These communications really help. I got a call yesterday from a resident in Germantown, Shelby County, Tennessee about the Van Hoose family. First, Jobe Stanfill Clayton was married a second time to Sarah Ingram, and they had no children. Second, I'm not familiar with a Mildred Clayton, Unless it is Mildred Ernestine Clayton born in 1934. Jobe Stanfill Clayton was the youngest of 7 children born in Lawrence County, Tennessee. His mother Nancy Blackard was the second of two wives that married John William (Flat River) Clayton of Person County, North Carolina. Flat River's first wife was Rachel Crews and they had 8 children. It could be that Mildred stems from that line, but I don't have her. By the way, the name Flat River comes from the Flat River Primitive Baptist Church. John William donated a couple acres to the church when it was established in the 1790's. The church still stands today on Flat River road and Blackard road, about 3 miles south of Roxboro, in Person County, North Carolina. Yes, Jasper Henry Clayton was my grandfather. Jap as he was called in Tennessee, was the youngest of 8 children. Jap first married Irena Jenora Presley, daughter of Parker Smith Presley. The had 6 children. the oldest was Mary who died as an infant and is buried at Andersen Cemetery along with Jobe's first wife, Rachel Jackson Curtis. Second child was Eula who married Richard Donaho. Third was Bishop who married Jewell Fletcher. Fourth was John Thomas who married Mealy Orman. By the way John Thomas died last October at the age of 99. Fifth was Jeanie Elizabeth and she married Calton Crady and last was a son who died as a infant in 1912 before Irena died in 1913. In 1914, Jasper married a widow, Melissa Almerrean (Reddin) Hanna. Almerrean was first married to William Albert Hanna and they had 6 children and he died around 1910. He is suppose to be buried at Lebanon Cemetery, but I don't think the grave is marked. I haven't found it. In 1919, Jasper Henry and Almerrean decided to go to Texas. It depends on who you listen to, but one family says Jap followed his brother in law, John Presley to Texas. The other family says Almerrean followed her brother Grover Cleveland Reddin to Texas. Grover Cleveland went to Texas working for James Thomas Orr. There are a bunch of Orr's from Hardin County, Tennessee On Christmas day, Marvin Reddin took Jap and Almerrean, along with 9 children to Lexington to catch a train. The oldest Hanna son was in the Army. They changed trains at Memphis and Houston, Texas and arrived at Sweeny, Brazoria County, Texas. My mother Zelma Olene Clayton was born on 29 June 1920 after they arrived in Sweeny. I might mention that about half of the population of Sweeny, Texas in 1920 was from Western Tennessee. The other half was from Middle Tennessee. This might help you understand why I'm searching so many different surnames. Former Hardin County residents in Sweeny, Texas married former Hardin County residents after they arrived in Sweeny, Texas. I thought I would try and break the mold, so instead of marrying a cousin in Sweeny, I married a girl who's mother was from Missouri. My mother didn't marry a former Hardin County resident either, but two of my father's sisters did. One married a Mackey Horrel Hanna and the other married a William Dee Sanford and his mother was Mary Edith White. About Roger's questions about the Van Hoose family, I learned from Drexel Hendon, yesterday, that Ike Van Hoose is truly Isaac A. Van Hoose. His wife was Mentie Carson. Isaac N. Van Hoose was married to Frances Elizabeth Crotts. Isaac A. Van Hoose is the son of Mark Van Hoose and Isaac N. Van Hoose was the son of Jacob Van Hoose. Also Isaac Newton Van Hoose is the son of Isaac N. Van Hoose and Isaac Newton was married to Martha Austin. I have not be able to find out where J.L. and J.A. Van Hoose fit in. Now are you really confused.
