These are some of the main names I am researching in McNairy Co.. My grandfather was Carl Plunk son of Robert Edward "Ed" Plunk and Artelie Elizabeth "Telie" Williams. My grandmother was Mary Beatrice Jackson daughter of George Wesley "Babe" Jackson and Martha Jane Butler. I would love to share information. Have a nice day, Jan
Just posted a new nostalgic article by Tony Hays, "STEAMBOATS ON THE TENNESSEE." Hope to do a section entirely on Steamboats as they related to Hardin County, but not restricted to this. If you have ideas, pictures, articles, they are welcome and sought after. www.hardincountytn.com/history Bill

Jane, I have not been able to reach David Russell, so sent a message on Russells to the list instead. I am looking to a possible connection between the Russells and the Polks. Charles T. Polk died in Hardin Co. in 1839. His widow, Catherine, and a son, Marion A. Polk sold what remained of the family farm to James Russell in 1860. To David Russell, David, I am sending this message again and to the list this time as well. My first try bounced. Sorry I am a little slow in getting back. I am sending some Russell census information for Hardin Co., TN. You probably have it already, but it was a good exercise for me to get a little bit familiar with the Russell family. I checked the Wayne Co. census and found James R. Russell there in 1820 and 1830. Hiram Russell was there in 1830 and 1840. It appears that James joined the Russell clan in Hardin Co. in 1840. Your family appears to be those Russells in the 2nd Civil district in 1840. There were two other Russells living elsewhere in 1840. William in the 4th C. D., Savannah, and William H. in the 11th C. D., which was on the west side of the Tennessee River. I doubt these two Williams being closely related to the Russells in the 2nd C. D. You may know more about that than I? The first Russell Land owners in Hardin Co. were Robert who obtained 300 Acres in 1822, Alexander who obtained 3 tracts of 25, 8 and 2 acres, 10 April 1825, and James Russell who obtained 30 acres on 25 December 1825. Do you know how all these Russells fit together? Dear Listers - This is a subject only related to genealogy, but one that I think all searchers will sympathize with. Some time ago, my husband and I had decided we would not take up space in a cemetery (tree hugger ideals) and would be cremated. However, in the past several years, since I became a serious amateur genealogist, I have realized the value of those cemetery locations and stones to descendants. I still don't care about what happens to my remains, but I want a monument or permanent marker of some kind that documents that I lived. I would like it to be included in a cemetery list so I can be "found," but still don't want to take up a whole grave space. Has anyone else dealt with this problem? How did you solve it? As far as I know, the cemeteries in my town have no wall of markers or mausoleum for ashes. Advice, anyone? Thanks, Linda Plake Sparlin Reply privately to: lsparlin@rollanet.org Searching: PLAKE, PLEAKENSTALVER, (variations PLEAK, PLAKENSTAUFFER, PLAQUEMENNE, PLAQUE, and BLICKENSDERFER): WILCOXON, CALEB, STUCKER, GOFF, SMITH; MOORE: DAVIDSON/DAVISON, HARPER, TURPIN/TURPEN, CROCKETT, COWAN, PRICE, PERRY; FISHER: BANKS, POSEY, GRINDSTAFF, PERKINS, BLEDSOE, SMITH, CALVIN; WHITE: BOLTON/BOULTON, STANFILL/STANFIELD, THOMAS, JONES, HADLEY, KERAN, HAMMACK/HAMMOCK, PERKINS, CREEKMORE, SPERRY, BARKER; INDIVIDUALS OF THE TRIBES: MUNSEE or CHRISTIAN INDIANS, CHEROKEE, IROQUOIS/MOHAWK, CHOCTAW; and QUAKER individuals.
Ashes can also be buried and take up a lot less space. I have a friend that was cremated and buried. This was in Calif. but I'm sure there is a place in most cemeteries.

I am a descendent of Charles T. Polk, b.1780 NC, d. 1839 Hardin Co., TN. Charles T., William, John Polk, JR. and Thomas Polk apparently all arrived in Hardin Co. in the early 1820's. Charles T. and William Polk were neighbors, owning adjacent lands. There are no marriage records available in Hardin County prior to about 1859 except those that are found in family bibles or in church records. The church records in the Cerro Gordo area (Where William Polk lived) that I am aware of begin ca 1852. I will be glad to help you if I can. Please point me in some direction. I am posting this to the Hardin Co., list hoping someone else can help as well. The Hardin County history pages have changed servers, and the new one at AFO.NET is a dream to deal with. The address is the same. Although not an overall change in the pages, they have been updated, and new materiel was added. We started a new Church History page, and presently you will only find Union Valley CP and First UMC there. More will be added as people are gracious enough to submit. Only churches which have a history beyond 1900. More links were added to "War comes to Hardin County" The crew lists of the gunboats USS Tyler and USS Lexington involved at Shiloh, courtesy of Gary Matthews, and a story about civilians on the Shiloh battlefield just before the battle, by Tony Hays. Also by Tony, a story about war heroes Bolden R. Harrison, and McGarity, whom the new bridge at Savannah is named for. If you have access to Church histories in Hardin County which go back past 1900, please share with us. If you have comments, good or bad, about the website, please let me know. Go check us out -- the pages will have a new feel, and we have a new search engine that works beautifully and reports to us what is being searched for (not who searched) This will help us help you. www.hardincountytn.com/history/ Bill Darnell

Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing, as well, the genealogists trying to trace them.
