Cherrie, William M. Alexander was the son of Josiah Alexander and the grandson of Ezekiel Alexander who came to this area from Mecklenburg Co., NC before 1830. Ezekiel owned the tract of land where Harmony Church and Cemetery are located. Alexander descendants still own much of Ezekiel's original tract. William's wife Ellen was the daughter of Stephen and Jane Gilbert. The 1860 census shows this family as follows: 1609 Stephen Gilbert 47 NC 14th C. D. *Marian 46 KY Mary 19 NC Elizabeth 18 NC Edna 17 NC Ellen 15 NC Cresa 13 MS John 11 TN Joseph 8 TN Susannah 6 TN Samantha 3 TN Margaret Sanders 18 AL William Sanders 15 AL * The 1850 census shows the wife of Stephen Gilbert to be Jane, b. 1812 in NC. It is likely that Stephen remarried before 1860 and the children shown at the bottom in the 1860 list are probably children belonging to Mariah by a prior marriage? (see next paragraph) The 1850 census also shows Maria Sanders, 35 KY living in the household of Jesse Mitchell 58:NC, and wife, Mary 58 NC.
