    3. Hi; In Goodspeed's History of Hardin Co., TN It says that in 1830,John White and Elisha Bryant, started a Ferry and business at Cerro Gordo. Cerro Gordo was called White's Landing until 1840 when it's name was changed. I believe that Cerro Gordo was/is close to Saltillo. Hope this helps. Char

    3. David I have found a little bit more information and the name was David Allen Shaw. John Edward Hudson born in 1960. It was his great grandfather on his mother's side, David Allen Shaw. I looked at the Pictorical History of Hardin County and it didn't say anything about this family. hah ----- Original Message ----- From: "David Cagle" <dcagle1@charter.net> To: <tnhardin@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, July 30, 2007 8:13 PM Subject: Re: [TNHARDIN] Ferry Operator at Saltillo > Henry, > I have never known a John White that operated the ferry there. 3. Henry, I have never known a John White that operated the ferry there. That doesn't mean it isn't so, just before my time I guess. Give me a time frame and I will ask around. We have not had a ferry there for about 10 years now. It never was efficient after we got bridges across the river here in Hardin County, but was handy sometimes. Part of that land that went to Wayne Co. also was located in District 8, Range 12, Section 1. John Watson's land was in District 8, Range 12, Section 1, the part that remained in Hardin Co. 3. I also have a Hardin County, TN Davis line that I have tried to tack down for several years with no results. Maybe this will ring a bell with someone. The 1850 Hardin County census lists Jane (ca 1830 TN), John M (ca 1834 TN) and James W Davis (ca 1836 TN) living in the household of William Burris. (indexed as Bunis) in District 2. William Burris married Catherine Davis in Lawrence County on November 19, 1835. I believe Catherine had another daughter, Hannah (ca 1825 TN), who married Henry C Kemp. Catherine (maiden name unknown) Davis Burris also had three children by her marriage to William Burris. I have tracked all of William's children by his fiirst marriage to Elizabeth Bailey and I have tracked William and Catherine's children, but I no confirmed information on Catherine's children by her first marriage or the name of her first husband. If anyone has information on this family, I would appreciate your help. Jennie Burris Little

    3. Gil, I have some ties to the Joseph Davis family of Hardin Creek. Uncle Henry Overton Cagle, 1842-1899, married Isabella Frances "Fanny" Davis ca 1868. He went to AR with his first cousin's widow and left Fanny holding the bag, so to speak. That's a good story. Your excuse is ok for missing the meeting, see you next time. David ----- Original Message ----- From: Orville Gilchrist To: David Cagle Sent: Tuesday, July 24, 2007 11:36 PM Subject: Allen Davis of Hardin cty Hi Friend. Are you by chance related to the Allen Davis family that lived at Olive Hill area? His daughter married Stanley Todd who was wifes Grandmother through their daughter Grace Todd who married Robert White. In 1917 Stanley bought a farm at Box Elder ,just up the hill from Beason Creek off Coffee landing road. He had a 400 acre Farm and later a sawmill during WWII. Suprise: It was the very same spot that my GGgfather John Gilchrist settled on in the 1830's with his second wife and two daughters. He was a slave owner and Hardin Cty Commissioner before he died in 1852. His Will is on file in loose wills in Ct House. In 1947 this 17 year old kid drove ole dads car to the same place and picked up a little blond headed gal for a first date.Been married to her for 57 yrs and counting. We learned this suprise when we were looking at records in the Registars office in Savannah a few years ago while doing King White research and found land grants to ole John that matched the calls of the Todd place....Suprise Cheers , Gil Sorry we missed the His Soc meeting last, but had a very important Quinco board Mtg I couldn't miss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ No virus found in this incoming message. 3. Hi. John M. (Marion) Davis was b. ca 1832 in Lauderdale Co. AL ( I can't find the documentation on why we say Lauderdale Co. Maybe we just guessed based on census records) d. 1910 - 1920 and is buried at Sweeny Cemetery. He married Winnie Hughes 1852-1881 (She was the youngest daughter of William C. and Winnie). John M. was the brother of Susan A. Hughes, who was the second wife of William C. Hughes, therefore he was both son in law and brother in law to WC Hughes. According to the Veteran's census he was a private in Company E of the 10th Tennessee Infantry. He and Winnie had 4 daughters, Sarah, Mary Susan, M.R. & Winnie C. and one son, William G. I'm thinking that Judy Flatt will have more on that family. She certainly knew some of the grandchildren. His parents were Gabriel Davis 1806 SC - 17 Nov 1850 in Limestone Co. and Mary McLemore 1808 TN - aft 1860. We do not yet have the Davis family back beyond Gabriel, but the western region of SC looks like a likely point to examine. I have been told that Gabe died in a fire that nearly consumed a small town in Limestone Co. There is some suggestion that he was drunk and started it. Mary Mclemore's line we have back to Jamestown. Mary Stegall married Briggs McLemore. They must have lived in McNairy Co. for a while because their son, John William was b. there 16 May 1857. Briggs and Maclin Bascom McLemore were brothers of Burrell McLemore, Jr. Burrell was the father of Mary McLemore. That makes them great uncles to John M. and Susan Davis. The area we are talking about is where the Hardin Co. line juts westward just above Adamsville, so it would be reasonable for them to live in both jurisdictions at various times. I am interested in knowing about which and where your family connects. Kathy Dell David Cagle wrote: > I have located additional material on your Davis family. If Papa Loyd Alexander was around he would know all this. Just glad we have all the info you have attained of people and places. Lot have burnt. Wish there was a map of of Hardin Co with names of earliest settlers and where they were located. Thanks. Nedra Alexander
