    3. I probably won't join the Hardin County Historical Society, and probably should refrain from putting in my two cents, BUT ALL of the historical societies and surname societies I belong to are running $20. That seems to be the current rate.... The only one I belong to that is $6, publishes a six page newsletter sporadically as opposed to the two 100+ page, excellently researched journals I receive from the Neville Heritage Society at $20/yr. Even my quilt guild is $25/year. And these lists cost the owner $24/year. They are not really free. We get to swap information here because someone else was generous enough to put up the money for it. Add to that the $21/month most of us pay for unlimited access... Consider, too, that most non profit groups must also rent a place for their meetings.... postage and printing are constantly rising prices. It all adds up rather quickly. I know as well as any one else that genealogy is an expensive hobby. I've been doing it for 20+ years on a shoe string budget, I'm not retired yet, I work and still have young children at home. So I'm painfully aware that I'm lucky to get two sacks of groceries for $20, and everytime I do I think, shucks, that's another genealogy society I could have joined!! Cousin, the York Co. SC Gen and Hist Society, home of our Pettus clan, is also running $20/year, but it is a high quality publication and worth it. I wonder how any society is managing on $10/year unless they don't have meetings. Kathy Duncan
