I am researching the following families from Hardin and other Tennessee counties: Gilmore, Gant, Martin, Ratliff, Kiser, Rose, Gray, Beckham, Wingate, Harber, White--these last two are the ones I need more information on.
My main Hardin County lines are White, Covey, Presley... but I also have Graham and Brown. The White family moved from Alabama to Hardin County in the mid-1860's. My grandfather, Herman Samuel White, has Pittsburgh Landing listed on his birth certificate. I understand the family consisted of Methodist preachers and teachers. Anyone out there who has heard these stories? Sue Robison
SHIPMAN, FISHER, AUSTIN, BARNET, ROSS Joe Newcomb
A few of the Hardin county connections I am researching are: Cooper Irvin Jerrolds Smith Covey Harbor Gant Benny Cooper [email protected]
My Hardin County research consist of the following surnames directly related: Clayton, Reddin, Hanna, Carroll Indirectly : Adams,Bingham, Shepard, Mackey, Roy, Plunk, Morris, Kennedy, Carter, Creasy. Henry Hanson College Station, Tx.
From the 1850 Census I have great-great grandparents, John and Lucretia (Tankersley) Price and my 3-g grandparents John and Elizabeth (Moore) Tankersley living side by side in Civil District 6. They left together for Illinois in 1862 after Shiloh. I can't get any trace back (earlier than 1840) on either family. Any help appreciated. Jeanetta, Following I am posting some information on the Freeman family that I posted to the list a few days ago. Your Benjamin Rush Freeman is of this family. His father appears to be William P. Freeman. Who was his mother? Grandparents? etc. Perhaps others can help? --------------------- I am not directly related to the Freeman family, but do have some ties. Most all the families I am discussing lived in the Mecklenburg Co., NC area before coming to Hardin County. My ancestor Henry Cagle, Jr., 1780-1857, and his brother George Cagle, 1780's-1840, arrived in Hardin County ca 1825. Both were enumerated in the 1830 census of Hardin. George Cagle married Elizabeth Freeman, 1806-1870's. She was the daughter of Gideon and Deborah Polk Freeman. Gideon was the son of Allan Freeman who's will follows: Mecklenburg Co., NC. Will Book C, Will of Allen Freeman ALLEN FREEMAN. 24 Jan 1807, prb in Apr 1807 Ct. I will to my wife Barbara Freeman, during her life, the negro Grace, a third of the land that I now live on, together with the mansion house, and a bed and furniture and bedstead. I will 40 shillings to each of my following children: son Gideon Freeman, daughter Nancy Wagstaff, son William Freeman, son Allen Freeman, daughter Sarah Freeman, son Charles Freeman, to whom I also give the negro Wood, and daughter Susannah Garmon. I will to my daughter Jemima Freeman, daughter of my present wife, the negro girl Matt and a bed and furniture. I will to my son Isham the negro Joe, a bed and furniture, and all the land that I am now possessed of shall descend to said Isham including the third reserved to my wife during her life. I will to my daughter Peggy the negro Charlotte and a bed and furniture. The remainder of my property is to be sold, and, after all legal expenses are paid, the residue is to be divided among my 12 legatees Exrs: Worthy friends Charles T. Alexander and Jeremiah Clontz. Wit: John Long, Jurat, and Jacob Long. Isaac Alexander, CMC. ___________________ Three of the children are Gideon and William who married the Polk sisters, Deborah and Peggy, and Jemima who married William H. Polk. Charles T. Polk, 1780-1839, married Catherine Clontz, 1798-1870, who was the daughter of Jeremiah Clontz, one of the executors of Allan Freeman's Will above, These and perhaps some of the others came to Hardin Co. Following is something I put together on the Freemans a couple of years ago. I am anxious to see where you fit into this. Any comment or assistance is welcome. David --------------------------------- FREEMAN The Freemans described in this article appear to have originated in North