Did Castleton have a brother named Littleton AND a son named Littleton? I think I may have added a generation. My information had Littleton being the long hunter and the son of Castleton...but the notes I have were dictated, from memory, to my older sister, who was trying frantically to write as quickly as mom could talk. I thoroughly enjoyed the stories. My connection has an illegitimate beginning, but I am glad it is there. The Brooks men are among my favorites. Burrell and Banks and never found together in a census or a document--except for a couple of interesting facts. There is the 1842 court case of John Starnes in which Banks Lawson and B. Lawson were witnesses but there isn't any reason in that document to believe that they were related. There is also the case of Joseph "Joel" Murrell who lived with Pleasant G. Murrell in 1860 Hawkins County. It is presumed in most genealogies that he was the son of Pleasant G. Murrell and Susan Trent or Elizabeth Lawson. His birth certificate says that his parents were Samuel Murrell and Mary Lawson. Now, in 1850 Hancock County Samuel Murrell live next to Mary Lawson who was the daughter of James Lawson and Nancy Amyx. Joel Murrell appears to have been born between 1852 and 1856, so Samuel and Mary at the later date would have been about 14 and 12 respectively when Joel was born--of legal marriage age. James Lawson is sometimes said to be the son of Burrell, although there isn't really any evidence for this either other than his father is named as B. Lawson. He was married twice; first to Serena Trent who died between 1900-1910, second to Maude Jane Greene. I have his death certificate. His father was John David Brooks, son of Thomas Brooks and Sophia Baldwin. The parents of this Thomas Brooks were Littleton Brooks and Elizabeth Wallen, who are my 4th great-grandparents. As far as I know, Joseph Brooks, also a son of Littleton and Elizabeth, did not have a son named John although Joseph was also married twice. Littleton Brooks was born 1758 at Nottoway Bridge, Brunswick Co., VA and died 19 Aug 1840 in Hawkins Co., TN. He first appears in the future northeast TN area when he followed his brother Castleton across the mountains and witnessed one copy of Henderson's Agreement with the Cherokees 17 March 1775 at Sycamore Shoals (now Elizabethton). Littleton served in the Revolutionary War and was at the battles of Island Flats (Kingsport) and Kings Mountain. I have his pension documents. Littleton was quite a character as Court documents in Rogersville, TN attest. He and his sons were in several scrapes with the Law. For example, he stole a horse when he was over 70 years old. Littleton did some hunting with the Wallens but the real long hunter in the family was his older brother Castleton whose expedition in 1769-1770 is well documented in Ramsey's Annals of Tennessee. The blasphemy you speak of did not happen on Sunday. It happened during a court session 17 March 1778 in the Washington Co., VA Court where he was fined 20 shillings for uttering four Blasphemous Oaths in open court when Elizabeth Kincannon Brooks and her brother, Andrew, were appointed administrators of Castleton's estate after he was killed by Indians in May 1777. Evidently Littleton wanted a piece of the action for himself. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
