This has to be one of the best rootsweb lists in the country! All - or nearly so - of its members are very active - and generous in sharing - and the hosts are the most cooperative I deal with on lists. Thanks for bringing up the question of the members, Kathy. Now, we know why the site is so great...it's members and hosts! Sharon Cunningham From: "Jerry W. I would appreciate any information on the Whitaker family around Hamburg. Thanks. Frank Brown Kansas City
My Hardin County area names: Basye, Blackwood, Brasfield, Cody, Davis, Durham, English, Gray, Kemp, Marshall, Phillips, Plunk, Shelby, Shepherd, Sipes, Todd, Turner Tommie
My Hardin Co. surnames are: Simmons Lynda Gonzales [email protected]
Lamar, Cheryl, & C. White: My earliet known ancestor was Eligah White, b. abt. 1821. Came to Hardin Co. from NC - year unknown. Was on 1850 census in Hardin Co., 2nd District. Wife is listed as Sarepta (various spellings), and son Wilie W. who is one year old. (Sistler lists as Wilie, but name is actually Wilce. There was also a daughter, Eliza Caroline who m. James Gooch from McNairy Co. and moved to Arkansas. I believe Eligah's family was in Decatur Co.12th Dist. in 1860. Census reads E. - 40; S.G. -30, W.W. - 12, W. G. - 4; J. S. - 2. The ages are correct. The W. G. would be my great grandfather, William Gus White who was b. in 1857. J. S. would be younger brother. We have evidence that Eligah (Liege) was hauled off to prison by some "good" Hardin Co. folks, where he died in 1865. They tried to steal his last horse, so he shot one of them. (The raiders had already taken some horses earlier, so he was about fed up with it.) After Eligah was killed, William Augustus "Gus" and his brother went to Texas and then to Kansas City, according to family story. Gus was back in Hardin Co. by 1880 when he married Jane Ann Pine Dexter Love, daughter of William Love and Louise Crowder Love. They had six sons. Sylvester, b. 1882, Thomas Clayton, b. 1884; John Simpson, b. 1887; Jessie Lee, b. 1889;( my grandfather); Leige Gus, b. 1892; and William J. "Briant" b. 1897. My father told me that his father "Gus" talked about Uncle John White. He is supposed to be buried at Cerro Gordo. Also talked about Uncle Meady. Eligah may have been part of the Ledicy White family, but cannot prove or disprove it. p.s. There is a Family Group Sheet on the web that shows William Augustus White as the son of William Jackson White (I believe of Olive Hill area.) This is not correct. Although William Jackson White had a son b. in 1857, he is William Andrew White. David Cagle, please correct if I'm wrong.
Please contact me if you are researching any of the following Hardin County, TN families: Barnhill, Paulk, Hitchcock, McGee, Bryant, Simmons, Arnold, Sizemore, Dearen, Covey, Cooper, Hulin/Hulen I would love to compare information with you. Kathy, My Turner family apparently came to Hardin Co., TN from Orange Co., NC? James Turner, 1793-?, married Serena Smith. They were in Hardin County before 1830. They lived at Cerro Gordo. Below is some census information on the Copeland family. My g/g/grandmother was Elizabeth Jane Copeland from Bear Creek in Wayne County who married John A. Stanfield of the same location. They moved to Cerro Gordo and setteled near Harmony Church about 1883. About 1890 John A. Stanfield gave about a half acre for a Baptist church to be built at the north end of the Harmony Cemetery Tract. The Presbyterian Church was located at the south end of the cemetery. I am not sure just exactly how or if my g/g/grandmother was kin to those listed below.
