    1. [TNHARDIN-L] 1860 Look-up
    2. I will post this again. Could someone with a 1860 Hardin County TN Census do a look-up. I lost Joseph Nix in Campbell County TN and am trying to find his new location. Could you please list his wife and perhaps a couple children to see if this is the Joseph Nix that I have lost. Thanks Doyle King Comp777@aol.com

I've already consulted Dr. Fullwood, no help on my family. But here is what I have and what I know: Ephraim Walker was born 1775 in SC. Married Mary Beauchamp in abt 1795. Children: Nancy 1796, infant 1798, Martha 1800, Archelaus 1801, Abel 1803, James 1805, daugher 1808, William 1810, Thomas 1812, John B 1814, daughter 1820. (one of the daughters is Mary). Ephraim and Mary in following places following years: Lexington Co SC - 1800 Jackson Co GA -1805 Knox Co TN - 1806 Livingston Co KY 1810 Clinton Co IL 1815 Washington Co IL 1818 Davidson Co TN 1820 Hardin Co TN 1830 Tishomingo Co TN 1837 - 1840 - 1845 - 1850-1860 Ephraim was an ordained a Methodist Episcopal Itinerant Minister. He was listed with the Louisville KY conference. He is listed as follows in the Methodist records: 1800 South Carolina, 1805 Georgia, 1808 West Tennessee, 1810 Kentucky, 1818 Illinois, 1820 Tennessee, 1830, Tennessee, 1840 Mississippi. He died in 1862 and is listed on the 1863 Louisville Ky Conference record. No obituary, just a notation. Family stories state the following: "John B Walker at this time (1835) was in the dairy business with his brother, Thomas, who, besides being a diaryman, was also a Methodist minister, along with another brother Archelaus. it is possible that these two preacher brothers were responsible for the construction of the historical old Methodist church known as Shiloh, around which the great battle of Shiloh was fought during the Civil War. " I do know that is was not his brother Thomas that he was in business with but with a Thomas Walker (don't know relation yet). This Thomas lived just outside of what is now Cornith MS. John Cain is a decendent of this family. Have a another family story that backs up the info that John worked for a Thomas Walker who's mother was Polly. There is a Polly Walker on the 1845 census. Archelaus was definitely a minister but only on the local level, was not listed with a Conference. Also Thomas (the brother) was a local minister. Both of these men married several different couples that I have documented. Archelaus was mostly in Hardin Co and Thomas in Tishomingo Co. Archelaus was listed on the 1860 census as clergy and Thomas was listed on the 1880 census as Minister of Gospel. As near as I can tell, most of the family is buried in the Sharp Family Cemetery in Tishomingo Co. but there are no tombstones. I figure that it is possible the Ephraim helped start the Methodist Church in Shiloh. The Western Tennessee Conference of the Methodist Church does not have information that far back, but I think the Louisville Conference records do. Since no one knew that Ephraim was a member of that conference I don't think any one has checked. I'm in touch with a person at the Methodist Church Archives and I'm having her check on this. Does any of this help?? nolin nolin@feist.com

My Dorcas (Pinson) Austin, grand-daughter of Delilah Stovall (grand-daughter of Bartholomew) settled in Hardin Co., TN at Hollands Creek. Stephen and Dorcas had a daughter Rebecca who married 1815-1817 in Lincoln Co., TN to James Gray, son of Alexander Gray and Mary Warren. 3. I've noticed that several names in Williamson Co TN are also in Hardin Co TN and Tishomingo Co MS. IE, Walkers, Browns, Martins, Piggs, Sharps, Whitakers and others. My question is, Did these people all leave Williamson Co at about the same time?? and go to Hardin Co? Then on to Tishomingo Co MS? In Tishomingo Co, a bunch of these people all live near or next to each other. Is this a coincidence they all ended up in the same place or did they all go together? My family was Methodists. Ephraim Walker was an ordained minister.Does anyone know if the others were Methodist?? Could this group of people have started the Shiloh Methodist Church in Hardin Co? (my family stories says the Walkers help found Shiloh Church). Does anyone else's family follow this same senerio?? or story?? Does anyone have proof or stories to this? I'd like to know what do you all think? nolin christensen nolin@feist.com

