I am trying sort out a family thought maybe I could get some help. Starting with Stephen Johnson s/o Thomas Johnson We have found in family information that Keziah who married Alfred Bolen in Hawkins County,1849 was the half sister to Stephens sons Anderson, Abner and Thomas. Keziah used the name Johnson when she married Alfred. On the death record of Alfred and Keziahs oldest son it gives her maiden name as Maner. Everything we find says that Stephens sons were born in Indiana, Abner stated Clay County. I am guessing on this only at this point but, Stephen married Keziahs mother in TN then they went to Indiana where the boys were born. Stephen, according to Thomas' will, died before 1854.Two of the boys Anderson and Abner went back to Tennessee and I am guessing that all three of them did but no proof about Thomas. I know it was common for people to use whatever name that they chose so my guess is that Keziah just used Stephens since he was the stepfather. I would love to find out who Stephen married and who Keziahs parents were. Keziah was born 1820 in TN and the oldest boy of Stephens was born 1828. If things go according to plan (we can only hope) that means Stephen married between 1820-1828. Any ideas? Paula
I've been looking for years for my Wilsons on the Indian Rolls. Cant find them. I know one of them was collecting monies on Indian lands in Tennesee in the early 1920/30? I was told the person would have to be enrolled in the tribe to collect monies. Are there records of these kinds of transactions anywhere? The story is that we have Cherokee background, but I dont know that for sure. From that area of TN it could be Chickasaw/Choctaw. When I went there to do research, I was astonished to discover that the Bralley's were actually from Somerset, England, but had moved to Cork during Elizabeth I's reign (1588) and were part of the Plantation of Munster scheme to take land AWAY from the native Irish and give it to loyal, Protestant English. They lived there until they came to Wythe County, VA in 1769. They were indeed FROM Cork, but NOT Irish. I also went into the Moneyhun house on War Creek, went up to some houses and ask people about the Sizemores, and Moneyhuns,some of them were Sizemores,Willis and Moneyhun that still were there.Funny it felt like home. There I saw so many surnames of people I have seen on the "net", all of which must be some kin to each other, somewhere along the line. Everyone seems to have soo.... many questions. I think it would be nice to have one big family reunion, meet at Sneedville Tn. lets say June 2010,and bring all our research. What do you all think? Murrell. We know that William Murrell Sr had children in the 1830 census who do not show up in the later censuses in Missouri. So, it seems likely that he was married twice at least. When we looked at this before, there did not seem to be any proof of the existence of a Vina Cobb except for a Murrell family story about the two sisters. I know that Garrett Lane is on the Dawes List and that he married Nancy Ward the famous Cherokee and they had two daughters, who bear the name of Lane. I also know that I am directly related to Garrett Lane (1834-1900) and that the earlier one is related also, but I haven't tied him in. As you know, the Cherokee enrollment rules are so stringent it is very difficult to be accepted. I have Creech, Lane, Ingram, Marshall, Cude, Scruggs, Estes, Kesterson, Courtney, Pangle, Acuff and other lines from the first families. But at 75, I'm too old to keep hunting, I guess. Jeff Creech and his father Ira, are on the Dawes/Guion Miller and Ira is mentioned in Dr.Starr's book. Today, in parts of NC, Creech is known as a "Cherokee" name and also up around Ft.Worth, it has that reputation. Sorry, I didn't start out to tell my tale of woe. I wanted to say that in the messages, I've not noted any one's mentioning that frequently when the Indian man married a White woman, that he took HER surname. Everyone writes about the White men's marrying the Native American women, but it was both ways. I also wanted to mention that the Cherokee Museum in Cherokee, NC is a rich source of books. My cousin sent me the book about Thomas' Legion, think it is Storm in the Mountains. It is filled with the rosters of the Cherokee and mountain men and is a fascinating book about a little known subject. So, there should be lots of folks from Hawkins County in Taney, Wright, Howell, and Ozark counties. Thomas Lawson Jr's children moved to Ozark and Howell counties about 1893. I also noticed that Richard Lawson's son Calloway was living with James and Elizabeth Lawson Burton in 1870 Hawkins County. Why was that? Elizabeth was traditionally the daughter of Hennis Lawson, although there isn't any firm evidence for it as far as I know. Thomas E. Brown secured the marriage bond, which raises more questions. Was it Thomas Sr or Thomas Jr who secured the bond? The bond was usually secured by a close relative. Was Brown related to the Burtons or the Lawsons? Since these folks tended to marry cousins and corresponding inlaws it is a distinct possibility. We know from a pension file that William Lawson was the cousin of Curren Lawson, son of Banks Lawson. Mary Murrell's nephews and nieces married into the Banks Lawson family. The are many cases where someone was alternately Eliza, Elizabeth, and Lizzie. On the other hand, we do have families such as Banks Lawson where there is both an Eliza and Elizabeth in the family. As far as I know there is no evidence one way or the other. I know that Garrett Lane is on the Dawes List and that he married Nancy Ward the famous Cherokee and