Here is the Cagle connection to the McMahans. George Cagle, below was a bother to my g/g/g/grandfather, Henry Cagle, Jr. 1780-1857. Both these Cagles died in New Madrid Co., MO and are buried somewhere there, probably near Moorehouse, MO? George Cagle ca 1780's-1840 George left Cabarrus Co., NC for Hardin County TN in the early 1820's. On May 31, 1826, George Cagle entered 100 acres of land in Hardin County and sold this land in 1834. George was married to Elizabeth Freeman and had a large family. Their children were: John S. Cagle, b. ca 1827 Charles, b. ca 1829 Rhoda, b. 1830 Nancy C. b. 1834 Mary L. "Polly," b. 1838 Deborah Tabitha, b. 1840 George and his family moved to New Madrid Co., MO in 1838 where George was killed by a falling tree in 1840. His wife and children moved back to Hardin County. Elizabeth and the rest of her family continued to live on their 54 1/4 acre farm on Sawmill Branch located about one mile east of where the branch is crossed by Tennessee Highway 128, until ca the 1920's. They were shown in the 1850 census as follows: 1850 Census, Hardin County Tennessee ELIZABETH CAGLE 44 NC Rhoda 20 TN NANCY C. 16 TN POLLY 12 TN (Mary L.) DEBORAH 09 TN Elizabeth and daughter, Nancy C., were very early members of the Harmony Cumberland Presbyterian Church established in 1852. They were among the group which split from the church to form Union Valley Church in October of 1861. This new church was a short walk from where Elizabeth lived. George and Elizabeth's oldest daughter, Rhoda, b. ca 1830, was married to Elijah Green. One of Elijah and Rhoda's granddaughters, daughter if Billy Green, was Mrs. Sula Majors who resided in the Cerro Gordo community until her death in 1986. The second daughter, Nancy C., was born ca 1834. She never married and death date and place of burial is not known. She, as well as her mother, were probably buried at Morris Cemetery which was located adjacent to Union Valley Church. Third was Mary L. "Polly", b. 08/04/1838, d. 12/31/1928, buried at Mt. Herman Cemetery. Polly was married first to William H. Polk from which marriage came two daughters: Tennessee P. born 10/25/1863, died 03/20/1936 who was married to Alexander Bain, and Bettie born 11/22/1861, died 04/25/1947 and was married to James T. Morris. The marriage of William and Polly was cut short by the Civil War. William Polk was killed by Yankee Bushwhackers, being shot while sitting on a rail fence in his yard by a neighbor Jesse Dobbins. He was buried at the old Bain Cemetery which was relocated to Mt. Herman Cemetery a few years ago. His sand rock headstone reads: Wm POKE. After William's death, Polly married a second time to William R. McMahan, the Grandfather of J. R. Stricklin, etal. The fourth and youngest daughter of George and Elizabeth Freeman Cagle was Deborah Tabatha Elizabeth, born 11/18/1840, died 04/29/1922, and was buried at Harmony Cemetery. She was married to William H. Tidwell ca 1859-60. To this marriage was born a son, William H., born 03/16/1861, died 06/03/1898. The elder William H. Tidwell may have been killed during the Civil War. In 1870 Deborah and son William were enumerated in the household of Elizabeth Cagle. On the 7th day of December 1874, Deborah was married for the second time to her first cousin, John Cagle, a widower who's first wife, Eliza Catherine Polk had died of smallpox on 01/08/1873. John was a son of Henry Cagle, Jr. mentioned above and my g/g/grandfather. David
