    3. Hi Steve; It is possible there is a connection. I am not sure where the name Howell originally came into our family. My grandfather, Howell Andrew McClain, was named after his grandfather, Howell Jackson Rayburn. He went by Jackson Rayburn or H. J. Rayburn. I did notice in my research that there were quite a few people in Lauderdale Co., with the surname of Howell and wondered if maybe there was a connection. The Rayburns and McClain's went to AL from TN and I am pretty sure it was from Hardin Co., as that is the county they went back to in TN when they left Lauderdale Co., AL. And I noticed that some of the Howell's in Lauderdale Co., were born in TN also. I have a Walter Rayburn who married a Eva Howell. Her father was William Howell, born in 1867 in AL. This Howell family and some of my Rayburn families were all living in Marion Co., AL at the same time. Eva Howell and Walter Rayburn married sometime after 1900. I have more information on the Rayburn's, Howell's and McClain's. I can't help but feel that the Howell name came from these folks. It will be interesting to compare and see what we find. Do you have any Rayburns in your line that might connect to the Howell's? Let me know. I will be waiting to hear from you. MY wifes great grandfather was a Howell and some of the family was in the area at one time and also my wifes grandfather (David William Howell) lived in Hardin County, Tennessee, after the war. I think some of my wifes McKelvey family is at the Waites Cemetery. Any chance there was a connection ? 1. Re: [TNHARDIN] Waites Cemetery in Hardin Co., TN
    2. Hello Charlotte: After today, I most likely will not be online for a while. I know of no connection to the Rayburns or McClain families. My wife's HOWELL line was in west Lauderdale County, Alabama and in Hardin County, Tennessee after the war. Her great grandfather David William Wilson Howell ( son of Phillip Howell and Mary Wesson) married Sarah Margaret Williams in LCA. After the war I find that she died and is buried near Savannah, Tn. He then marrried Sarah Columbia Palmer Graham, the widow of James Graham. D.W. Howell and Sarah Palmer are the great grandparents of my wife. Both, later moved back to Florence, LCA and are buried at the Florence City Cemetery. A brother of D.W. Howell, Benjamin E. Howell married Sarah Witherspoon of the Waterloo, Alabama James Witherspoon family. I find records of them in Hardin County but I don't think they are shown on the Hardin County, Tn census. Sarah was buried about 1876 at the Witherspoon Cemetery at Waterloo, Alabama and removed to the Richardson Cemetery nearby after TVA flooded some of the land about 1938. I have never found any information on where Benjamin E. Howell , her husband was buried, about 1877. Also, near Waterloo, Alabama was a sister Caroline ( Callie) Howell. She married Carroll Sharp. A brother Lee Howell worked as a young man in the store of Major Witherspoon and later was a riverboat captain before moving to Evansville, Indiana and working with the railroads there. Howell, Indiana, just west of Evansville is named for him. His biography is on the Lauderdale County Web Page. Thanks for any help.