This is mainly directed towards Henry Hanson, but thought I would put it out for others to either benifit from or help with. I followed your last post to the Hardin Co list and it twisted around and came up with the same thing that I have (not that it is entirely right but it agrees with everything that you said). However, I have a few questions that maybe you can help me with. I don't know that much about Jobe/Job but I am taking it that Sarah J Ingram was his second wife and that they didn't have any children. Can you confirm that? Also regarding Ike VanHoose, I was somewhat speculating that "Ike" was actually Issac A VanHoose and that he is the father of the 8 children that David Cagle listed in his post however, I am a little uncertain about his wife/wives. Can you help me with that? David's post which looks like it might have been from census data indicated that he married Elizabeth Crotts on 7JUN1877, yet James L VanHoose (1893-1909) and JA VanHoose's (1900-1918) parents are specified as IA & RP VanHoose on their headstones, and "Ike's wife that is buried next to him at Shady Grove is "Mentie". Can you help me sort out if he had more than one (possibly three) wife/wives and which of the children would have belonged with each of them? I may have things messed up somehow but hope to get them straight. Also, a related Clayton question.... Do you know who the parents of Mildred Clayton (1919-1988) were? She was the wife of Jettie Robbins. That may be an easy question, but I just haven't come across the right person yet that knew. Also, Henry, if I followed your information correctly, your Grandfather was Jasper Henry Clayton. I have what is probably a complete list of his children, but would like to add more on their spouses and children if you have it. Thanks, Roger Gant Saltillo, TN
Hope you all don't mind another Russell descendant coming into the conversation. I'll post documentation regarding Robert, Alexander and the rest of the families ties back to Guilford Co. NC. Robert Russell (Sr.) married Delilah Reeves married 7-28-1777 in Guilford, N.C. Delilah was the daughter of James Reeves and wife Millicent. James Reeves parents were: William Reeves b. 1690 m. Margaret Burgess d. 1751 Granville,N.C. James Reeves and Millicent were parents of the following children: Malachi d. bef 1784 m. Fortune Burton d/o Richard Burton (Malachi & Fortune's children: Richard, Thomas, Martha, Jesse, William, Jonathan, Mary, Zella, Malachi & Thomas) Jeremiah m. Jane Brazile William m. Fortune Rhodes d. 1821 Madison, Ky. Elizabeth m. Holmes Judith m. Simon Moon DELILAH m. ROBERT RUSSELL Rhoda m. Parker Robert Russell that married Delilah Reeves was the son of William Russell Sr. of Guilford Co. NC who wrote in his will the following: "to my eldest son Robert, land east of Still House Branch whereon he lives to be his full part of my estate, remainder divided between William, John, David, James and Alexander". When David & Alexander sold the land willed to them by William Sr. it was by their brother Robert (10-10-1795). Still Branch. When John of Lee, Va. sold his land to James Russell (land that was grant to William Sr. 1784) it began at Robert Russell's corner mouth of Still Branch. When William Jr. sold his land that was his father's it was by David Russell's NE corner by William Jr's own line Gowdy's corner. When OUR Robert Russell died the sheriff seized part of his land and the description was as follows: Beginning Robert Russell's own survey runs west his own line to William Russell's corner west to William Gowdy's corner north on his own line to his corner west on his line east to first station and 17 acres laid off as widow's dower. Then when William Case bidded on the 131 acres it was beginning at Thomas Bath's corner east, north, north, west to William Gowdy's, south to Gowdy's corner, Still Branch, Potters Branch property late of William Russell dec'd. 1790 Guilford-Salisbury District 1-3-3 Died before 2-1-1798 Judgement against Estate of Robert Russell. Sum to satisfy. No goods or chattels. 263 acres by William Russell's corner. 