The only William H. Elliott listed in "Tennesseans in the Civil War" was a private in "C" Co., 59th Tennessee Mounted Infantry Regiment. This unit was organized in May of 1862, captured at Vicksburg Mississippi in July of 1863. Served in East Tennessee and Western Virginia thereafter. James Brooks and Jacob M. Hays were Captains of "C" Company which was Mustered in at Elizabethton, Carter County Tennessee on December 23, 1861. Thats a long way from Hardin County? There were 4 William Elliotts without middle names or initials from Tennessee in the late War. William Elliott - Pvt. K Co., 44th Con. Inf. A middle Tennessee Unit Pvt. McClung's L-Arty. Co. Organized in Knoxville, was a Vicksburg in 1862 Pvt. D Co., 11th Inf. Also from middle Tennessee Pvt. Crew's Inf. Most likely your outfit Crew's Tennessee Infantry Battalion was organized in Savannah in January 1862. There was no mention of this outfit being in Vicksburg. In 1860, William Elliott, age 18 TN and Mary Elliott, age 16 TN were living with Geroge Allen 25 TN and the Allen family. George was a photographer. G. B. Elliott 14 TN, lived next door with Thomas E. Nevill 41 TN, and the Nevill family. The 1850 Census of Hardin County the Elliott family to be as follows: 49-49 William Elliott 36 NC 6th C. D. Sarah C. 27 NC Wm. H. H. 8 TN James T. 6 TN Greenbury P. 3 TN Charles J 2 TN Martha A. 1/12 TN William died before 7 November 1853. T. W. Poindexter was appointed administrator of the estate.
