Star, One mistake I see--Louisa Smith Hardin was born in 1822, not 1821 as I have shown. Are you related to this Smith family? My g/g/g/grandparents were Henry and Matilda Smith Reynolds. Matilda was a sister to Daniel and James L. Smith. Some people speculate that Elisha Smith was also a brother. Any idea who their parents were? Jesse Smith was a very early settler at Cerro Gordo as well. His son George Washington Smith, 1815-1872 married Edna Debby Cagle, 1821-1872, who was a sister of my g/g/grandfather John Cagle, 1813-1879. I have not been able to trace this Smith family either. David, Thanks for the Smith/Sloan information. However, I can't comment on the Smith information since, sorry to say, I have not done any research on these folks even though it is alleged that my William Perkins, who lived on the Hardin/Henderson Co. line was married to a smith. However, I found the following information on an Alexander Sloan and Ruthy Lee. Per the below site, it is stated the following information was abstracted from Green Co., KY Marriage records as published in the Green Co. Historical Society. I have not been able to find any additional information on the Sloan/Lee connection from Green Co. KY but believe that these are the same Alexander Sloan and Ruthy that were in Hardin Co. Alexander and Ruthy Sloan had two g grand daughters with the middle name Lee. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ky/green/vitals/marr/marrbka.txt Marriages: Green Co., Ky. List, I got snowed in today. Here is some information I put together on Daniel Smith. What are your thoughts? Merry Christmas, David Daniel and Clarissa O. Smith were married before 1820 as they appear in the census of that year in Hardin County Tennessee. Their oldest child of record, Amanda Smith Duncan, was born in 1821in Tennessee. Some material that was provided to me by Ed Adams suggests that Clarissa was a Sloan before marriage. Ed Sent me this: Alexander Sloan, Sr. appeared to have settled near what is now Clifton, TN. He was married to Ruthy Unknown. Alexander Sloan died about 1825. He is found in Hardin Co. as early as the 1820 census but is not in the home on the 1830 census. Ruthy became the head of the household in 1830. Ruthy died in Hardin Co. prior to 1860 as there is a court record of the estate settlement among the heirs. The court record shows Alexander Sloan, Jr. vs. Daniel Smith and wife Clara (Clarissa); Alfred Kirby and wife Zabby; William Hill and wife Nancy; William Sloan; Simpson Sloan; Bullard Sloan and wife Dorinda; Willaim Hogan; Marian Hogan; John Hogan; Elizabeth Hogan and Alexander Hogan. (Hogan's may be grand children) Alexander II was asking for Ruthy Sloan's land for keeping and support of Ruthy; however, the court ordered that the land be sold at public action and the money divided. Property was in Range 6 Section 5 on the TN. River. Property was sold to Daniel Smith as the highest bidder on 6/4/1860 for $400. Plesant Smith and James Adams signed a two year note with him. Ruth Sloan died in Hardin Co. TN.(Page 273) $474. ($67.71) to be divided between seven (7) heirs. Clerk and Master Minutes-Hardin Co. TN. Roll # 1, Vol. C: Page 86, 136, 180, 250, 273. Page 251- Daniel Smith is dead (court date 2/23/1866) and note has not been paid. ___________ I have checked the census for as many of the above as I can find. Alfred Kirby, b. 1812 NC, was married to Debby, b. 1817 TN. William B. Hill was born in 1810 TN and his wife Nancy, b. 1820 TN. The only Hogan I could find in Hardin County was Thomas Hogan in 1840. Thomas Hogan 212001-200001 in the First C. D. The other families lived in the 12th or 13th C. D. near Saltillo. Alexander Sloan Jr., was living in the 13th C. D. in 1850. 