I've been trying to sort out a mystery. Dorothy White has been helping me with this, but we've come to a stopping place. Can anyone help? I'm looking at the children of Henry Long (b. 1740) and Anna Catherine Pence. One of these is a Mary Long who Catherine lists in her will as Mary Polk with Archibald Long Polk as a child. Who is Archibald's father? I think I've located Archibald and his family in Georgia. Future references to Mary list her name as Mary Long. Also, there is a sales ledger book that lists a Charles Polk, Sr. see: Account Book for Melchior's Store ( Oct 1792- ) John Melchior Papers Private Collection 1531, Cabarrus County NC North Carolina State Archives http://www.angelfire.com/nc/benjthomasofansonnc/meli.html Among the names listed underneath his is a Mary Long. What is the connection between Charles Polk, Sr. and Mary that she would be using Charles' account. Is Charles related to the father of Archibald? Which Charles Polk is this? I can't seem to nail him down for sure. Thanks for any insight. Tommie 1850 Census, Jasper Co., Georgia, ed 46, page 104 Polk, Archibald L. Tommie, I have had the same problem with Archibald Long Polk. I haven't had any success yet, having basically the same information you have. However I did not know about the "Account Book for Melchior's Store." The Charles Polk listed was probably Capt. Charles T. Polk, 1732-1821. He had a son Charles Jr., usually known as Charley, but he was born in 1784 which would make him a little young. My ancestor, Charles T. Polk, born in 1780 and living in the same area would also be too young. I think Mary Long was born in 1778. One would tend to believe that Mary may have had some connection to one of Capt. Charles' sons? I have even considered that Archibald might be the son of my Charles T. Polk? Charles later married Catherine Clontz who was a niece of Mary Long. Mecklenburg County Tax Lists, etc. by Ferguson shows George W., Archibald L., Charley and William Polk on the 1823 Tax List in Capt. David Kerr's Company. They were there again in 1824. Also in this company were: Jacob, Henry, Adam and Jeremiah Clontz as well as Henry, Jacob and John Long. Most of these guys were on the 1815 Tax List also which included my ancestor Charles T. Polk. I think he moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1823 or 24. Not much help.
