I just got back from a Bingham / Clayton Reunion at the Saltillo Community Center, on May 1, and part of the reunion was a visit to the Anderson and Shady Grove Cemeteries. Amanda Tate was largely responsible for getting everything together and she spearheaded clean up at the Anderson Cemetery. She had a load of gravel delivered but it didn't get spread because of wet weather. As a matter of fact, the rain Saturday afternoon caught several of us cleaning the fungus off the markers and decorating with flowers. I found several Carroll markers from the mid 1800's that was a surprise. Along with Barham's, Clayton's, Bingham's, Etheridge's, Brook's and sevarl others. If you are interested in sharing some of the labor needed to continue this project, I feel sure that Amanda could direct you in the right direction. As a passing note, I was shocked and in awe after the reunion, from all the information I gathered and cousins I met. I knew I had a lot of relatives in Hardin County. But I have more that I realized. Henry Hanson Texas
For a neat website for military burials, go to: http://www.cem.va.gov/ This is a website posted by the Dept of Veteran Affairs, National Cemetery Administration. They have placed, on-line, 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. It is supposed to include the VA's gravesite navigator, which includes names, DOB, DOD, military service dates, service branch and rank, if known, cemetery info, and grave location in the cemetery. The VA will withhold some info, such as next of kin, for privacy reasons. They will be updating the website on a continuing basis. Susan, Thanks for the information. When did Stephen Gilbert marry a Turner? Guess I need to go back and look at the chart. Which Whitlow Cemetery are you referring to? There are only two marked graves in the Milton Whitlow Cemetery, Milton and his wife, Sarah Wade Whitlow and 4, Mary I. Duckworth, M. A. Martin, Annie Patterrson and Nancy F. Turner ( wife of Jesse Turner) in the Henderson Whitlow Cemetery (Martin Cemetery in the Cemetery Census). There are three limestone lined and capped graves in the last mentioned cemetery. One is M. A. Martin, the other two are not marked with a name. I had supposed that they were the graves of Henderson Whitlow who died in 1841 and his son Granville, who died in 1849. The Cemetery is located on an original Land Grant to Henderson Whitlow. Going through the census records, I see that the Turner that Stephen Gilbert married was the widow(?) of William Turner. So if James Turner had a daughter that married a Gilbert, then it must be Milly or Molly who married Joseph Gilbert? What do you think? Stephen Gilbert was married three times. (1) Jane Smith d/o William Smith per death certificate in hand (2) Mariah Turner d/o James Turner and Serena Smith per Ada Bruce Gilbert who remembers her Grandmother's maiden name as Turner (3) Mary A. Mitchell per death certificate (of her son Joseph) and family Bible. I don't know anything about the Milly that married, the supposed brother, of Stephen. He was Joseph W. Gilbert. The daughter of Stephen Gilbert, Elander Sarah "Ellen" Gilbert ( I have her death cert) married William Merin Alexander, son of Josiah ALexander and Elizabeth Harrell. Yes, William was born June 1841 in Hardin County and died there October 27, 1924. Ellen died February 3, 1915 and is buried at Whitlow "Graveyard". They had seven children. An interesting side note: Wm and Ellen's marriage was preformed by his Uncle, D.S. Harrell, the brother of Elizabeth Harrell. Do you know the location of this cemetery? I want to walk it when we go to Hardin County in a couple of weeks. By any chance do you know of a motel in Savannah? I need to find one that will except dogs. Thanks in advance. The Gilberts and Alexanders cross again. John A Gilbert's (son of Stephen) wife, Susan Caroline Alexander is the first cousin to William Merin Alexander, above. I have information on the other Stephen Gilbert children also. Susan G ********************* On the 1850 of Stephen Gilbert, the child was Jane E not James E. They were twins. Jane died when she was under 2 years of age. Her mother died about 1852, I'm guessing there may have been some problem with the twins delivery. My line comes from her twin, John Andrew Gilbert. Susan ************************************ Thanks for the information. The Jane that Stephen Gilbert married was, Jane Smith. I have the death certificate of their daughter, Elander Sarah "Ellen" Gilbert Alexander. It states that her mother's name was Jane Smith. In the 1850 census, her father is living with the family, William. I can find no further information on him or who is wife was. Susan
Looking for anyone connected to the Ethridge family buried in Anderson Cemetery at Saltillo. Mary F. Martin Ethridge, 1808-1874 Rev. Ethan Allan Ethridge, 1807-1874 Any help would be appreciated. Wanda K. Lee
Wanda, I too found the Anderson Cemetery a few years back and one of my gg grand parents buried there, Absolum B. Joyce and Mary Jane Guthrie Joyce. About 3 years ago I went by there and found a gentleman working on the cemetery who was from Memphis and he was one of the Anderson descendants but I do not have his name. However, he stated that they were trying to get a group together to work on the cemetery. I gave him my name and informed him that if they would let me know that I would be willing to help but I have not heard any more from anyone. I did hear that a group of prisoners from the Wayne County Prison came and spent some time cleaning up but when the state discovered that it was a family cemetery they could not allow the prisoners to come back. I was back there in May of last year and unless much has been done on the cemetery it is in a sad state considering that many of the founding families of Saltillo is buried there. If you are back in Saltillo, you