1850 Census, Hardin Co., TN 138-138 Alex, Sloan 29 TN farmer Nancy 26 NC John 7 TN Simpson 5 TN (William in 1860, Simon in 1870 & William S. in 1880) Alexander 3 TN Clara 4/12 TN(Clarissa in other censuses) Ruth 55 SC (Age has to be 65?) If I have the age correct, which apparently I don't, Ruth Sloan is only 5 years older than Clarissa Smith, therefore couldn't be her mother. There is no mistake, it says age 55 on the 1850 census, but, the 1840 and 1830 censuses gives her probable birth date as 1785 not 1795 as shown in 1850. In 1830, Ruth has three sons and three daughters living at home. She has one son and two daughters at home in 1840. I note that Alexander Sloan named two of his children, Daniel and Clarissa. ________________ The Wills of Clarissa Smith and her Son Pleasant Alexander Smith, a surveyor and a physician, were provided to me by Pam Williams. Will of Clarissa Smith (Wife of Daniel Smith, 1797-1866) Clarissa appointed Daniel M. Smith and Samuel G. Dickey as her executors on February 8th (the year is missing). Clarissa declared that after here just debts and funeral expenses were paid that her assets should be divided as follows: To my daughter Amanda Duncan, $5, (wife of William C. Duncan). To my daughter Louisa Hardin, one bed, (wife of Benjamin Hardin). To my daughter Genetta Russell, one bed, (wife of Joab A. Russell). To the Heirs of my daughter Mary C. Smith , deceased, $5 in money,(wife of James C. Smith ?) To my son P. A. Smith, one bed. To my son Daniel M. Smith all the balance of my real and personal estate with all of my household and kitchen furniture, unless he should not live to take possession or have no heirs, then it is my will for my daughter, Louisa Hardin and her heirs to have it all, this my last will and testament signed sealed and delivered in the presents of: Test: H. W. Davis A. K. Dickey her Clarissa + Smith mark Henry W. Davis, S. J. G. Dickey and A. K. Dickey were neighbors, Davis having lived close by since before 1850 and all three men living near by in 1860. That year, Davis is age 57, Samuel Dickey is 38 and Alexander Dickey is 37. They may be kin to the Smith family, but I don't know how. Through the above Will and the census following, I have put together what I think is the Daniel Smith Family: Daniel Smith, 1797-1866 Clarissa O. Sloan Smith, 1800- before 1870 Children: 1. Amanda Smith, 1821, m. William C. Duncan 2. Louisa Smith, 1821, m. Benjamin Hardin 3. Pleasant Alexander Smith, 1824, m. Mary ? 4. Jeannette Smith, 1825, m. Rev., Capt. Joab A. Russell 5. Marcella E. David, I'm afraid I'm not much help with this Francis Henry. I've searched the NC census just in case he might have shown earlier with your Cagle direct line or cousins. The Henrys I'm researching were in VA atleast from the middle 1770's and possibly earlier. I did locate the following and wondered if you knew the maiden name of the Mary Cagle below? Could she also have come over from France? 1800 Census Cabarrus, NC Salisbury District Henry Cagle 02110-11010 Mary Cagle 10000-04001 Also these Hardin TN surnames: Douglas Winchester, John Polk, George Tucker Jr. Could the following be cousins to your direct Cagle line? 1800 Census Montgomery Co. NC George Cagle 02301-01101 David Cagle 10010-30010 James Long 00110-00301 Elijah Smith Urich Smith Drewry Smith I noticed the above Smiths and there were a considerable number in Cabarrus. Just wondered if any of these could be my Smiths of Hardin Tn. Carolyn

Carolyn, I have a document handed down in my family, dated 8th December 1835, where Henry Cagle, Jr, 1780-1857, went to court to recover a judgment against his brother George Cagle, 1780's-1840, and Francis Henry. These Cagles were related to the Long family of Cabarrus Co., NC. Probably George and Elizabeth Long and their son Ransom Long. George Long apparently died in the 1830's. Elizabeth Long was enumerated in the 1840 census of Hardin Co., TN and New Madrid Co., MO for the same year. Henry Cagle and George Cagle had previously moved there in 1838. I don't know the relationship to Francis Hnery. James, I don't know if your question has been answered about this Watson Book. It is not a history of the Watson family, but interesting tidbits about Hardin County and the various families that settled in the communities around the county. The Watsons may be mentioned but there is not a genealogy. I am looking for my half brother, Herschel Alexander Unknown. His mother's name is Ruby Unknown who lived in Savannah in the 1930s at the time of Herschel's birth. She has red hair and she had Post Office box in Savannah at the time. His father's name is Herschel Alexander White who was born in Saltillo and worked on the levy from Counce to the Savannah bridge, at the time, as a laborer or driving a dump truck. Herschel unknown grew up and died flying a crop duster somewhere between Corinth and Tunica Mississippi in the mid 1970s. I have just learned about him and would very much appreciate any information about him or the crash or anything that might lead me accordingly. Thanks in advance. Carter
