, raising the question as to whether the later deed is really recorded in Book 4? Can you tell me how many deed books we are dealing with during that 1790-1801 peri! od? Should the 1795 transfer to Wm. Cocke have a deed book reference? Also, regarding the 1791 (21 Nov) record, which cites what appears to be a later compilation of several books into one that covers a 12-year period, am I right that you say that such compilations were put together by the WPA project and involved only indices? If that’s the case, I can’t figure how where the actual data came from. And is the exact title of the compilation as it appears in that 1791 cite or in the later one that specifies “Tennessee Records of Hawkins County, Deed Book No. 1, 1788 – 1800.”? Then there is the 1795 cite to “Hawkins County Tennessee Grant Books 1 & 2, 1787 – 1819. ???? I hate to bother you with these questions, but I’m sitting up in D. C., far away from Rogersville. I have checked the LoC and the D.A.R. collections, and they are both very limited in this area. Thanks for whatever help you can give me.
