    3. I, too, would like to know more about Hamburg. My father, Giles Clay Smith was born there. 3. Mary and List, I don't know a great deal about Hamburg. I know it was a very active town before TVA. TVA didn't flood it or do anything to the town, but the new dams allowed boats to go up river all the way to Knoxville. Before TVA Muscle Shoals was about the upper end of the boat trade. In the summer time when the water was low, Hamburg was the destination point for goods to be delivered to that side of the river as the shoals at Pickwick would not allow travel further up the river. Therefore, the new dams and locks allowed boats to pass right by Hamurg. Then the dimise of the boat trade and a much better road systems for truck travel, brought about the complete demise of Hamburg. It isn't gone it is still there, most of the old business buildings are gone but a few of the old houses remain. There are several recreation type houses along the river bank.
