    1. [TNHARDIN] Owens, Hill, Sloan Families
    2. Does anyone know anything about the Owens, Hill, & Sloan families of Hardin Co TN?? I would like to know more about my heritage regarding these 3 families. I am descended from Clara Sloan, my great grandmother.? She still has a son alive and living in CA.? She was born 20 April 1893 in Sardis, Hardin Co TN.? I have good memories of visiting her house before she passed away in 1971, I was only?7 years old & our family was unable to attend the funeral because we were out of the country.? Clara, or Grandma Teed as everyone knew her, took care of her sister Mary (Aunt Mary) her whole life.? Aunt Mary was mildly handicapped, and I don't know in what way, because she was just Aunt Mary to me when I was little.? She seemed to help Grandma Teed as much as any other woman might, but that is through the eyes of a child.? Aunt Mary never married.? They were both very stout women, I remember coming to visit, and I always knew when we visited them, because I knew the smell of their house.? Everyone's house had it's own distictive smell when I was little.? My sister says she remembers the same thing. Clara & Mary's parents were Daniel "Danny" M. Sloan (born abt 1855 & died abt Dec 1900) and Nancy J. Lee "Nanny" Owens (born Sept 1866, died about Jan 1901).? Danny & Nanny are said to have died within 2 weeks of each other, of "consumption", which was probably a flu virus.? The children were raised by their maternal grandparents, and I'll get to them soon.? The childrens names were: Mary (lived with Clara & never married), Thomas Sloan(never married that I know of), Clara Sloan, Warren Hastings Sloan, Nancy Leora "Ora" Sloan, and Lura Sloan.? Warren Hastings Sloan only had one daughter who has since passed away, unmarried & no children that I know of.? Her fortune was taken by a person who was supposed to be taking care of her in the last years of her life.? Aamy Sloan was her name, and I met her.? She was a very nice, professional lady who seemed to work hard.? Ora Sloan married Dossie Lilburn Hopper, and I would love to hear from this branch of the tree.? I only have two ! children listed, Elmer and Frankie, but no other info.? Lura Sloan married?a Rube Sykes, and I think they live(d?) in TX.? I have no children listed for them either.? I would love to correspond with someone on that branch of the tree. Moving on, we have Danny's parents, Alexander P. Sloan and Nancy Murphy.? I may have corresponded with some of the researchers on the Sloan/Murphy connections already, but would like to reestablish some contacts and see what else we can come up with. We also have Nanny's parents, John D. Owens, b. May 1833 TN?and Nancy/Mary Polly "Nan" Hill b. Jun 1837 TN.? These two raised Danny's and Nanny's children from 1901 on.? They were married on Aug 28, 1862 according to their headstone.? They got married during the Civil War, a hard time. John would have been 29 and Mary V. would have been 21. 1860 Hardin Co TN census: dist 13, Saltillo PO W B Hill, 83, m, farmer, 300, TN (age is incorrect I think, 1850 census shows correct age). Nancy Hill, 46, f, TN Mary V, 19, f, TN Leroy E, 18, m, farm laborer, TN (this is actually Levoy). According to an 1850 Hardin Co TN census: W B Hill, 40, laberor, TN Nancy Hill, 30, female, TN Susan C., 12, female, TN Polly Van?, 10, f, TN Vera (Levoy) J, 6, m, TN Eathalinda I., 1, f, TN Now the reason I know this is my Hill family, is that I have a connection on my dad's side of the family that connects up with Susan C., and just made the connection to this family this past summer.? I would LOVE to talk to anyone who knows more about this Hill family (families).? Thank you! 3. Deborah, I don't have much on these families and I am not sure if this Owens family is who you are looking for. I am aware of some of the stuff you wrote. Mrs. Sloan was the librarian at Central High School about 50 years ago when I was there. Jim Hopper filled me in on some of this family material as I ate lunch with him most week days for the past 20 years. David Here is some information on Daniel Smith and Alex. Sloan: Alexander Sloan, Sr. appeared to have settled near what is now Clifton, TN. He was married to Ruthy Unknown. Alexander Sloan died abt. 1825. He is found in Hardin Co. as early as the 1820 census but is not in the home on the 1830 census. Ruthy became the head of the household in 1830. Ruthy died in Hardin Co. prior to 1860 as there is a court record of the estate settlement among the heirs. The court record shows Alexander Sloan, Jr. vs. Daniel Smith and wife Clara; Alfred Kirby and wife Zabby; William Hill and wife Nancy; William Sloan; Simpson Sloan; Bullard Sloan and wife Dorinda; Willaim Hogan; Marian Hogan; John Hogan; Elizabeth Hogan and Alexander Hogan. (Hogan's may be grand children) Alexander II was asking for Ruthy Sloan's land for keeping and support of Ruthy; however, the court ordered that the land be sold at public action and the money divided. Property was in Range 6 Section 5 on the TN. River. Property was sold to Daniel Smith as the highest bidder on 6/4/1860 for $400. Plesant Smith and James Adams signed a two year note with him. Ruth Sloan died in Hardin Co. TN.(Page 273) $474. ($67.71) to be divided between seven (7) heirs. Clerk and Master Minutes-Hardin Co. TN. Roll # 1, Vol. C: Page 86, 136, 180, 250, 273. Page 251- Daniel Smith is dead (court date 2/23/1866) and note has not been paid. _________________________________________________________________________ Thomas and son Daniel were enumerated in the 1830 census of Hardin County as follows: Daniel Owen 00001-1001 Thomas Owen 002110001-00100001 Other sons of Thomas and his wife Mary were: David, Thomas J, and William H. 3. Hi OWEN(S) Cousins, I, too, descend from Daniel OWEN(S) through his daughter, Amanda "Mandy," b Feb 1852 TN d 1918 (Pemiscot) MO m ca 1871 Thomas J. GARNER. A recent breakthrough was to find the correct GARNER line - still to be proved. My OWENS line ends with Daniel b ca 1805 CT and Nancy b ca 1812 KY. They were my GG Grandparents. I see some new info in this thread but will appreciate/love to have/ further info on the OWEN(S) line. I will share any info I have about Amanda and her issue or the GARNER line. Larry Foster Solvang, CA Hi David, we met in your office in Savannah. Thanks for all the info. It appears the census taker (?) in 1850 added an s onto the Owen name. Later, some of the family kept the S but most did not. Daniel and Nancy Owen were the parents of John R. Owen, b. 1851, m. Ellen Alexander. John R. and Ellen were the parents of Laura Ida Owen, my grandmother, who married William Chesley Alexander. Laura and Chesley were the parents of my Mother, Nona Beryleen (Alexander), m. Benjamin Roosevelt Duke. Margie R. 1. Re: [TNHARDIN] Owens, Hill, Sloan Families
    2. Hi Mr. Adams, Yes, we have corresponded in the past, I used to live in North Carolina, moved from there in 1996.? My family history research has been hit or miss since then.? I am at a point where I need to get this in order & transfer it to a medium where I can share it with others easily.? FYI, I am descended from two of William Hill's children, who you have listed (W. B. Hill on some census records), so if you would like this info for your webpage, I would be glad to provide it.? I re-visited it lately, someone was kind enough to send the link through this Hardin exchange, and I verified that I did indeed have that info correct so far. I am excited to reconnect with everyone!
