David, In the diary that my ggrandfather John Riley McMahan kept he mentions farming the Tidwell place in the late 1880's and early 90's. I wondered if it belonged to the Tidwell you mentioned and if so where is it located. I still haven't made it to the Hardin County courthouse to look at the deeds to the land William Riley and John Riley owned. Annette Stricklin Williams awilliams1@mindspring.com
Annette, Pollymac's sister, Deborah Tabitha Cagle, 1840-1922, first married a William H. Tidwell and later her daughter by John Cagle, Deborah Tabitha Elizabeth Cagle, also married a William Tidwell, nephew of her mother's first husband. This Tidwell family lived around Mt Herman, and most eventually settled on Boone Creek. When I first remember, Johnny Tidwell lived at Cross Roads and his brother Joe lived on Boone Creek. Some of this family could have owned land anywhere in the general area. A check of the deeds might tell. The Hardin County Historian is always full of information for those of us who enjoy reading about Hardin County, but I found the Military Land Grants of special interest. Listed was a grant to John Watson for 160 acres in Hardin County that had a completely different number than the original document for 160 acres of land on Hardin's Creek that I have in my possession. I ordered a copy, which you will find below, hoping for information on possible military service. Curiously, the county on the document shows a blank for the county, but the Index lists it as in Hardin County. To the best of my knowledge the Hatchie River does not run through Hardin County. I am in the process of checking out Ferdinand Hamilton but have not found anything of significance yet. Anyone ever run into this name on land grants, or have any knowledge of him? Thanks in advance, Jane October 6, 1822 The State of Tennessee, No. 20458 To all whom these presents shall come, Greeting: Know Ye, that Entry of Certificate No. 2025 dated the 21 day of November, 1820 ???? by the Board of Commissioners ? for West Tennessee to Ferdinand Hamilton for 102 acres and entered on the 5th day of February 1822 by A:829. In the Military Land Grant list was a grant for 300 acres to James Graham, my gggf. Can you tell me where to order a copy of the original grant? Jane, Until 1823, McNairy was part of Hardin County, or the Western District. The Tennessee Valley Divide runs north and south through McNairy Co., running near Purdy. Most everything west of Purdy in McNairy Co. flows into the Hatchie River which begins in Mississippi, runs north through Bolivar then west between Brownsville and Covington and continues all the way to the Mississippi River. I found Thomas Henderson living in McNairy County in 1830, nothing on the others.
