Lynda, You are correct. Redden Washington Reynolds married Sarah Isabella McCarn about 1856. His parents were Henry and Matilda Smith Reynolds, Henry died in 1834 and Matilda in 1837. Redden also had a brother named Henry Reynolds. Thanks, David. Now tell me that Henry Reynolds was the brother of Redden Washington Reynolds that married my other aunt, Sarah Isabella. Right? Well I will have to study the rest of this, so I can ask intelligent questions or make some connections. They all seemed to name their children the same! Thanks again. Lynda
David, Lynda, Walter....., Daniel Smith and wife Clara, per the records below, were named as heirs of Alexander Sloan, Sr. who died about 1825 in Hardin Co. It would appear that Clara Smith would be the daughter of Alexander and Ruthy Sloan. Any comments or clarification would be appreciated. Ed ------------------------------- Clerk and Master Minutes-Hardin Co. TN. Roll # 1, Vol. C, Page 86, 136, 180, 250, 273. Alex asked for Ruthy Sloan's land for keeping and support of Ruthy. Court ordered that land be sold at public action and money divided. Property (200) Acres was surveyed 8/13/1832 & granted 2/1/1850 grant # 10613 to Ruth Sloan is in Range 6 Sec. 5 on the TN. River. Plesant Smith James Adams signed a two yrs. note with him. Ruth Sloan died in Hardin Co. TN.(Page 273) $474. ($67.71) to be divided between seven (7) heirs. Page 251- Daniel Smith is dead (court date 2/23/1866) and note has not been paid.
Lynda, Pleasant A. Smith was the son of Daniel and Pleasant M. Smith was the son of Daniel's brother, James L. Smith. Matilda Smith, sister of Daniel and James L., married Henry Reynolds and they are my g/g/g/grandparents. Pleasant M. Smith is living in the household of his father in 1850. In 1860 he is shown with his first wife Nancy McCarn age 22 with no Children. Apparently she died before 1870? I don't know what happens after that? Hi David, Glad I could help. I would love someday to know if this Daniel Smith was related to our Rossell Goodman Smith said to have been born about 1817 before the formation of Hardin Co. Rossell married Sarah Margaret Berry whose father was Michael Robert Berry and mother Mary Vickers. This notation regarding Michael R. Berry and Hardin TN: Land Grant in Hardin Co. TN Nov. 1, 1813 for land along the Tennessee River. Michael Berry built a mill on his place prior to his death in 1820. Michael Berry had died by 1823 when the following road was built, "January 1823 certain people were to lay off a road from the mouth of Shorts Creek up as high as the Widow Berrye". Secondly, David, I've spent the past several months researching surnames who moved into Hardin TN and believe that atleast one group originated in Botetourt Co. VA including my Henry line, Wirt, Davy, Hawkins, Hawk, Morrow, etc. When I've finally reached the end of this research I will copy to you. There are more names that appear to be included such as Johnson, Milliken, Ross etc. It appears that several of these families moved from PA to Botetourt VA and then on to Hardin TN. Several also moved onwards from Hardin to AR. A note too in that reviewing my ancestor Wm. D. Mason's years as a Confederate Soldier with the AR Bloody 7th I read of his involvement with the Battle of Shiloh. Thought that interesting since his wife Matilda Henry was born in Hardin in 1846. Lee, Jane, Carolyn & Nolin: The Nashville Christian Advocate was indeed where the death of Jennetta Smith Russell was recorded. As a bonus, I also found the report of the death of Jaob Russell's father, Robert Russell in 1850. He also was a Methodist Minister. Rev. ROBERT RUSSELL born June 6, 1788; died May 8, 1850. Thanks Carolyn, That was exactly what I needed. I have no idea how I misplaced my file. Thanks to you and a couple others, I have recouped most of the material. I have the Civil War Widows Pension application of Mattie Merryman Russell Meadows, the second wife of Joab A. Russell. Recently, I learned that Joab A. Russell, in 1884, was the pastor of Shiloh Methodist Church that was rebuilt on the Shiloh Battlefield after the war. That information appeared in the book written by Dr. Ronnie Fullwood on the subject. My copy of that book is also missing at this moment. Joab married Mattie Merryman in 1885 in Humphreys Co., TN, and according to her, Joab A. Russell died on the 19th February 1893 in Sherman, Grayson Co., TX. Joab's first wife, Jennetta Smith Russell died in the 1870's(?) in the home of her brother, Dr. Pleasant A. Smith. They were children of Daniel Smith the first Sheriff of Hardin Co. That information was printed in a Methodist publication from the Memphis Conference I believe. You can find the Nashville Christian Advocate on the Davidson Co TN website at http://www.tngenweb.org/records/davidson/ Nolin
