    3. It now appears that my ancestor William Riley McMahan was related to the other McMahans in Hardin County. Apparently James F. McMahan Sr. was his grandfather. David Cagle and Jane Ellis have shared all the information they could find in public records on McMahans in Hardin County, but I am hoping to find anyone with a family tree that includes James F.'s descendants. Does anyone have anything on John D. McMahan, believed to be the father of William Riley. I am also interested in John W.McMahan, a full or half brother to William R. Both John D. and John W. owned land in Calloway County, KY in the late 1840's but John's siblings seem to be in Hardin County in the 1830's. I have been trying to contact Tom Courtney about John D.'s sister who married a Coatney or Courtney but my email bounced back. I have also been in contact with Jane Ellis about the McMahan/Watson connection and hope to find anyone with any information to share. John W. was married to a Rachel Watson in Kentucky in 1843. There is to be a reunion of the descendants of William Riley in Portageville, MO on the 25th of August and I would love to have more information to share with others by that date. I will see if I can come up with something on your Ross question--I have some Ross kin but on my mom's side not Bingham side and these Rosses seem to all be in Henderson and Decatur counties. 1. [TNHARDIN] Williamson House on Old Stage Road
    2. Jim and Charlotte
    3. Hi List; I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the Old Williamson House. It was located on the "Old Stage Road" on the way to or between Purdy, I believe. It was said to have been built by the Adams family that Adamsville in McNairy Co., was named after. They are related to my Hopper and Williamson families. My Williamson relation owned it later on and I would like to find out more about the house and the Williamsons who lived there and ran it. I have a picture and a small article about it. It says that it served as a stopping place for travelers on the old stage road. It was supposed to be a big house. I have been told that my gr, gr, gr, gr uncle John Bell Williamson was the last to live there and that it burned. I would appreciate any information about it and the Williamson family. Or if anyone could tell me how to get information about it I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much. Charlotte Christensen.

    2. My thanks to Henry and Carolyn for their responses..... it seems to me that Archibald WEST and family were in Wayne County, KY in the 1820's. But they passed thru TN on their way to IN. So was that a trip back home for Elizabeth after she was married in Wayne Cty to Archibald? So why not just get married in TN? Why is she in Wayne Cty? Why is she listed as Betsy Denny (or Downey) - a previous marriage? And why is John Caldwell her surety? Where was her own father?????? If only her father had signed the marriage certificate!!! She comes to IN along with Alexander Worley and his wife Sally (Downey) - could Eliz. be the widow of Sally's relative? Help !!! :-) Thanks for any clues anyone can give. Again - Eliz. WORLEY b. 1802 or 1805 KY or TN...... janet

    2. I show the Worleys originally were of Botetourt Co. VA. If you have the same documentation please let me know as I'm researching several Hardin TN families originally of Botetourt Co. Jim Worley exchanged information with me back in 2002. I'm pasting the e-mail address I had for him back then as JWorley498@aol.com If you are unsuccessful at reaching Jim then please let me know. Robert Russell died in 1850 Hardin Co. TN. There were 27 heirs to his estate. Alexander Russell (his brother) and Michael Worley were first designated as his Executors. Court Record dated 3 June 1850 they renounced Executorship of Robert Russell's estate. July 1, 1850 Will of Robert Russell presented in open court and the Executorship being renounced by Michael Worley and Alexander Russell . The ? is contedted by Robert R. Russell and Robertson Winchester who having entered the bond with the security at law required it is ordered by the court that the clerk be required to make a transcript of the proceeding of this court in this cause. The rest is hard to read but ended with there would be a trial. March 3, 1851 - " James W. Cantrell appointed guardian for Anna Worley, Stephen S. Worley, and