Carolina as did most of their relatives and neighbors who lived in the 2nd and 3rd Civil Districts of Hardin County soon after the county was formed. These Freemans appear to be descendants of Gideon Freeman, b. 07/12/1769, some sources say, in Guilford County North Carolina. However, no Freemans were shown living there by the 1790 census for that county. A Gideon Freeman was enumerated in the 1790 Census for Granville, County, however, Gideon Freeman shown in the 1790 census for Mecklenburg County North Carolina is most probably the ancestor of the Hardin County Tennessee Freemans. That census shows: Michael Freemon 1-0-4-0-1 David Freemon 3-2-5-0-0 Reuben Freemon 1-0-1-0-0 Apparently this was one family group and the other was as follows: Widow Freemon 0-3-4-0-0 Allen Freemon, Sr. 1-3-3-0-12 Allen Freeman, Jr. 1-0-2-0-0 Gidion Freemon 1-1-4-0-1 William Freemon 1-1-4-0-0 Elyburn Freemon 1-0-2-0-0 Gideon was living in Cabarrus County before 1800 as shown by a deed dated July 31, 1795 conveying from Gideon Freeman to Michael Garman fifty acres of land, the deed being recorded Monday, January 16, 1797. At that time, Gideon may have moved to near Anson County where he was enumerated in the 1800 census for that county. Edward Freeman also lived in the Anson County at that time while, Andrew and Charles Freeman remained in Cabarrus County which was formed from Mecklenburg in 1793. Those enumerated in Mecklenburg in 1800 were: Allen, James, Michael, and Rubin Freeman. Gideon's whereabout in 1810 is not known. There were no Freemans enumerated in Anson or Cabarrus Counties for that year. However, 1810 Mecklenburg shows: Widow Freeman, Allen, Cleben, David, And Rueben Freeman. Gideon Freeman is enumerated in the 1820 census for Cabarrus County along with Anderson and Isom Freeman. Anson County shows John and York Freeman, while those enumerated in Mecklenburg County are: A. A. Freeman, Allen, Barbarry J., Charles A., Guidion, James, Mary A., and Rueben Freeman. As shown above, there were two Gideon Freemans living in Mecklenburg and adjacent Cabarrus Counties. The Gideon Freeman living in Cabarrus County is more likely to be the ancestor of the Hardin County Tennessee Freemans as his daughter, Elizabeth, married George Cagle who was a resident of Cabarrus County. Gideon married Deborah Polk, b. 12/10/1768, the daughter of Captain Charles and Mary Clark Polk of Mecklenburg County North Carolina. Deborah's sister, Peggy Polk, married William Freeman. Gideon and Deborah along with Deborah's siblings, , William Polk, and Martha Washington Polk Shelby migrated to Hardin County Tennessee between 1820 and 1830.. Gideon Freeman may have died ca 1825, and perhaps never made the trip to Tennessee. The 1830 census for Hardin County Tennessee shows: Dor. Freeman 00002-10011001 Widow of Gideon Sarah Freeman 0012-0010001 ? William Freeman 220001-000001 Son of Gideon Henry Cagle 1001001-0022001 Bro. of George George Cagle 2000001-000001 m. Elizabeth Freeman Thomas Polk 0000001-10001 Cou. of Deborah John Polk 012001-20001 Cou. of Deborah William Polk 0120101-210001 Bro. of Deborah Charles T. Polk 0001001-01101 1st Cou. of Deborah? Moses A. Shelby 2012001-220001 Bro.-in-law of Deborah There were only two Freemans enumerated in the 1840 Census for Hardin County, Tennessee: Deborah Freeman 0-0100100001 Charles Freeman 00001-0001 William P. Freeman died about the 11th of June in 1837. His children were bound out to guardians, however, no mention is made of his wife. Usually the Administrators of the estate are appointed to lay off support for the widow. There are at least 21 items in the court records relating to the heirs of William P. Freeman, yet none mention his wife which indicates that she may have preceded him in death. All seven of the William P. Freeman children can be found in the 1850 Census for Hardin County, Tennessee: 49-49 James J. Booth 25 TN 2nd C. D. Elizabeth 19 TN John W. 6m TN Elizabeth Freeman 15 TN 46-46 Benj. R.
