Please, someone out there help me! My name is Rufus Buie and I am desperately seeking in formation on the Buie and Nichols Families of Hardin, Tennessee. My gg grandfather William W. Buie was born October 30, 1814, probably in Hardin County or across the state line in Alabama. He married Martha Farrow Nicholas, born May 14, 1816, in Hardin County, between 1830 and 1835, in Hardin County. I believe W. W. Buie was the last son of John Buie or the first son of John Buie, Jr. There is a listing of a John Buie and his family in the 1830 Census of Hardin Co. and a listing of the families of John Buie, Sr., John Buie,Jr., and Duncan R. Buie in the 1840 Census of Hardin Co. In the 1840 Census John and John were in the 7th Civil Dist. and Duncan was in the 3rd Dist. Hardin County Records reveal the following: 1833 Census of free male inhabitants over 21 (page 219) Cornelius Booie John Booie _____ Booie first name not given 1836 Tax List, Hardin Co. District #7 John Buie (page 257) District #8 William Buie (page 765) District #8 Cornelius Buie (page 765) the 1837 list William and Cornelius Buie as above but no listing for John Buie. The General Administration and Settlement Book B, 1836-1842, Page 103-104, Hardin Co., Tenn. gives the following info.: Inventory of the Estate of Cornelius Buie, deceased Oct. 20, 1838. John Buie, Administrator. The following relatives were mentioned: Duncan Buie, Elizabeth Buie, John Buie and Margaret. I have pages from a book (name of book unknown) that mention the Buie Family. On page 32, Date at top of page - 1 Oct., 1838. BUIE, CORNELIUS - John Buie and Elizabeth Buie, appointed administrators of the estate of Cornrlius Buie. (same page) Buie, Cornelius - Commissioners appointed to lay off a year's provisions for the widow of Cornelius Buie. John Buie submitted an application for a Revolutionary War pension from Hardin Co., dated 17 March 1835. I have a copy of this pension in which he states that his father was Duncan Buie, and he (John) was born in Scotland in the year 1759. (His father, Duncan, came from the Isle of Jura.) My Buie Family was from Scotland, settling in North Carolina near the Cape Fear River, moving to Tennessee and ending up in Hardin County. As far as I can tell, they were yeoman farmers, Presbyterian in Faith, small land owners, probably no slaves or very few. When William W. Buie married Martha Farrow Nichols, he became a Methodist, possibly because she was. William W. Buie and his family moved to Hot Spring County, Arkansas, about 1845. On the Nichols Family I have the following information. Martha Farrow Nichols' father was James Nichols and her mother was Mary Nancy _____?____. In Deed Book H, page 23 & 24 an entry reads, Nichols' heirs to deed Hugh Bivens - filed for registration 5th April 1847, at 11 O'clock. Where as by decent from James Nichols deceased and we William Nichols, Solomon C. Nichols, John R. Boyd, Harmon B. Gibbs, William W. Buie, Drucella Nichols, Mary Nichols we have divided title to and now hold and undivided interest in a tract of land in the state of Tennessee, Hardin County & District #7, range 12 on the waters of Horse Creek. (The description of this land doesn't seem to be complete.) Signed, January 12, 1939 William Nichols Soloman C. Nichols John R. Boyd Harmon B. Gibbs William W. Buie Drucilla Nichols Mary Nichols Another mention of this deed with full description of the land is in Deed Book H, page 7, with same people. As sale of the estate of Nancy Nichols. - Returned by William Nichols, administrator of the estate of Nancy Nichols, March 1840. (page 208-209) Please keep im mind that Buie can be spelled: Booie, Bouie, Bowie, etc. Also the Farrow in the Nichols Family name may have a variation such as Farror. As you can see, the father of William W. Buie is my primary problem. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated and anyone that can give me an undisputed name with proof of W. W. Buie's father will be rewarded. I will gladly pay for any work you may do to solve my mystery if you will let me know in advance. I am researching the following families: Buie, Marks, Eaves, Glover, Norton, Attwood, Barnett, Meriwether, Tolefree, Hewes, etc., and will help if you need information on any of these families.
