    3. List, I got snowed in today. Here is some information I put together on Daniel Smith. What are your thoughts? Merry Christmas, David Daniel and Clarissa O. Smith were married before 1820 as they appear in the census of that year in Hardin County Tennessee. Their oldest child of record, Amanda Smith Duncan, was born in 1821in Tennessee. Some material that was provided to me by Ed Adams suggests that Clarissa was a Sloan before marriage. Ed Sent me this: Alexander Sloan, Sr. appeared to have settled near what is now Clifton, TN. He was married to Ruthy Unknown. Alexander Sloan died about 1825. He is found in Hardin Co. as early as the 1820 census but is not in the home on the 1830 census. Ruthy became the head of the household in 1830. Ruthy died in Hardin Co. prior to 1860 as there is a court record of the estate settlement among the heirs. The court record shows Alexander Sloan, Jr. vs. Daniel Smith and wife Clara (Clarissa); Alfred Kirby and wife Zabby; William Hill and wife Nancy; William Sloan; Simpson Sloan; Bullard Sloan and wife Dorinda; Willaim Hogan; Marian Hogan; John Hogan; Elizabeth Hogan and Alexander Hogan. (Hogan's may be grand children) Alexander II was asking for Ruthy Sloan's land for keeping and support of Ruthy; however, the court ordered that the land be sold at public action and the money divided. Property was in Range 6 Section 5 on the TN. River. Property was sold to Daniel Smith as the highest bidder on 6/4/1860 for $400. Plesant Smith and James Adams signed a two year note with him. Ruth Sloan died in Hardin Co. TN.(Page 273) $474. ($67.71) to be divided between seven (7) heirs. Clerk and Master Minutes-Hardin Co. TN. Roll # 1, Vol. C: Page 86, 136, 180, 250, 273. Page 251- Daniel Smith is dead (court date 2/23/1866) and note has not been paid. ___________ I have checked the census for as many of the above as I can find. Alfred Kirby, b. 1812 NC, was married to Debby, b. 1817 TN. William B. Hill was born in 1810 TN and his wife Nancy, b. 1820 TN. The only Hogan I could find in Hardin County was Thomas Hogan in 1840. Thomas Hogan 212001-200001 in the First C. D. The other families lived in the 12th or 13th C. D. near Saltillo. Alexander Sloan Jr., was living in the 13th C. D. in 1850. 1850 Census, Hardin Co., TN 138-138 Alex, Sloan 29 TN farmer Nancy 26 NC John 7 TN Simpson 5 TN (William in 1860, Simon in 1870 & William S. in 1880) Alexander 3 TN Clara 4/12 TN(Clarissa in other censuses) Ruth 55 SC (Age has to be 65?) If I have the age correct, which apparently I don't, Ruth Sloan is only 5 years older than Clarissa Smith, therefore couldn't be her mother. There is no mistake, it says age 55 on the 1850 census, but, the 1840 and 1830 censuses gives her probable birth date as 1785 not 1795 as shown in 1850. In 1830, Ruth has three sons and three daughters living at home. She has one son and two daughters at home in 1840. I note that Alexander Sloan named two of his children, Daniel and Clarissa. ________________ The Wills of Clarissa Smith and her Son Pleasant Alexander Smith, a surveyor and a physician, were provided to me by Pam Williams. Will of Clarissa Smith (Wife of Daniel Smith, 1797-1866) Clarissa appointed Daniel M. Smith and Samuel G. Dickey as her executors on February 8th (the year is missing). Clarissa declared that after here just debts and funeral expenses were paid that her assets should be divided as follows: To my daughter Amanda Duncan, $5, (wife of William C. Duncan). To my daughter Louisa Hardin, one bed, (wife of Benjamin Hardin). To my daughter Genetta Russell, one bed, (wife of Joab A. Russell). To the Heirs of my daughter Mary C. Smith , deceased, $5 in money,(wife of James C. Smith ?) To my son P. A. Smith, one bed. To my son Daniel M. Smith all the balance of my real and personal estate with all of my household and kitchen furniture, unless he should not live to take possession or have no heirs, then it is my will for my daughter, Louisa Hardin and her heirs to have it all, this my last will and testament signed sealed and delivered in the presents of: Test: H. W. Davis A. K. Dickey her Clarissa + Smith mark Henry W. Davis, S. J. G. Dickey and A. K. Dickey were neighbors, Davis having lived close by since before 1850 and all three men living near by in 1860. That year, Davis is age 57, Samuel Dickey is 38 and Alexander Dickey is 37. They may be kin to the Smith family, but I don't know how. Through the above Will and the census following, I have put together what I think is the Daniel Smith Family: Daniel Smith, 1797-1866 Clarissa O. Sloan Smith, 1800- before 1870 Children: 1. Amanda Smith, 1821, m. William C. Duncan 2. Louisa Smith, 1821, m. Benjamin Hardin 3. Pleasant Alexander Smith, 1824, m. Mary ? 4. Jeannette Smith, 1825, m. Rev., Capt. Joab A. Russell 5. Marcella E. Smith, 1829 6. Daniel M. Smith, 1831. I find a D. M. Smith in "A" Company, 21st "Wilson's" Cavalry CSA. The Capt. of that Company was Daniel's brother-in-law, Joab A. Russell. 7. Mary C. Smith, 1833, m. James C.
