T's & W's Notley Thomas William Thurman John Towner Wiliam Walling Benjamin Wallis Alexander Williams John Willis Francis Winstead Michael Yaws This concludes my postings of Rev. War Patriots buried in Hawkins County, Some may now be bried in Hancock County. There hasn't been a great deal of interest in these patriots burial. I can't understand why, however, we will continue our effort to charter a SAR Chapter in this very historic area of TN despict the non-support of the local media. John Willis was for sure a Rev. War Patriot. I don't have a death date but he was born 1764 and is suppose to be buried In Hawkins County according to SAR.. After my said wife's death, I want my Executors to attend to selling what of my estate remains at my wife's death and equally divide the proceeds of the same between my heirs and legatees; namely, James Willis, Samuel Willis, Patsy Kyle and Soloman Willis. Researchers also note other children as Ann, Betsy and Frances. I have no records of a John Willis from Hawkins County. Larkin was born in 1777. VA granted land to the Walker line until about 1800. When TN was formed in 1796, she claimed to the Henderson line which was about two miles north of the Walker line. Governing bacame a problem for both states and they compromised on a line midway between the Henderson and Walker lines about 1800. I don't believe that TN/VA line has changed much if at all since that time. The line was finally "marked in stone" about 1902! Unfortunately and as you know, proof in this particular area and time frame is a challenge at best and sometimes impossible due to the lack / destruction of records. In many cases, circumstantial evidence is the only available information thus far. I was not there and don't really know how they met ;^). It may be possible that they were next-door neighbours. They probably lived near each other and / or met through some familiel connection / association much as we still do. We do have some possible clues however. Dauswell, John and Shadrack MONK and Dauswell, John and Shadrack ROGERS lived near each other as listed in the old tax lists - but start with the 1830 Hawkins Co., TN census and work backward. It appears that the Monks lived in the now tri-county area - Hawkins Co. TN and the part of Russell Co., VA that later became Scott & Lee Co.. A blurred border line area and near Dauswell/Dozwell Rogers (Clinch River / Copper Ridge area). See 1830 census. The name Dauswell runs in this Monk line and shows up in OH near other persons from TN of the same area. The NW border area of Hawkins Co. TN (e.g. 1836 Districts 3, 4 and 5), SW Scott Co., VA, and SE Lee Co. (formerly part of Russell Co., Upper District) are all a bit of a blur. The state line is said to have been disputed and re-surveyed and moved. I've also read that sometimes the taxes were collected / reported by the person who had best access to the areas causing some blurring of the lines meaning that VA could have collected on the TN side and vice versa although no proof. I've e-mailed you some information. For some reason it would not allow me to post it (too much info ?). Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. No, no documents that I know of. Right now just stories. I have photos with persons in them that 'look Indian' but I dont know the relationship. There is some writing on the back in pencil, but it is too faint to read. Laura I have a Delphia Ward/Bragg that I believe married a Fielding Carpenter. She was born aprox 1780 in NC or VA. I am wondering if her mother's maiden name was Delph. does your research show a Delph marrying a Ward or a Bragg maybe aprox 1750 to 1765 time frame? Maybe they had a female that married a Carpenter? Thanks!
