Hi David, I'm pasting a letter from you dated 4-17-2003 below. It covers the Census records you requested for Joab Russell, however, I've been unable to locate the Methodist Publication for Jeanette Smith. <<Thanks for the material on the Russell Family. I became interested in Joab A. Russell because of his Civil War Activities. He was a good soldier, having fought with Robertson's Cavalry Company (later became G Company of the First Confederate), 52nd Tennessee Infantry, 51st Consolodated Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and last, 21st "Wilson's" Cavalry regiment under Forest. As you all already knew, he moved to DeSota Co. MS soon after the war. See 1870 Census below. I have found a J. A. Russell the right age, 53, living with a Watson in Henry Co. TN in 1880. If that is him, where is his family? The census lists his occupation as a minister which is consistant with what Joab said in one of his letters. I Could not find His son Daniel Russell in and 1870 census in Texas. However, there is a Daniel living in Haywood County TN in 1880, age 28. He should have been 29 or 30. There was another Joab A. Russell, son of John R. Russell, living in Hardin County, he may have been in the Civil war, but he didn't die until 1873. I have not proof yet, but, I think Jennetta, the wife of Joab, may have been a daughter of Daniel Smith. Daniel and Pleasant were both Smith names. 1850 Census, Hardin Co., TN 61-61 Joab A. Russell. I did find the following listed at the Tennessee State Library and Archives Joab A. Russell found in: Civil War Confederate Pension Applications Index Note: The name Russell, Joab A. appears on a Tennessee Confederate Application Applicant Information Name: Russell, Mattie County of residence at time of application: Humphreys, TN Application type: Widow Application numbers associated with this individual: W10206 Military Information Soldiers Name: Joab A. Russell State Served: TN Information: A photocopy of this pension application may be obtained from the Tennessee State Library and Archives. Please contact the Tennessee State Library and Archives for pricing and availability at the following address: Tennessee State Library and Archives, Research Services, 403 Seventh Avenue North, Nashville, Tennessee 37243-0312 Also, another J. A. Russell was killed 1862 in the Civil War. Have no idea his relation to Joab A. Russell. Then I found a tax record for a Joab Russell and sure wonder his relationship to the Russells of Hardin Co. as Independence Co. AR is the next county over to Jackson Co. where William Henry and wife Elizabeth Russell, and also, Robert R. Russell and family moved in about 1853 from Hardin Co.