    3. Hello, I have just joined the list and am researching the QUALLS line in Hardin Co. I have linked into Debbie Cossey Wasserburger's line at Mary A., daughter of Archibald. The ADKINSONs are in the 1920 census living next to Mary's son Moab and married into the QUALLS line (Katherine is wife of Moab and sister to James ADKINSON). They are also related to the AUSTINs and LAMBs living nearby. So far, all I have are dates, no stories relating to the families and individuals. I welcome and appreciate all responses from the listers. It seems two of his children were born in Ala.,the other 4 were born in Hardin Cty. He md. in Lauderdale in 1877. His children were born between 1889 and 1899. Children being, Emsley b. 1886, Ala. Roxie b. 1889,Ala., Opal b.1891, Allen b. 1894, Elvin b. 1896, John b. 1899. His wife was Texana Futrell. I have a copy of a Land Purchase in 1883 by a James Hitchcock in St. Clair Cty., Ala. But have no proof that this is my James and yet in my mind I believe it could be. That being so, he must have moved to Hardin Cty. somewhere around 1890. Any help on these persons would be appreciated. Census records, etc. Thanks, Trecia (Hitchcock) Griffin

    3. BW, This is not the Washington Wells Bunch. But, we'll claim them anyway because they are from this end of the county, living in and around Cerro Gordo. This is part of the family of "Old" William Wells who was born in VA ca 1787, was living in Hardin County before 1830, and drowned in Hardins Creek. One of the children of William and _______Proctor Wells was Williamson Wells who was shown by the 1850 census of Hardin Co., TN as follows: 66-66 Williamson Wells 38 TN 13th C. D. Eleanor S. 36 NC Susan E. 17 TN James J. 15 TN d. Civil War, "E" Co., 51st Inf. CSA Margaret P. 12 TN Thomas 10 TN d. Civil War, "E" Co., 51st Inf. CSA John W. 7 TN d. Civil War, "I" Co., 41st Inf. CSA Neil B. 4 TN Martha T. 2 TN William Wells 63 VA stonemason (father of Williamson) The 1860 census lists two more children of Williamson and Eleanor: Jane, b. 1850, TN Martha, (Marsha?) b. 1857 TN Another source lists a child, Arthur David Wells who was in "F" Co., 15th Cav. CSA. The census does not support the existence of a third son old enough to fight in the Civil War, however, I have seen him listed in more that one family tree as the son of Williamson. In 1840, Williamson wells was living In the 2nd C. D. and by 1850 had moved to the west side of the Tennessee River in the 13th C. D., (this is near Swallow Bluff) and was still there in 1860. He was married to Eleanor White, b. 1814 in NC. I don't know her parents. Amanda, the sister of Williamson Wells, was married to Mealy White. In 1840 there were four White families living in the 2nd Civil District. Reddick White, age 50-60; Peter White, age 40-50; King White, age 40-50; and John White, age 30-40. If one of these is the father of Eleanor White Wells, it is most likely Peter White? He was born approx.1935-39. Was in either marines or navy----something that had to do with a ship? He was ported out of Mobile, Ala. close to a year, about 1960. When he was young he had curly, blonde hair, blue eyes & between 5' 11 to 6' tall. Very nice looking man! He is my b/dad & to my knowledge he is'nt aware that I exist. He left Mobile & my b/mother he said to return home to marry a girlfriend there & to go into the ministry like his father. Possibly Church Of God faith. My /bmom had gotten pg. about the same time he left her & Mobile. So she never got the chance to tell him her state & in fact she was'nt aware yet either. My b/mom gave me up for adoption tha day I was born 2-26-61 in Ala. I just found her 2-15-99 & have had a wonderful reunion. She is a beautiful person & has told me all she can remember of him. I also have a picture of him that he'd given moma while they dating. All I have to go on is what he had told my b/moma. I'm not sure that he is in deed from Shiloh or even Tenn. I sure want to find him in hopes that he & I can get to know each other. I am not an angry, wan'ts get even kind of person. I just want to put the puzzles to my past together.