might stop at the first service station on the right (going east) as you go into Saltillo which is operated by David Willis who was and may still be the mayor of Saltillo. He was the one who directed me to the cemetery. He may be able to give you more information on the Anderson's. ----- Original Message ----- David as you know I have worked on this line for years, I am not directly related to this family but a neighbor of mine is. And Most everyone in this community is either related or is kin to someone else who is related. Anyawy. I have a chart for Reuben White at. http://www.couchgenweb.com/family/white.htm as you know you have at least two different white line in Hardin Co. one was from a Thomas White from Deleware that is not kin to the Bertie Co. that I can find. Anyway I never knew you was related can you give me a quick rundown on your connection to the family. And i would like to discuss Reuben ancestors with you or anyone else off line. As you probably know there is some conflict in some of the info above this, Now on Meady White . Mrs White that is my neighbor grandfather was James white and she has James bible. His bible did list all his brothers and sisters and it had Meady in it. it also had Dicey in it but did not list Reuben. It took us years and she had hired a Genealogst to find who Dicey husband and she Came up with Meady as the father to these children. and I had read her report and I was at the library when I was going through Tenessee tidbits. and came across the article in it on Reuben. Mrs White was not too happy with her genealogist after that. Anyway Reuben was the administrator for a Holt White of Bertie. Reuben must have died before he got the estate settled. any lots of people fought over this money, and John, Peter and Henry of Hardin Co. seem to be brothers of Reuben. They all had a big interest in that estate also. Now I have never found any more on this Holt White. If you have please let me know who this person was. Not proven 100%, but apparently, Meady was the son of Reuben and Ladicy (White) White. This family is described further below. By 1860, Jesse and his family moved back to Hardin County. Some say that Jane who married Stephen Gilbert was a Turner. I am not sure if Milly who married Joseph Gilbert was a Turner or not? Perhaps you can straighten me out on these Gilberts? ----- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, April 29, 2004 5:53 PM Subject: Turner/Gilbert families Dave, I'm researching the Turner and Gilbert lines that lived in Hardin County Tennessee. I'm not sure if I have emailed you in the past, I have sent out so many emails I have lost track. I'm working on James Turner/Serena Smith line. I noticed in your post on the gen forum that you mentioned that Milly ,married Joseph Gilbert. was a daughter of James and Serena. They also had another daughter, Mariah, that married Joseph's brother, Stephen Gilbert. I know very little about the Turner line, any information would be appreciated. I have alot of documented information on the Gilbert line. Do you live in Hardin County? If so, in what city. In the next few weeks my husband and I are planning a trip to Savannah to research the Gilbert family. Susan Gilbert Spfd, MO
I found the Anderson Cemetery today in Saltillo, TN and was wondering if anyone knew who is in charge of the upkeep of the cemetery? Also is there plans to put the Hardin County Cemetery listings back on the website? Thanks for any help Wanda K. Lee
James, I am familiar with the Meady White that lived at Saltillo and built a house there about 1848. He first appears in Hardin County in 1850 (see census following). This does not appear to be the Meady White you mentioned? 13th C. D. 56-56 Meady White 31 NC Amanda J. 20 TN James W. 3 TN Martha J. 1 TN William C. Frost 18 TN Hardin County was not formed until 1819, and this White family first appears here in the 1840's. probably from Bertie Co., NC. Not proven 100%, but apparently, Meady was the son of Reuben and Ladicy (White) White. This family is described further below. I am related to Thomas white, also a son of Reuben and Ladicy. I am posting this to the Hardin Co. List. Might get some comment. David WHITE, HARDIN COUNTY TENNESSEE 1790 Cen. Beryl: I have relatives from Hardin Co., TN. One was C. C. Alexander, b. 1811, Tn., who m. our Margarett Rogers, b. 1813, Martin Co., NC. They had one child, Armissa Fatame (could have been Fatima), b. 1837, Hardin Co., Tn. This family moved to Nacogdoches Co., TX and then into Smith Co., TX when it was formed. I don't know if there is any connection to your Alexanders, but I believe that C. C. was born in Wilson Co., TN. The other name I picked up on was Hannah Pickens. Our Margarett Rogers' father was Everett Rogers, b. ca 1770 NC and he moved his family into Hardin Co. very early. We think his wife died there - we can't find proof, but we do know that he m. the widow of Jonathan Pickens, Jr. She was Lydia Harrison Pickens and they reportedly had a daughter named Hannah Pickens, but born about 1797, SC. She m. a Archibald Buchanan Davis. Their son, John L. Davis, married sister of Margarett Rogers - Elizabeth Rogers. They moved to Tishomingo Co., MS; had famiy' then moved to Nacogdoches, TX. They named a daughter Hannah Davis, most likely after his mother, Hannah Pickens. Named other children common names in the Pickens line also. To further complicate matters, the eldest dau. of Everett Rogers/Unk was Armizza Rogers, b. 1800, and she married Jeremiah Harrison Pickens, b. 1801, SC, son of Jonathan Pickens, Jr./Lydia Harrison Pickens. It really gets confusing trying to figure all of the relationships out. I don't know if these families were related but had names in common. The dates I have of our families living there were ca 1820 or earlier to about 1835 or so. Everyone moved into MS and all ended up in TX.
