He did genealogy the old fashioned way by interviewing some of the long time residents of Hawkins Co.'s and transcribing bible records and his interviews onto paper. These records that he collected are now on microfiche in Stamps Library, Rogersville, TN. Before they were on microfilm they were paper records. Price interviewed many old residents in the 1940's. Often times during the interview he would come across someone in that family who kept the family records, usually in a bible. It may also include info about immigration to this country, when and where from. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Could you do a lookup on William Williams b. 1809 m. Catherine Shanks, and Gabriel Phillips b. ~1759 m. Miliah Keele both these families are early families of Hawkins Co. I would like to know parents and siblings of Wm Williams. Where he was born. When and where did this family immigrate to America. I suspect that his father died young, and his mother remarried. On Gabriel, what kind of documentation do you have on His parents and grandparents, when did they immigrate and from what country. From what I know he was born 1881, Hawkins Cty. and died Feb. 2 1962 and buried in Old Union Methodist Church Cemetery. This Gid was married to Effie Skelton In one of my other searches, I ran across some evidence that there was another Gabriel in Greene County. My Gabriel was one of my Grandfathers Brothers, I think. My line is John R., from James Henry, from William K., from Asahel and Rebecca Phillips who originally came from W. VA. around 1800 and first settled in Sullivan County and later ones moved to Hawkins. My GG Grandfather William K. was married to a Mary, who was born around 1828-30. My mother was from Benjamin Smith who moved from Hawkins County Tennessee to Norton, Va., where he died in the early 1900's. Her Mother's family was Wilsons who supposedly came from Wilson, NC, and settled in the McPheeters Bend Community. My mother later moved back to Hawkins County and Married my Dad John R. Phillips, who was ! widowed by his first wife Elizabeth (Betty) Shelton who had children by a previous marriage, but her and my Dad had no children. I was born on a farm near Keplar, North Fork, Burem Road. There is also a Millie Phillips from Jacob, Asahel who married a Henry Frank Clifton and she is buried in Simmons Cemetery, Hawkins Cty. I cannot verify any of this info as it was given to me by a third party. There are Phillips buried all over Hawkins County, but I do not know if they are all related. I hope this helps, if you have other info please advise. Jim Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The public is invited to this event, which will be held on June 12 at the Hawkins County Rescue Squad meeting room, 955 East McKinney Avenue, Rogersville, Tennessee. "For nearly two hundred years, writers and researchers have speculated about the origins of the Melungeons," says Wayne Winkler, president of MHS. "For the most part, the story of the Melungeons has been told through myths and legends. The Melungeon Historical Society believes that answers will be found through scholarly research." Presentations at the MHS conference will begin at 10 a.m. and will cover topics such as the origin and historical uses of the term "Melungeon," DNA research on Melungeon families, and other topics related to the multi-ethnic people first documented in the Clinch River region in the early 19th century. The use of DNA technology in genealogy will be covered by Roberta Estes, founder of DNAExplain, a Michigan company that analyzes and interprets individual DNA tests. Other presenters include Jack Goins, Hawkins County Archivist and author of "Melungeons and Other Pioneer Families;" Kathy Lyday-Lee, a professor at Elon College who taught a course on Melungeons; and Kathy James, who will present genealogical information on the Gibson and Collins families. "This conference is of special interest to those who want to learn more about the Melungeons," said Winkler, "but it is also designed to benefit anyone interested in genealogy and especially in the use of DNA technology to trace family lines." The conference is free, but donations are suggested to help promote the work of the Melungeon Historical Society. Contact: Wayne Winkler 423.439.6441 winklerw@...
