Wes, The court records in Hardin Co., TN show that Francis Coburn was in this county from 1839 to 1845. I see that your family chart does not show any of his children born in Hardin Co.? There are other Cockburns/Colburns/Coburns living in Hardin Co. Are they related to Francis? Have you seen the following: "Catherine Polk of Hardin Co., TN appoints Francis 'Cabourn' [sic -- this is Francis Cobourn] attorney to recover from Adam Clontz, Executor of Jeremiah Clontz's estate .....which have descended to me as Heir-At-Law" signed Catherine Polk, 9-2-1844." I believe this was in Union Co., NC. Catherine Clontz Polk, 1798-ca 1870, was my g/g/g/grandmother. I know, it goes back pretty far, to a Cockburn and one of the sons changed it to Coburn, That may even be wrong. Anyway, let me kno. Please fill me in on things. Wes, I would say that someone is off base with this Choctaw thing. First, Francis Coburn was from the eastern part of Mecklenburg Co., NC, that part which was settled mostly by Germans. Tommie, I have had the same problem with Archibald Long Polk. I haven't had any success yet, having basically the same information you have. However I did not know about the "Account Book for Melchior's Store." The Charles Polk listed was probably Capt. Charles T. Polk, 1732-1821. He had a son Charles Jr., usually known as Charley, but he was born in 1784 which would make him a little young. My ancestor, Charles T. Polk, born in 1780 and living in the same area would also be too young. I think Mary Long was born in 1778. One would tend to believe that Mary may have had some connection to one of Capt. Charles' sons? I have even considered that Archibald might be the son of my Charles T. Polk? Charles later married Catherine Clontz who was a niece of Mary Long. Mecklenburg County Tax Lists, etc. by Ferguson shows George W., Archibald L., Charley and William Polk on the 1823 Tax List in Capt. David Kerr's Company. They were there again in 1824. Also in this company were: Jacob, Henry, Adam and Jeremiah Clontz as well as Henry, Jacob and John Long. Most of these guys were on the 1815 Tax List also which included my ancestor Charles T. Polk. I think he moved to Hardin Co., TN ca 1823 or 24. Not much help. I've been trying to sort out a mystery. Dorothy White has been helping me with this, but we've come to a stopping place. Can anyone help? I'm looking at the children of Henry Long (b. 1740) and Anna Catherine Pence. One of these is a Mary Long who Catherine lists in her will as Mary Polk with Archibald Long Polk as a child. Who is Archibald's father? I think I've located Archibald and his family in Georgia. Future references to Mary list her name as Mary Long. Also, there is a sales ledger book that lists a Charles Polk, Sr. see: Account Book for Melchior's Store ( Oct 1792- ) John Melchior Papers Private Collection 1531, Cabarrus County NC North Carolina State Archives http://www.angelfire.com/nc/benjthomasofansonnc/meli.html Among the names listed underneath his is a Mary Long. What is the connection between Charles Polk, Sr. and Mary that she would be using Charles' account. Is Charles related to the father of Archibald? Which Charles Polk is this? I can't seem to nail him down for sure. Thanks for any insight. Tommie 1850 Census, Jasper Co., Georgia, ed 46, page 104 Polk, Archibald L. Ken, You may be corrrect about when Savannah officially became the county seat of Hardin. It appears from the Acts of the General Assembly below that it probably happened after 05 December 1827. David Chapter CCCXX An ACT, to fix, permanently, the seat of Justice in Hardin County Passed 05 december 1825 Chapter LXXV An act to amend an act entitled "An act to fix permantently the seat of justice in Hardin Co., passed 5th December 1825 December 2, 1826 Chapter CXL AN ACT change the name of the town of Hardinsville in the county of Hardin to that of the town of Savannah, and for other purposes. Vulcan Materials, at the request of several members of the Bain family, petitioned the Chancery Court of Hardin County for permission to remove the graves from the Bain Cemetery to the Mount Herman Cemetery. Vulcan bought additional land for the addition to the Mt. Herman Cemetery and paid the cost of removal. The removal was done by Shackleford Funeral Directors. I represented Vulcan in the case and have the file on it but cannot remember the exact year, probably around 1980. We hired Grace Patterson, the county historian, to research the descendants of all of the persons burried in the cemetery and ones that could be found were notified. I believe that Lee Lackey was appointed to represent unknown descendants. The Bains wanted the cemetery moved because of the proximity to the limestone quarry and difficult access. Some of the Freemans objected but did not file any contest to the petition. Let me know if you would like any other information. Donna, Saltillo Cemetery. Go about one half mile north of the main intersection on highway 69 then turn left or west about a block off of said highway. Whitelawn can be found by going about 0.7 mi west from the main intersection on highway 69, turn right or north and go 0.2 mi. Shady Grove is located by going west on highway 69 from Saltillo, turn right or north on 204 ( I believe that is the number?) go about 1 mile to Shady Grove Church. There are at least three more small cemeteries located in Saltillo. You will probably need to ask directions in Saltillo to find these cemeteries. I just learned Sunday that Bill Darnell, who was the Hardin County, Tennessee Co-County Coordinator, died in 9 January 2004. This was a shock to me as he was a cousin and a friend. The TNGenWeb Project has placed a memorial to Bill Darnell at http://www.tngenweb.org/memoriam/billdarnell.html. He will be missed. David Cagle was the Co-County Coordinator with Bill Darnell. He is now the County Coordinator of Hardin County. With the help of some other Tennessee County Coordinators (mostly David Donahue) the site back up at http://www.tngenweb.org/hardin/. According to Ronney Brewington the maintenance of the web site will be discussed at the next Hardin County Historical Society meeting this April 15, 2004. Jerry W. I'm trying to locate further information on this family. I believe Sarah A. here married Paulden Sipes of McNairy Co. a few months after this census record was made. I've seen at least three other accounts of marriages for Sarah at about this same time. Has anyone seen any court records relating to Matthew? Thanks for any help you can give.
