    1. Re: [TNHARDIN] OneWorldTree Preview -- some thoughts on the matter.

    3. Thank you for forwarding this information. I've never submitted any info to Ancestry.com because I've never thought my info is actually complete. Additionally, I've seen some real mistakes on the work that has been submitted so I just steered clear. I do subscribe to other services, which by the way are actually produced by or for Ancestry, by paid workers. I have read the submission agreement. I have no quarrel with submitters not getting any monetary compensation. If you opt to SHARE with other researchers, then SHARE it must be. That leads to the other problem, Ancestry taking the accumulated data, for which it paid essentially nothing, offering it for sale and pocketing the profit. The material will no doubt be copyrighted. Then, you might not be able to use any of that material on your own website or any in publication/article you might author. I dare say, very few of you have read the Millenium copyright law. It is another example of a special interest group moving a law through Congress, with little or no attention paid by the general citizenry. Of course, part of that special interest group decides what gets publicity and what does not. So, it went quietly through. Read it, you won't like it. I have no problem with free enterprise and encourage it. I do have a problem with people, either knowingly or unknowlingly giving away their intellectual property to be copyrighted (and thus restricted ) to any enterprise, without the counsel of a lawyer who specializes in intellectual property. Do I think anyone will be sued by Ancestry? Probably not, unless you actually publish and sell anything you've previously "shared" with Ancestry. But, legal advice does not come cheap and I am not a lawyer. I have however had reason to seriously examine the Millenium copyright law. (Family businesses can't use the family surname, unless we want to hire some of those lawyers to deal with the ones employed by a certain computer company, who will assert a violation. It is a toss up who wins, but if we lose . . . ) Just guessing, but seems like 98% of us are just hobby genealogists. Even so, I hope enough people opt to keep their material out of the proposed sale of One World Tree to make Ancestry reconsider its plans. K Dell Jerry W.