they had two daughters, who bear the name of Lane. I also know that I am directly related to Garrett Lane (1834-1900) and that the earlier one is related also, but I haven't tied him in. As you know, the Cherokee enrollment rules are so stringent it is very difficult to be accepted. I have Creech, Lane, Ingram, Marshall, Cude, Scruggs, Estes, Kesterson, Courtney, Pangle, Acuff and other lines from the first families. But at 75, I'm too old to keep hunting, I guess. Jeff Creech and his father Ira, are on the Dawes/Guion Miller and Ira is mentioned in Dr.Starr's book. Today, in parts of NC, Creech is known as a "Cherokee" name and also up around Ft.Worth, it has that reputation. Sorry, I didn't start out to tell my tale of woe. I wanted to say that in the messages, I've not noted any one's mentioning that frequently when the Indian man married a White woman, that he took HER surname. Everyone writes about the White men's marrying the Native American women, but it was both ways. I also wanted to mention that the Cherokee Museum in Cherokee, NC is a rich source of books. My cousin sent me the book about Thomas' Legion, think it is Storm in the Mountains. When I went there to do research, I was astonished to discover that the Bralley's were actually from Somerset, England, but had moved to Cork during Elizabeth I's reign (1588) and were part of the Plantation of Munster scheme to take land AWAY from the native Irish and give it to loyal, Protestant English. They lived there until they came to Wythe County, VA in 1769. They were indeed FROM Cork, but NOT Irish. It happened again in the 1800s to the slaves who were freed. So the fact remains that many Native Americans and people of color were named long after birth, by official policy. and those names had no relationship with what they were born with. The earliest example recorded would be Amonte Matuaka, who was renamed Lady Rebbecca Rolfe, commonly known to Americans as Pocahontas. It happened again in the 1800s to the slaves who were freed. So the fact remains that many Native Americans and people of color were named long after birth, by official policy. and those names had no relationship with what they were born with. Do you know where the knowledge of there even being a "Vina" Cobb comes from? Joel Cobb's Will (dated Feb. 18, 1861) tells us that Polly Frazier (likely, the 2nd wife of Waitman Frazier) is his granddaughter. Since we know that Waitman's second wife is "Polly Murrell", then it fits that one of Joel's daughters married William Murrell. I'm sorry, what I was trying to say is that I don't think she is the Elizabeth that married to Larkin STAPLETON in 1854. I think that the Elizabeth in Waitman FRAZIER'S 1850 family is the ne that married to William LAWSON. Hi everybody: Native American ancestry can be a touchy subject because academic genealogy relies on information from genuine source records, such as parish records, muster lists, minister's returns, etc. for the "scientific" part. Oral tradition and family stories supply the "traditional" part - the my grandfather told me, hand-me-down story component. When both are combined, a rich, evocative family history becomes a treasured account of the origins of our ancestors. The further back in time we try to go, the harder it gets, because frontier records become more and more scarce. Almost all of us have traditional stories about some parts of our ancestry, particularly regarding the period during the Colonial frontier days. If you rely solely on the scientific sources, you will have an academic family history with gratifying citations. If you rely solely on the traditional sources, you will have a colorful, personal family history with scant proof. As genealogists, we have to admit that both are beautiful and hopefully everyone will have gratification combining both. Sometimes the facts are actually wrong, even in the source records, and future generations will correct some things as new data becomes more and more available. Some things will simply never be proven, but must be retained for the romance and coloring they bring to the history. How an individual looks to you in a photograph is subjective - like looking at an ink blot and seeing a camel, but one thing is for sure, all Colonial marriages had to be performed by a licensed magistrate or minister of the gospel to be valid. Otherwise, residents of Kentucky, Virginia and old North Carolina would be fined and jailed. Now I know a lot of quirky things happened on the frontier, so it is probable that there were unions between Native Americans and the settlers. What is lost if we don't budge on what is rational and provable? What is gained if we do? I suggest we just let individuals bring all the richness, pageantry, mystery and humor to their own family histories and those of us that like footnotes, citations or references, type away. I love both. But in my history, if I have a family tale, I call it that and if I have a fact, I cite it in a footnote. In the end, everybody wins. In my own family (Bralley), my great-grandfather always said we were from County Cork, Ireland. We always believed that and wore green on St. Patrick's Day and dreamed of the old country. When I went there to do research, I was astonished to discover that the Bralley's were actually from Somerset, England, but had moved to Cork during Elizabeth I's reign (1588) and were part of the Plantation of Munster scheme to take land AWAY from the native Irish and give it to loyal, Protestant English. They lived there until they came to Wythe County, VA in 1769. They were indeed FROM Cork, but NOT Irish. Get the picture?