I know everybody is currently thinking Christmas and Holidays and busy with the season, but I'm sending an early reminder that the Mississippi Genealogy Seminar and Mississippi Dept of Archives and History is conducting the annual genealogical seminar on Saturday, January 15, 2005, 8 am - 4 pm, at the Clarion Hotel and Convention Center near the Coliseum (400 Graymont Avenue) in Jackson, MS, just off I-55. Book and Genealogy vendors from around the South will be present with books and materials to sell all day. The speaker/lecturer for this year's seminar is ROBERT YOUNG CLAY. Mr. Clay recently retired as Senior Genealogical Reference Archivist at the Library of Virginia. He is a Fellow of the Virginia Genealogical Society, and author of numerous articles on genealogy. Clay's research areas are Virginia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Maryland, and Great Britain. His lecture topics are "Virginia City Records", "Virginia County Records", "Virginia Colonial and State Records", and "Things They Never Tell You". There will be time for questions and answers during the day. Costs: Seminar, $30.00. Optional Luncheon at the Clarion, $15.00. $2.00 discount to MGS members. No refunds after January 6, 2005. Make checks payable to MGS, and mail with name, address, phone, and e-mail address to MGS, P. O. Box 5301, Jackson MS 39296-5301. Please pass this message on to your friends and colleagues and to other genealogical organizations and groups of which you are a member or subscriber. The Mississippi Genealogical Society over the past 60 years has compiled 24 bound volumes of previously unpublished mostly-private Bible, cemetery, will, and other family records, as well as an index of all 24 volumes. These are NOT on-line nor in electronic form, and the MGS has not made a decision to put these on a CD-ROM due to the large numbers of hard-copy books it has on hand. All of these volumes sell for $25 each, and the index is $35. The entire set is $635, but we are offering a special set price of $495.00 (a savings of $140). In addition to the above, the 1st edition of the lineage charts of MGS members was published in 1991, and is available for $40. Also, Newspaper Notices of Mississippians, 1820-1860, is also available for $20. MGS first published it in 1960, and reprinted it in 1996 due to demand. MGS also has a few books left from the May Scots-Irish Seminar from Ulster, most of which are $25 (ask for titles). All of these books can be ordered from the above address, and they will be available for sale at the January Seminar. If ordered by mail, include $2.50 for the first book, and $1.00 for each additional book for shipping and handling. As best I can due to time limitations, if anybody wants to know if they have surnames in these volumes, please send me the names and I will check and let you know. The Mississippi Archives and a number of libraries in the South have these sets, and if not, you might want to encourage your local library to purchase them while they are still available, or if you are feeling generous and looking for an end of the year charitable donation, you can purchase them for your local library and donate them! Caroline, William T. Alexander married Ruth Lacefield and had several daughters and a son Robert. Daughter Evaline first married William M. Bishop and they had two children, John and Tennessee. William was in Wilson's 21st Cavalry CSA and was killed during the war. Evaline married a second Civil War Soldier, Jacob Vanbibber, who was from AR, but joined a TX outfit before he came to TN. He was wounded at the battle of Iuka MS. In 1870 John and Tennessee Bishop are shown in the household of Jacob Vanbibber, but listed as Vanbibbers. I am looking for information on the Richard Robertson Family. Richard was born in 1807 in VI and married Louiz Ann born in 1806 in NC. They had 10 kids. According to the 1850 census they all lived in District 9 but I can not find them in any other records before or after 1850. I know they had one child, Thomas, who moved to MO and then to AR. Another child, Nelson, moved to AR. I believe that two other children, Calvin and Samuel, may have been in Company F of the 18th TN CAV. I would appreciate any information anyone may have. Thank you, Scott Robertson Texarkana, TX
