Hi to All on List(s), The link to USGenWeb, http://www.usgenweb.com/ (that most of you will recognize) has two very useful features on the Special Projects Page that could be very helpful to new genealogy researchers using the web. On the USGenWeb page scroll down and select Special Projects on the next page select Search Option and a page pops up where you can enter among other things, a surname and click on the state you wish to search in and the system will return all the files for the state selected that contains your surname entry, you can scroll through the list of files, open them and/or down load them. You can also enter a County name, select a state and will be returned a list of all files with that county name in them. The page has a good explanation about how to search other ways also. Again on the Special Projects page is an option for Military Records Project, that leads to a page listing all the major US Wars and clicking on one of them will give you a list of files with information on the specific war you selected and useful links to other military information sites. Under the Indian Wars are also links to information on Native American records. I apologize to those of you who are, as I am, on several mail lists for duplicates you will receive. Since I have never seen these options mentioned I would like to reach as many new researchers as possible. This is just one among many wonderful search sites on the web. emo

The history on the USS Peosta travelling the Tennessee River during the civil war refers to a John Watson who was taken prisoner. Does anyone out there know where the prisoners were taken. I seem to be at a dead end. I think this John may be my great-great uncle and he has a fairly colorful history out west after the civil war. I would love to write his story for future generations. Would appreciate any help. Jane Watson Helvering - Bald Knob, AR ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

I am searching for any information on my 3rg great-grandfather, Samuel Byrd, who was born in NC or SC in ca. 1804. He married Polly Ann Ray and had quite a few children including my 2nd great-grandmother, Josephine Byrd. Samuel eventually ends up in Hardin County, Tennessee, where he can be found in 1860 and 1870. He probably dies before 1880, but that has not been confirmed yet. I would appreciate any assistance in finding out more about Samuel. Scott Byrd Chesaeake, VA
To all: This ain't spam; it's a request for information. I'm prepaing a paper to be presented to the Wayne County Historical Society in March on the history of the old Mt. Jasper or Wayne furnace which was located four miles east of Waynesboro on the old Columbia Central Turnpike. The old furnace was originally built by a Mr. Sutton for Royal Ferguson of Maury Co., TN. After Ferguson died in 1838, James Walker, a brother-in-law of Pres. Polk? became the owner of the property and improved it by building a second furnace stack. Ferguson and later Walker, also owned the Forge on 48 Mile Creek (known as 48 Forge). Following the Civil War, Gaylord Iron and Pipe Company of Cincinnati became owners of the property and sent Col. George W. Boyd south to superintend the furnace. Under Col. Boyd's direction, a new furnace stack was built and improvements made to the whole property. Then in 1872/3 the whole thing shut down and has remained dormant since. Only the timber lands were utilized in later years with a very small amount of mining in the ore beds. I'm trying to find information on Royal Ferguson and also see if anyone has any photographs of the old furnace. The ruins were still present in the 1960's but were destroyed when US Highway 64 was rebuilt through the area. Also would like to know if anyone has any information on the activities of James Walker and his associates during the period prior to the Civil War. It would appear that Walker was very involved in the development of this area: he was president of the Columbia Central Turnpike; was involved in the extension of the telegraph lines from Columbia to Waynesboro in 1848; and also owned the Marion and Indian Furnaces near Clifton, TN. Would also like to contact anyone who had ancestors who lived in the Town of Wayne Furnace which was incorporated in 1868. And lastly, does anyone have or know of someone who does have, any of the products made at the old 48 Forge? I would like to get photographs of these products if possible. I am in search of information regarding William Byrd, who was born in about 1755 in South Carolina. He is found living with my third great grandfather, Lewis Byrd, in Hardin County, Tennessee in the 1850 census at the advanced age of 95 years. I believe this is the same William Byrd who can be found in 1840 in Roane County, Tennessee at the age of 84 years and as a Revolutionary War pensioner. I know nothing else about him, so any help at all would be great. Thanks in advance. Scott Byrd Chesapeake, VA