David, I think you are talking about The Christian Advocate, NASHVILLE TENNESSEE, by Jonathan Kennon Thompson Smith. I have looked and can't find it on the internet anywhere, but I have made several notes from the publication on my relatives sheets. Isn't it sad about David Donahue? He had done so much to help us all. If I find something on Joab, I will forward it to you. Jane A self-appointed family historian and proud of it. You can check out my family's history at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~hookersbend/
Hi David, I'm pasting a letter from you dated 4-17-2003 below. It covers the Census records you requested for Joab Russell, however, I've been unable to locate the Methodist Publication for Jeanette Smith. <<Thanks for the material on the Russell Family. I became interested in Joab A. Russell because of his Civil War Activities. He was a good soldier, having fought with Robertson's Cavalry Company (later became G Company of the First Confederate), 52nd Tennessee Infantry, 51st Consolodated Tennessee Infantry Regiment, and last, 21st "Wilson's" Cavalry regiment under Forest. As you all already knew, he moved to DeSota Co. MS soon after the war. See 1870 Census below. I have found a J. A. Russell the right age, 53, living with a Watson in Henry Co. TN in 1880. If that is him, where is his family? The census lists his occupation as a minister which is consistant with what Joab said in one of his letters. I Could not find His son Daniel Russell in and 1870 census in Texas. However, there is a Daniel living in Haywood County TN in 1880, age 28. He should have been 29 or 30. There was another Joab A. Russell, son of John R. Russell, living in Hardin County, he may have been in the Civil war, but he didn't die until 1873. I have not proof yet, but, I think Jennetta, the wife of Joab, may have been a daughter of Daniel Smith. Daniel and Pleasant were both Smith names. 1850 Census, Hardin Co., TN 61-61 Joab A. I have gotten ready to write an article on Joab A. Russell and have lost some of my material, both on the computer and hard copies that I had. I had located Joab A. Russell in the 1870 or the 1880 census of Henry County TN, living with kin folk. I can't find that information. There was a Dan Russell living in Haywood Co., TN in 1870 or 80. I have lost that. Last, the death of Joab's first wife, Jeanette Smith was reported in a Methodist publication of which I have a copy somewhere. Does anyone have any of this information? Help! David

I have not received any posts from this list for a few days. About the time I stopped receiving posts, I changed my email setup. I just want to be sure that messages to me are not bouncing back. I received the following message from a bellsouth.net address that I don't know. >I Believe You Are Related To Our Richardson's Please E-mail Me And I'll Be Glad To Help You Find Out. Does anyone know if it is okay to answer it? I would dearly love to answer it, but I think I read a warning about this type of message being some sort of scam. I get messages from the Rootsweb message boards and I always answer those. This could be a genealogist who wants to sell their services or a family book. I think it could be a scam. Does anyone have an opinion? Thanks. Star _______________________________________________________________ Save rainforest for free with a Planet-Save.com e-mail account: http://www.planet-save.com
Kathy, I don't know why Houston has so many TN records, but I do know that a lady in Dallas left many thousands of dollars to the genealogical section of the Dallas Public Library, instructing Lloyd Bockstruck to spend the money on TN records. He spent months spending all that money. There is a bank of microfilm drawers filled with records on TN counties: deed, probate, chancery court, newspapers, and many other kinds of records. Lloyd, as always, did a remarkable job on this project. Sharon, Why are there so many Tennessee county records in Texas? I know that quite a few records I have looked for are not in the county. Sometimes I was told that the records were sent to Nashville. How can I find out which Tennessee records are available in Texas? Kathy Tolliver Searching for: BOWEN, GREEN, BURDEN, ASBELL.
Can somebody direct me to the Hitchcock Cemetery in Hardin County? I'm looking for the grave of Isaac Hitchcock, b. c. 1880 NC, died Hardin County after 1860. Thank you, Pete Orlebeke [email protected]