17 acres of above laid off to his widow's part of her dower. Public sale to highest bidder. (Samuel Maxwell) OUR Robert Russell was the son of William Russell, Sr. The Robert Russell that married Susannah must have been a brother of William Russell, Sr. In his will he left money to **Robert & Alexander sons of Robert Russell dec'd. Also John Donaldson. Then to William his brother William's son and Thomas & Robert Washington Russell sons of his brother David. **This is one source for Robert and Alexander Russell later of Hardin Co. TN. Robert Russell Sr., husband of Delilah and father to the boys, died suddenly in Guilford Co. NC prior to 1800. At that time he had just made several land purchases in another NC County and apparently his money was caught up in this land purchase. The Sheriff took all but a few acres of the land in Guilford Co. to pay for the lands and estate. Then a couple of years later, James R. Russell repurchased these lands and in 1804 James and mother Delilah Russell sold this land. We have found a 1800 marriage for James R. Russell and Darius Burton in Guilford Co. However, it's our belief that she died before they arrived in Hardin Co. That James R. Russell most probably brought his mother Delilah to Hardin Co. and it appears that Delilah is in the 1830 Census for Hardin residing with Robert Russell and family, Delilah then being between 70 and 80 years of age. Then in 1835 Delilah died and Alexander Russell was the administrator of her will. 1800 Guilford Co. She was born 1774-1784. James Russell was bond on Campbell & Margaret's marriage. Delilah and son James R. Russell sold lands in Guilford Co. 1804. (see below) James R. Russell married Dareus Burton April 2, 1800 Guilford Co. and Darius died enroute to Hardin Co. as verified by her descendant in 2003. P. 205 JAMES R. Then James & Delilah sold it. So he is the son of Robert & Delilah. Then this is the James Russell who came into Hardin Co. 1825 and he and Alexander purchased the lands. James deed was dated Dec. 25, 1825. Several Russells and their families moved to AR between 1853-54 following the death of Robert Russell of Hardin Co. This included John and America Russell Jackson, Robertson and Judith Russell Winchester, William and Elizabeth Russell Henry, Robert R. and Mary Ann Russell, a John Russell family and also some of the Reeves and Tucker families. I've many Russell documents and will be happy to share. I am the great granddaughter of Elizabeth Francis Russell who married William A. Henry 1831 Hardin Co. TN. Hi Jane, Unfortunately no new discoveries. The Alexander Russell brick wall is very much intact. I have been considering participation in the Russell DNA Project: http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/r/russell/index.html Has anyone else associated with the Hardin County Russell's done this ? I am a descendant of the Russell family through Alexander and Elizabeth's daughter, Margaret, who married James L. Watson. The Russell family is the most confusing family I have worked with I think, and there is a great number of us Russell descendants. David, is that really you? I haven't seen or heard from you in several years. I take it their have been no new discoveries. Jane Watson Ellis A self-appointed family historian and proud of it. You can check out my family's history at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hookersbend/ From: "D. Russell" <drussell36@tx.rr.com> Reply-To: tnhardin@rootsweb.com To: <tnhardin@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [TNHARDIN] Russells Date: Wed, 1 Aug 2007 09:24:00 -0500 David, We have communicated before, but I thought I would re-post for others that are interested in the Russell's of Hardin County, especially the 2nd civil district. Below is what I have as far as my Russell line: 1.ALEXANDER RUSSELL b.Jan.15,1791, North Carolina. d.Jan.3,1863, Hardin Co. TN. + ELIZABETH (WALLACE ?)b.Oct.2,1779. d.Jan.22,1869,Hardin.Co, TN 2.MARGARET RUSSELL b.1815. d.1897, Hardin Co. TN + JAMES L. WATSON b.1814. d.1893, Hardin Co. TN married 1835 2.JOHN RUSSELL b.Mar.3,1817, Wayne Co. TN. d.1907,Hardin Co. TN + CATHERINE POOL b.Feb.18,1820. d.Mar.6,1903,Hardin Co. 2.ROBERT RUSSELL b.Oct.17,1823,Hardin Co. d.Mar.17,1907,Hardin Co. +MARY O. SHELBY b.Oct12,1827. d.Mar.20,1896 3.WILLIAM A. RUSSELL b.1851 d.1881 3.ELI RUSSELL b.1853 d.1936 3.JOHN LEWIS RUSSELL b.1855 d.1943 3.LAURAH RUSSELL b.1858 d.1953 3.JAMES JEFFERSON RUSSELL b.1864 3.MARGARET RUSSELL b.1861 