    3. I have located additional material on your Davis family. It appears that they were somehow related to the Stegall family also of Alabama. If anyone can assist, I am looking for the birthplace of John M. Davis, b. 1833 AL and William Stegall, b. 1829 AL. They were both enumerated in the 1860 census of McNairy Co., TN. Through the years, John M. Davis lived in both Hardin and McNairy County. David

    3. Hi. John M. (Marion) Davis was b. ca 1832 in Lauderdale Co. AL ( I can't find the documentation on why we say Lauderdale Co. Maybe we just guessed based on census records) d. 1910 - 1920 and is buried at Sweeny Cemetery. He married Winnie Hughes 1852-1881 (She was the youngest daughter of William C. and Winnie). John M. was the brother of Susan A. Hughes, who was the second wife of William C. Hughes, therefore he was both son in law and brother in law to WC Hughes. According to the Veteran's census he was a private in Company E of the 10th Tennessee Infantry. He and Winnie had 4 daughters, Sarah, Mary Susan, M.R. & Winnie C. and one son, William G. I'm thinking that Judy Flatt will have more on that family. She certainly knew some of the grandchildren. His parents were Gabriel Davis 1806 SC - 17 Nov 1850 in Limestone Co. and Mary McLemore 1808 TN - aft 1860. We do not yet have the Davis family back beyond Gabriel, but the western region of SC looks like a likely point to examine. I have been told that Gabe died in a fire that nearly consumed a small town in Limestone Co. There is some suggestion that he was drunk and started it. Mary Mclemore's line we have back to Jamestown. Mary Stegall married Briggs McLemore. They must have lived in McNairy Co. for a while because their son, John William was b. there 16 May 1857. Briggs and Maclin Bascom McLemore were brothers of Burrell McLemore, Jr. Burrell was the father of Mary McLemore. That makes them great uncles to John M. and Susan Davis. The area we are talking about is where the Hardin Co. line juts westward just above Adamsville, so it would be reasonable for them to live in both jurisdictions at various times. I am interested in knowing about which and where your family connects. Kathy Dell David Cagle wrote: > I have located additional material on your Davis family.
