Re: James Armstrong, I am looking for names of other children besides Samuel. It is highly likely there were other children. I believe Mary Armstrong outlived her husband, James, and died before 1856. Again, thank you so much! Alice

Surnames: Burton, Willis Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3385.3.1.1.2 Message Board Post: The Burton who was killed on his front porch in 1890s according to Burton tradition was Francis Marion Burton, son of William Burton. Francis Burton is known from a pension file as someone to be afraid of because he had notch on his gun for someone he killed. The reference was after the death of Iredell Willis. Francis Marion Burton was involved with Iredell Willis in a pension case and Francis ended up marrying one of the pension recipient--Nancy Ann Mallett. There is a lot of confusion about who Edward/Ned Burton was. Edward/Ned shows up in a number of court documents as late as 1869. But, there is no one in the census with that name. It is a bit of a mystery. The Burtons used a number of aliases in court documents.

Was M.E.C. Willis' first name Melvin and did he live in Hancock County? My James A. Willis was born around Aug. 1868 so would that fit the DOB for the son of Mel Willis? I have a cemetery record from Hawkins County Cemeteries, Vol. 2 for "Mel" Willis, civil war vet, brother to Cornelia Willis Horton and buried at Edens Cemetery. Is this the same Mel we are talking about?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XeB.2ACE/3385.3.1.1 Message Board Post: Kim: Also, I would not rule out M.E.C. "Mel" Willis as James' father. Mel Willis is the son of Larkin W. Willis, older brother of Iredell. Either way you would descend from the older Larkin Willis through son James Willis (b. 1800) who married Sarah Stapleton. Iredell's son James is supposed to have avenged his father's death by killing Ned Burton as he stood on his front porch and then fled the county and changed his name to avoid being caught. Mel Willis' son James may be the more likely candidate because Mel's other children moved to Wise County, Virginia. Mel apparently had several children with Ibby Winstead and also some with Eliza ________. My wife is a descendant of J.M.D. "Matt" Willis, son of old James, through his daughter Sally Willis who married McClellan "Clen" Lawson.

In his military file, he listed his closest living relative as Mrs. J Willis, or at least it appears that way to me. I think his parents are Iredell and Julia Willis but I need more proof. Maybe the pension application will contain some clue. Thanks again!

Does anyone have an obituary or death record for Daniel Ulysses Johnson, born 5-6-1884 in Hancock County, moved to Surgoinsville about 1900, and died in April 1970. I am looking for the names of his parents, and thought they would be mentioned in the obituary or death certificate. I am not related to them, I have a request for a lookup in Hancock County about this, from a lady who lives in another state. His father's name was "possibly" William Johnson, and his mother may have been a Johnson and married a Johnson. Thank you in advance for any help. Elizabeth Smiddy