Elizabeth Worley, minor orphans," p86 of County Court Minutes Book F 1850-56 (p80 of "Hardin County Tennessee Records 1826-1860," Thomas A. Hays, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley, SC, 1985). May 5, 1851 - "guardian report by James Cantrell, guardian of the minor heirs of John Worley" (Hardin County Court Minutes Book F 1850-56). March 3, 1856 - "William Russell appointed guardian for Stephen Worley, a minor," p515 of Hardin County Court Minutes Book F 1850-56(p105 of "Hardin County Tennessee Records 1826-1860," Thomas A. Hays, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley, SC, 1985). October 4, 1858 - "final settlement made with William Russell, guardian of Stephen Worley, Hardin County Court Minutes Book G (p112 of "Hardin County Tennessee Records 1826-1860," Thomas A. Hays, Southern Historical Press, Inc., Easley, SC, 1985). These are notes from my files when attempting to see the relationship of the Worleys to the Russells: In the Hardin Co. TN 1850 Census, Michael Worley was 56 years of age and born in VA. His wife Lavina was was 37 b. in NC. All of his children with him were born TN. the oldest was 18. Michael was on the 1830 Hardin (Yardin) Co., TN. as well as his father George Worley. Also on the 1830 were Abraham (brother), John (brother). John showed as Sr. and Jr. George Worley was born 1760 in Va. and he married Elizabeth ?. Their children: John b. 1790-1800 Va. d. 1845, Michael b. 1794 Va. d. aft 1860, Abraham b. 1800 Va. m. Lewis Crotts (they too are on the 1850 Hardin), Eliza b. 1813 m. ? Crotts (the reason her husband is unknown is apparently he died and she was living with Isaac Worley 1850 showing "idiotic") The son of Isaac and Matilda...George E. Worley is buried at Pyburn's in Hardin Co. Michael and Lavina's son John V.A. Worley is buried at Worley Cemetery in Crump, Tn. (this is where my brother lives and this is McNairy Co.). One more...Rebecca C. Worley was living with Pinckney G. Nichols and Lucinda M. his wife on the 1850 Hardin. Next door was Robert R. Russell. Now in reading this info on the Worley's it is said that some of the grandchildren of George Worley were born in N.C. I didn't find that on the 1850 census in Hardin. All children showed born in TN. The Worley's were in VA. moved to KY. possibly moved to N.C. but definitely ended up in Hardin Co., TN by 1830 Census or before. The oldest child was Abraham's and that one was 23 born in TN. (1827). Three of George Worley's children married Crotts. Lewis Crotts was 41 on the 1850 Hardin Census born TN. There was also a Valentine Crotts 44 born in N.C. That would put him in N.C. about 1816. He went to Marietta Church and had a small farm on Gallaher Ferry Road off Hickory Creek. His people owned Clark Park in Oak Ridge called Freels Bend about 1750, 1000 acres, and ancestor Hendrix (thought to br a Tory) had 4000 acres including Solway in 1800. Ancestor Scott of Morgan Co. with 4000 acres and four farms (1790) married into Freels family. Will have 300-500 Freels attending Reunion at Frozen Head Park near Petros Prison in two weeks. If you are a Freels..I have pdf of Five Generations of Freels by Linda Hallman also of the Scott family. Two Hall cabins, and Freels cabins still stand. One at Freels Bend and one at Bull Run Steam Plant and one in Morgan County. These families founded Morgan County circa 1806 and that's where the Scott family married in.... This Scott was brother to or first cousin to General winfred Scott. I belong to the Scott Clan and their reunion in Wartburg each year has about 30 attending. However the web address seems to be blank and the owner has died...go to Dixie Rose for latest contact.----- If you have been out of contact...Hardin Valley now has new middle and new high school and over 1000 new homes built in the last two years. Property in Solway and Hardin Valley now at $50,000 per acre with no view of River. About 25 new businesses in strip malls now exist at exit with Pellissippi Parkway where Pellissippi State now stands. Intermarriages with the families above means that by 1850 These families (and the Hickeys, etc,.) owned approx. one half of Knox County which is 508 square miles. Living proof is cousin Thelma Hickey, age 94,,,, still living on her g- grandfather's land in Karns. She is also a Scott and related to everyone of these families. Your roots run Deep.
