    2. Hi Margie! It was very nice to hear from you.? Let's see if our records add up - I have a John I. Owen, son of John D. Owen (whom I assume is known as Daniel in most of the records)... This John I. Owen(s) sounds like your John R. Owens.? I have him married to a Hellen (which could be your Ellen). The children I have for them are: Flora G., John W., Hatti M., Polly C., Alley, and Lola.? Now, their last name was spelt Oen on the census I think.? I have them listed in Hardin Co TN 1900 census, dist 8.? John I was born Sept 1864. Please verify if this is the same family we are talking about.? I would be so glad to know the real story about the Owen family in Hardin Co.? Mabye we can figure some of these branches out! 2. Hi Mr. Adams, Yes, we have corresponded in the past, I used to live in North Carolina, moved from there in 1996.? My family history research has been hit or miss since then.? I am at a point where I need to get this in order & transfer it to a medium where I can share it with others easily.? FYI, I am descended from two of William Hill's children, who you have listed (W. B. Hill on some census records), so if you would like this info for your webpage, I would be glad to provide it.? I re-visited it lately, someone was kind enough to send the link through this Hardin exchange, and I verified that I did indeed have that info correct so far. I am excited to reconnect with everyone! 2. David, Deborah, etc. The Daniel Owen referred to in your recent emails is an ancestor of mine. It appears the census taker (?) in 1850 added an s onto the Owen name. Later, some of the family kept the S but most did not. Daniel and Nancy Owen were the parents of John R. Owen, b. 1851, m. Ellen Alexander. John R. and Ellen were the parents of Laura Ida Owen, my grandmother, who married William Chesley Alexander. Laura and Chesley were the parents of my Mother, Nona Beryleen (Alexander), m. 2. David Cagle
    3. Deborah, I don't have much on these families and I am not sure if this Owens family is who you are looking for. I am aware of some of the stuff you wrote. Mrs. Sloan was the librarian at Central High School about 50 years ago when I was there. Jim Hopper filled me in on some of this family material as I ate lunch with him most week days for the past 20 years. David Here is some information on Daniel Smith and Alex. Sloan: Alexander Sloan, Sr. appeared to have settled near what is now Clifton, TN. He was married to Ruthy Unknown. Alexander Sloan died abt. 1825. He is found in Hardin Co. as early as the 1820 census but is not in the home on the 1830 census. Ruthy became the head of the household in 1830. Ruthy died in Hardin Co. prior to 1860 as there is a court record of the estate settlement among the heirs. The court record shows Alexander Sloan, Jr. vs. Daniel Smith and wife Clara; Alfred Kirby and wife Zabby; William Hill and wife Nancy; William Sloan; Simpson Sloan; Bullard Sloan and wife Dorinda; Willaim Hogan; Marian Hogan; John Hogan; Elizabeth Hogan and Alexander Hogan. (Hogan's may be grand children) Alexander II was asking for Ruthy Sloan's land for keeping and support of Ruthy; however, the court ordered that the land be sold at public action and the money divided. Property was in Range 6 Section 5 on the TN. River. Property was sold to Daniel Smith as the highest bidder on 6/4/1860 for $400. Plesant Smith and James Adams signed a two year note with him. Ruth Sloan died in Hardin Co. TN.(Page 273) $474. ($67.71) to be divided between seven (7) heirs. Clerk and Master Minutes-Hardin Co. TN. Roll # 1, Vol. C: Page 86, 136, 180, 250, 273. 1. [TNHARDIN] Owens, Hill, Sloan Families

I am descended from Clara Sloan, my great grandmother.? She still has a son alive and living in CA.? She was born 20 April 1893 in Sardis, Hardin Co TN.? I have good memories of visiting her house before she passed away in 1971, I was only?7 years old & our family was unable to attend the funeral because we were out of the country.? Clara, or Grandma Teed as everyone knew her, took care of her sister Mary (Aunt Mary) her whole life.? Aunt Mary was mildly handicapped, and I don't know in what way, because she was just Aunt Mary to me when I was little.? She seemed to help Grandma Teed as much as any other woman might, but that is through the eyes of a child.? Aunt Mary never married.? They were both very stout women, I remember coming to visit, and I always knew when we visited them, because I knew the smell of their house.? Everyone's house had it's own distictive smell when I was little.? My sister says she remembers the same thing. Clara & Mary's parents were Daniel "Danny" M. I may have corresponded with some of the researchers on the Sloan/Murphy connections already, but would like to reestablish some contacts and see what else we can come up with. We also have Nanny's parents, John D. Owens, b. May 1833 TN?and Nancy/Mary Polly "Nan" Hill b. Jun 1837 TN.? These two raised Danny's and Nanny's children from 1901 on.? They were married on Aug 28, 1862 according to their headstone.? They got married during the Civil War, a hard time. 3. Beryl, It looks like your grandmother was probably born at Cerro Gordo in Hardin County. She was living there with her parents in 1900 in the 2nd Civil District.: 112 W. B. Durham 52 TN TN TN Mary 50 TN NC TN Sally 18 TN Lizzie B. 17 TN Elin 15 TN Edward 11 TN Lilly M. 7, b. August 1893 TN Two other children, James 28 and William 26 were living nearby. William and his family were living in Lawrence Co., TN 1880 along side his parents, Robert Durham 61 and Elizabeth 55. Robert lived in Maury Co., TN in 1870 and in Giles County in 1860. In 1900, Lee Shelton Carr was living with his father and Step-mother in the 4th C. D. apparently near Walker Town. William J. Carr 41 AL Louisa 22 AL wife Griffin 18 AL Andrew J. 16 AL Noah E. 14 AL Lee S. 12 AL Marrian 9 AL Ada M. 6 AL Baby 5 months, b. TN It appears that William J. Carr lived in AL until at least 1894 when Ada was born. About 1895, he married a second time (?) to Louisa. The census stated she was the mother of two children, 1 living which is the one listed as baby. Apparently they were waiting to see if this one lived before they gave it a name. This was not uncommon in those times. 3. Sorry, I didn't find anything in Hardin County, TN for Elizabeth. There were marriages recorded for a Phebe and a Polly, but the dates were in the 1870's, a trifle late for children of Ezekiel and Elizabeth Lindsey? In the 1830 census Elizabeth Lindsey - believe this to be Ezekiel's widow - is listed with the following: Males... 0-2-0-1-1. Females... 0-0-2-1-0-0-1. 1840: Males... 0-0-0-2-1. Females... 0-0-0-1-0-0-0-1. If the children were named in order of birth in the Will, both John and Elizabeth have left home by 1840 and Elizabeth might have married by 1834 if she was 15/19 in 1830. Another mystery to add to our puzzle. 3. Betty and other LINDSEY researchers, Do you know who Elizabeth LINDSEY, daughter of Ezekiel married? William West (1812 - after 1880) was the brother of my ancestor Felix WEST. I once found an online tree that gave William's wife as Elizabeth LINDSEY. I have never been able to verify that name. I have not found a marriage record for William WEST. The first child of William and Elizabeth was James WEST born about 1835. I'm guessing that William and Elizabeth were married about 1834. They were in Wayne and Hardin Counties from 1850 thru 1880.