d.1888 3.TOM RUSSELL b.1867 d.1956 3.ANDREW HOLT RUSSELL b.1870 d.1931 3.ALBERT RUSSELL b.1870 d.1943 3.MARY E. RUSSELL b.1872 d.1878 Andrew Holt Russell is my grandfather. He moved to Erath County, Texas around 1904. His twin, Albert, and brother Eli were also in Texas. I have been trying for years to trace the generations before Alexander. All I know is that he was born in North Carolina and was in the Hardin Co area very early on, in the 1820's. Based on the census figures I know Alexander and Elizabeth had more than the three children listed, but I haven't found them yet. Any additional information would be greatly appreciated. PS... Hello cousin Betty Thompson, I haven't spoken with you since the Tennessee reunion in the early 90's !! David, We have communicated before, but I thought I would re-post for others that are interested in the Russell's of Hardin County, especially the 2nd civil district. Has anyone seen the name Ricketts associated with Hardin County TN pictorial book or otherwise? Abraham Ricketts and his cousin Ebenezer Lee both lived in Hardin County around 1884-85, in the Scotts Hill area I believe. Bettye, Thank you for your suggestion. I will keep Tyler in mind. I know that many of my relatives and one of my ancestors moved to Hardin County and hope that there is still someone there who can help. I want to thank Roger Gant and Janice Alexander Anderson for helping me with information about Maud Bingham and Sidney Vanhoose. Their daughter Marie married Earl Dee Montgomery and they lived in Decatur County. Maud was the daughter of my grandfather's older sister. They were children of Jobe Stanfill Clayton. This information helped me understand that Sidney Vanhoose's older brother Bartley Carroll Vanhoose married Ida McKinley Alexander, who's mother was Martha Angeline Clayton. Martha Angeline Clayton's father , William Clayton Jr., was a half brother to Jobe Stanfill Clayton. William and Jobe had the same father, John William "Flat River" Clayton, but William Jr. mother was Rachel Crews and Jobe's mother was Nancy Blackard. The pieces of the puzzle fit. It sometime takes a couple people to put the puzzle together. Thanks to Orville Gilchrist and his wife Carolyn and Jim & Charlotte for information about John White, that has helped me find a link to my neighbor Betty, here in College Station, Texas that is from the Russell family in Hardin County, Tennessee. That now makes four of us, here in the same town, in the same Genealogical Society, that have ties to each other and Lawrence County and Hardin County, Tennessee. Thank you Tennessee Volunteers
Hi Bob, I've not ran across any from Hardin County. Do you have any from southern Indiana i.e; Gibson, Posey, Pike, Warrick, Vanderburgh? My grandmother's maiden name was Ricketts; married a Wade. Terry Winchester Evansville, Indiana Bob Ricketts <rericketts3@mchsi.com> wrote: Has anyone seen the name Ricketts associated with Hardin County TN pictorial book or otherwise? Abraham Ricketts and his cousin Ebenezer Lee both lived in Hardin County around 1884-85, in the Scotts Hill area I believe. Charlotte, You are correct, but John White died in 1845 and was buried on top of the ridge at Cerro Gordo. At least for the past 100 years, there has not been a ferry at Cerro Gordo. On the other hand, there has been a ferry most of my life time at Saltillo until just a few years ago. Cerro Gordo and Saltillo were both named for battles in the war with Mexico and are about 5 miles apart. I'm looking for parents and siblings of John Walker Shelby b 1865 Hardin Co., TN d 1912 Craighead Co., AR, and his wife, Elizabeth M. White (b 1867 d 1958). Elizabeth is believed to be the d/o James and Martha A. Holland White. After John Shelby's death in 1912 Elizabeth married T. P. Cox. Their son, James Bert Shelby (b 1900 Sadris, TN d 1986 Craighead Co., AR) is the grandfather of a friend. I'm helping him trace his ancestry in Hardin Co., TN. Any help with this family would be appreciated. Hi; In Goodspeed's History of Hardin Co., TN It says that in 1830,John White and Elisha Bryant, started a Ferry and business at Cerro Gordo. Cerro Gordo was called White's Landing until 1840 when it's name was changed. I believe that Cerro Gordo was/is close to Saltillo. Hope this helps. Char
